The OTW, the non-profit that runs the Archive of Our Own, has a murky future

Following a controversy around its most recent board election, the non-profit group that runs the fanfiction hub Archive Of Our Own (AO3) announced on Sunday its entire board had resigned.

Now the leadership of the Organization for Transformative Works is up in the air.

Andrea Horbinski, a current member of the seven-member board, was up for re-election to two open board seats, but she came in last in the members election. The membership, made up of roughly 8,000 fans who paid a $10 membership fee, voted for Matty Bowers, Atiya Hakeem, Alex Tischer, Katarina Harju, Aline Carrão, and Horbinski in that order.

During a public board meeting on Sunday, the OTW board appointed Horbinski back onto the board to fill an unfinished term on a third open seat not included in the election. Horbinski voted in favor of the motion to re-appoint herself to the open seat, rather than abstaining from the vote. The board meeting came to an abrupt halt after several OTW members voiced their opposition to the decision, pointing out that other candidates got more votes than Horbinski in the election.

This is kinda a mess, but considering a lot of people regularly give over 500K twice a year to the organization, I think it’s important to pay attention. OTW effects not just people with an AO3 account.

Sorry this is so Totally late but the fact of the matter comes down too; Bianca’s race is not canon. I love the fight people give for more poc characters but wasn’t it said that she had a spray tan? If she was poc why would she need one. It isn’t necessary. Fight the battles of white washing ACTUAL poc characters that are canon. That’s where the real problem is.

There are actually many characters of color/irl people that get spray tans for any variety of reasons (I don’t agree w/ it but it happens) so that’s not proof of any kind, but yeah Bianca’s canon race is somewhat ambiguous. Here I’m just asking white people to examine why they may be so adamant on having a white character where a character of color could exist

Also I agree the whitewashing of canon characters of color is a more important/serious issue in the fandom, but just because I fight one battle doesn’t mean I abandon/ignore another. I can address my personal thoughts on Bianca, & I don’t force anyone else to follow me in that line of thought. I don’t think everything in the fandom falls into categories as simple as not a worry/a ‘real’ problem.

I think there’s a variety of stuff that can be tackled/discussed in fandom :0 and not everyone has to agree on a set issue, such as something as arguably ambiguous as Bianca’s race. I just hope people will listen to where I’m coming from and I won’t be told to stand down, even if what I’m saying isn’t popular

I’m sorry this got lengthy but tl;dr I hope you see I’m not trying to say this is the fandom’s biggest issue or that my word is final, I just want to be able to express my concerns w/ something in fandom w/out being accused I’m doing it at the cost of other important fandom issues. & I know w/ Bianca not every POC in the fandom will agree on one conclusion/opinion!! We’re individuals, after all; I just want to be able to say my piece

I also never said you took away from other movements I feel however that fighting over whether Bianca is a poc or not. (Which should be up to headcannons at this point) is not necessary is all. Dreadlocks as well as most braiding types is seen as an overall poc concept of managing hair, it's come up one before that I spoke on and I mentioning it again. When fighting for poc fight for canon ones and for getting away from appropriating their culture. Don't waste time on non canons until they become canon.

So I asked my roommate if I overstep my bounds wrt race issues and they said they don’t spend enough time on tumblr anymore to know for sure and tumblr politics are super weird anyway.

And then in talking we agreed that it’s confusing? Because the issues that I bring up, I do see POC talking about it and saying yeah this is an issue, this is a problem. But then I see other POC saying no guys this isn’t a problem, chill.

Whose voice do I listen to? Whose voice do I boost? If I agree with the person who says it is an issue, aren’t I using my racially privileged voice to talk over another POC? “This isn’t an issue.” “No I, the white person, say it is.”

??? That doesn’t fly. I know it doesn’t.

But if I say it’s not an issue, then I’m not listening to the POC who say it is an issue. And when a POC says something is a race issue, I know to listen to them because they have experience while I do not.

So what am I supposed to do? I can’t NOT talk about racial issues at all. POC have said that they want white people to help boost their voices so the issues will be more well known.

yeah that’s because you’re ( archie-holywoodu-art-blog ) putting me in between a rock and a hard place I can’t agree with what all of you are saying if you’re not in agreement. I’m going to end up speaking over someone no matter what. And I know it’s unreasonable to expect you to be in agreement because POC are not a singular being.

But just. I don’t know what to do here. You hate me for doing something wrong and YOU ARE NOT TELLING ME WHAT I AM DOING WRONG. And how am I supposed to know what’s right and what’s wrong when I’m getting a bunch of contradictory messages?

The thing you got wrong Hermie. We don't want you to boost our issues. Our issues are getting heard without you. We want you to check the people and understand the privilege you have. This this whole thing is so upsetting because you're literally crying wolf because someone called you out on something they thought was upsetting and you need to understand that while you stand up for poc you overshadow them and take away from their points for the mere fact you're white. I’m so incredibly sick of the fighting between headcannons. Specifically ones of color because of the fact it raises ally’s heads and stirs unneeded drama. If the character is CANON as poc it is an issue and you shouldn’t take away the representation that barely get. However if it is not canon (the stones) don’t fight a battle that could go either way. It’s not worth it. Feel free to @ me. I don’t care. I headcannon Bianca as white. It’s the same with dreads and such. It’s disrespectful if it’s an actual poc thing or character. If you’re an Ally and wanna know what’s wrong please do say something to me.

I really like the updates to be honest. I think it’s really cool we get an actual celebrity who is available in the games and plus a glee character why not? I don’t understand why this is getting so much hate. I love it. I think it’s neat.

Above is the “Know Anon” code that allows you to expose any hateful anons you wish at your own whim. If you know anyone who’s struggling with anonymous hate, reblog this for them.

How to install

Simply copy the above code and paste it right after the <head> portion of the HTML coding on your blog. This is with the jQuery script included, so everything should be covered. Once you’ve done this, update and save, then exit your customize page.

Re-enter your customize page, and under “appearance” should be a button called “Enable Know Anon”, which may be on or off automatically, depending. Flip the switch to enable or disable it, then save.

How to use

When you get anonymous hate or anon messages you find offensive, simply exit your Inbox, enter your Customize page, flip the switch to “on”, then save and exist. Re-enter your inbox, and any and all anonymous messages will be exposed with a URL, if they have one. Note that this includes everything, not just the hate. Another thing to note is that, once you expose anons in the inbox, you can’t un-expose them. Flipping the switch back to “off” does nothing.

Answer a message people thought was on anon, and gee, they’ll get a nasty little surprise, hmm? It’s better than a fake anonymous button because while you still can’t control who it exposes, you can control when to do so.

Remember though, that this isn’t the only way to stop anonymous hate. As always, there’s simply the “turn anonymous asks off” button. And thanks to the update from a few months ago, anons CAN be blocked.

That little hand right there? That’s the ignore button. It’s present on all asks sent, whether anon or otherwise. When you block an anon, you have the option to report them for spam or harassment, and it will permanently block them. It also blocks the IP address and computer, so that person can’t take advantage of extra accounts to continue sending you hate. It effectively wipes that person right out of your Tumblr life. They cannot contact your blog again, ever.
