The commonality between all characters who are gruesomely killed is that they all used the unicorns body. The Leopolds used it for power and personal improvement, while those they employed used it for recognition and wealth.

It had bothered me that Elliot was sparred and then saved by the parents despite causing two instances of direct harm to the baby. But the distinction between him and the Leopolds and scientists is that, like Ridley, Elliot never used the unicorns body for self gain.

His approach to the creatures was always one of respect and fear. Even when he steals the horn- this isnt with the intention to sell it (like Dr. Bhatia). I think the fact that he nicked it with no concrete ideas is the reason the unicorn followed him instead of stomping his brains out.
