I've noticed something about Snapeâone of his biggest red lines, the thing that truly pushes him to his limit, is when someone's life is in danger.
In those moments, he becomes the most vulnerable version of himself. He forgets everythingâevery grudge, every precaution, every defense mechanismâand his only focus is getting people out of harm's way, no matter the cost.
So vulnerable that hearing about Ginny Weasley's kidnapping forces him to lean on the back of a chair. So vulnerable and unguarded that while saving Harry from Quirrellâs curse, an eleven-year-old sets him on fire. So vulnerable that, in his attempt to manage the chaos of the Shrieking Shackâwith children, a werewolf, and a supposed murdererâheâs disarmed by 13-year-olds. He's so reckless that he makes an Unbreakable Vow for Draco. So reckless that he chases a werewolf, without Wolfsbane, under the full moon near sunset. So reckless that he ventures into the Forbidden Forest to find lost children. So reckless that he roams the hallways in the middle of the night, in his nightgown, chasing the sound of a scream. So reckless that, as a Death Eater, he risks everything to warn the leader of the opposite side about Voldemort's plans to kill the Pottersâand is willing to give anything to save them. He's so ungrudging that he carefully carries an unconscious Sirius Black. So ungrudging that when Black is captured, he checks on him immediately and alerts the Order of the Phoenix. So ungrudging that he risks his cover to save Lupin.
And I think these moments say so much about his humanityâthings the books never fully explain.

After hours and hours of work I have finished my first digital painting! Iâve learned quite a lot about Procreate and thereâs several things I can carry over to my composite rendering skills. This is a labor of love. I really wanted to depict Severus as he was prior to turning to the light and the Order. This is Sev around the age of 20, prior to his âBig Mistakeâ. Now I share it with all of you! đ

Snapeâs Weekly Self-Care Plan
(Because rest is for the weak and joy is optional.)
Monday â Glare at Gryffindors with renewed spite.
Tuesday â Brew something volatile. Watch it simmer. Relate.
Wednesday â Annotate student essays with cruelty disguised as critique.
Thursday â Avoid Slughorn. Succeed. Avoid feelings. Succeed harder.
Friday â Sip tea darker than your future.
Saturday â Pace the dungeons in full robes for no reason.
Sunday â Meditate. By which I mean: judge people internally for hours.
Severus Snape, who spent half of his life trying to appear posh and respectable.
But who cannot help the Midlands grit from his youth clawing up in his throat during sex. Something vulgar that would bleed despite his best efforts and cling to his tongue.
And he'd be ashamed of it until his partner tell him they love it.
"Y'want me raw like this? Bit o' gutter filth in yer bed?"
Raw.
The real him.
It would do something to him, to be accepted for who he was to his core. This rotten core he despised but could never ever get rid of. And it'd unleash/heal something in him because not having to pretend would feel so fookin' good.
that's a cool concept, but honestly, I've never thought Severus had a strong accent. Eileen most likely spoke high-class English, and I'd imagine she was the person Severus primarily socialised with. The extent of him acquiring a working class accent depends on how socially active he was as a kid â like did he visit muggle school? Did he hang out at least occasionally with other children besides Lily? We don't know that. But I think that hearing mostly his mother during his childhood, and then going to Hogwarts at the still rather supple age of 11, he wouldn't have it going very strong. not least because Harry, while watching the memories, doesn't comment on it in any way (while Hagrid's accent is empathised, for example).
I gave a bit of thought to your answer and I may have some counterpoints.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think Severus talked like a Spinner's End alleycat in school. He may have been rough around the edges at 11 but very quickly adapted - whilst not entirely I think, not until the later years when he really tried to fit in more within the slytherin crew.
As for his childhood, like you said, if he went to public muggle school he would have been exposed heavily to the kid's language for sure. But even if he didn't and spent most of his time with his mother, I can't believe Eileen high-class English didn't evolve as she lived in the slums. First we don't know how much time she spent there before having Severus ; but even if we assume they started living there when he was born, that's still 11 years where she needed to fit in this ecosystem.
Now Eileen may have been a victim of Tobias's abuse but it doesn't mean that she wasn't talking to anyone else. When one research about life in the slums, those were very tight communities. People helped each other out. I believe (hope!) she socialized with the wives of other workers, neighbors, maybe had a few friends amongst them!
Now it's very human to adapt to your surroundings. As Severus might have adapted at Hogwarts, Eileen would have adapted to the slums. It doesn't mean that she may have lost all of her good manners, but it wouldn't be surprising if she tried to fit in by not sounding too posh. Then let time do the rest, picking up some of the slang, the swearing, the expressions, and Severus - hanging around with her and around the same people - learned the same things.
And I personally like the idea that it stuck. He was raised rough and even if his time during summer wasn't pleasant at home (but well, school was rough as well, can't have a break can he?), it was still home. And as he grew older he maybe understood a bit more of what the slang meant and while arguing with his father, sounding posh wasn't exactly efficient. So he yelled back using the same language as him (and he might still thinks to this day that Midlands insults are way more honest and satisfying to throw even though he's brilliant at cutting politeness).
Does this count as a thirst trap?

The nerve of JK Rowling to describe Snape as ugly then describe him like a muggle rockstar. Black hair/the sickly pale skin combo. The all black robes, the inevitable eye circles, the tragic stares from the dark penetrating eyes. Turns out to actually have tattoos. Then she supported Alan Rickman of all people being cast. Did she ever expect us to actually dislike him? Because I liked him from the first book. Legit thought he was the coolest teacher there.
She largely based Snape (especially his appearance) on her chemistry teacher John Nettleship. For some reason she just hated him. He was autistic, very nice man. He helped out her mother (hiring her as an assistant in his class, getting a disabled bathroom installed in the science department specifically for her so she wouldnât have to go across campus and back). He would do wellness checks on those who had toxic or even violent exes and more. It may have been JKR taking his autistic traits personally- at the time he was teaching her, he was going through a messy breakup/divorce. His health was declined, he was sleep deprived, sick. But generally he was a nice kindhearted man. JKR also liked a man that had similar autistic traits/tendencies as John. She admitted to making Snape as a way to get ârevengeâ on John. John wasnât even ugly either. You can look at his photos and see he was rather attractive. JKR really just didnât like him, and made a character based off of him to use as ârevengeâ. John and his family ended up embracing it though, John at first didnât like being Snape- he was scared he wouldnât be liked because of it, but a lot of fans did enjoy Snape and he was able to see why afterwards. He did tours dressed up/cosplaying as Snape for an American tour company but JKR being a hater like usual gave him a cease and desist in 2007 (I believe) and he had to stop. But yeah, the reason why Snape is really autistic coded is because he was based off an autistic man. The reason why he is labeled âuglyâ is because the man he was based off of was someone JKR didnât like for whatever reason.
^^^^
THIS. This is the perfect addition to my post. Why she hated so much a man who was just strict as a teacher yet sacrificed for her and her mother idk. Itâs kind of sweet that he embraced the role she cast him in with love rather than having it destroy him. I mean Severus is such an amazing character and his role in the story is noble and complex. He is the most intersting character in the narrative and itâs amazing that he could see that and enjoy it. Why she needed to put him down even more is upsetting. Itâs just yet another reason why Iâve become disillusioned with JKR as a person. Itâs really sad honestly.
Also on a side note I myself am Autistic and now my heart is warmed 1000% because Severus being autistic is just cannon to me now. Idc what JKR thinks of Snape honestly sometimes I wonder if she realizes the masterpiece she created in him and what it means to those of us who are âuglyâ and âevilâ to have a character like us who comes out to be one of the most noble and good natured of the series.
somethingâs pissing him off

do you ever get reminded that severus has family history of substance abuse and just kinda wonder how he didnt fall down the rabbit hole of addiction especially since hes a POTIONS MASTER??? and with the life he had too???
Well he is a grandmaster of self-denial and was probably highly motivated to avoid being like his father before he got there.
Is it canon? It makes a lot of sense, but is it canon?
But yeah.
Another quality of his that I could never hope to emulate is his asceticism.

Does Severus have daddy issues or mommy issues?
Can it be both?
Severus comes from a dysfunctional home, and trauma in such environments often has one main figure but several peripheral ones. Clearly, the focus of his issues is Tobias, who is a violent figure. We can also assume that his father is one of the main reasons he developed a disdain and dislike for Muggles and the Muggle world in general, as he associated everything related to it with something negative. This could explain why he had such anxiety not only about fitting into the magical world but also about being sorted into a house that was considered opposed to the acceptance of Muggle culture.
I also always say that his upbringing context must be taken into accountâhe didnât come from a good neighborhood, or a comfortable area with resources and social welfare. He was raised in a very poor and vulnerable social context, so itâs logical that for him, the Muggle world represented being at the very bottom of the social ladder and, at the same time, symbolized violence and a lack of basic necessities.
The fact that we know his father was a violent man, and yet Severus does not express physical violence himself but is rather sly when he wants to hurt someoneâthat he acts from the shadows and always tries to contain himselfâsays a lot about how trauma shaped his personal expression in relation to others. Also, the fact that he clearly has more conflicts with men than with womenâespecially with men who have a very heteronormative behavior, who exhibit a hegemonic, dominant, and aggressive masculinityâcould be interpreted as a reflection of his rejection of everything that reminds him of that abusive paternal figure, identifying that type of masculinity as something negative, while also seeing it as a threat.
But the father is not the only negligent one, and we know that victims can also be abusive without ceasing to be victims, or they can be imperfect victims. I believe Eileen also played a role in his personal issues. There are many versions of Eileen, but the most widespread is that of the abused woman who adored her son and who was his only emotional support. However, one thing that is rarely talked aboutâsince itâs a taboo because itâs often interpreted as questioning victims of gender violence, even though it isnât, because weâre not delegitimizing what they went throughâis that violence within a couple, when there are children involved, doesnât only affect the womanâit affects the children, too.
And women donât have to put on a brave face or try to pretend nothing is happening. Many try, to protect their children, but even so, it doesnât work, because children are not blind. I donât rule out the possibility that Eileen had her moments of maternal affection, but she probably also had her moments as a traumatized and abused woman who couldnât get out of bed or manage her own trauma properly and wasnât capableâor didnât have the strengthâto be a support system for her son.
That, of course, adds to the fact that the abuse came from someone supposedly âinferiorâ to her. That she could have easily knocked him out, that she had tools to defend herself but had fallen into learned helplessness and the cycle of violence that often affects these types of victims, and simply didnât see herself as capable. And that also breeds a lot of anger and resentment and long-term consequences.
I bring this up because itâs very common that, even though the main hatred or trauma children feel in these households is directed toward the abuser, the violent figure, over time they also develop internalized resentment toward the other adult who was supposed to take care of them. Because even if you know your mother was a victim, she was also an adult, and she was supposed to protect you, she was supposed to get you out of thereâand she didnât. And even if you understand why she didnât, even if you know she couldnât, that doesnât mean you stop resenting her actions.
So to me, Severus not only has daddy issues, but could very well have mommy issues as well, from this angle. Itâs not far-fetched. In fact, itâs completely logical and realistic, especially if we assume that Eileen never left Tobiasânot even when Severus went to Hogwarts and she knew her son would be in a place where heâd be fed and sheltered and she could have run away. She stayed, as many victims do, and it wouldnât be far-fetched to think that Severus, as he grew upâand especially as he fell deeper and deeper into that Slytherin purist sphereâbegan to resent his mother more and more. Or even blamed her for the fact that they could have had a better life, but she chose to live in misery.
So Iâd say both, but clearly, the main and foundational source of his trauma and anger issues is his father.
I feel like people forget Severus was in his early 30s for majority of the books. That was not a man who had experienced many years of growing and thinking, now just content to reminisce on the past every so often. His wound was fresh when we saw him, especially with how wizards age. He was still deep in the festering stages of experiencing trauma. So yes, by god was that man full of pure unbridled rage and aggression for the people who had wronged him. He hadn't even disinfected the scar yet.
