Bran sat behind his desk, working out the numbers for the day and the shipments that would be required in the morning. Rubbing at his forehead, he silently cursed the mental distraction that a stranger had afforded him. Rather than try to ignore it, the quiet man fished out a leather-bound notebook from the bottom of a drawer he usually kept locked and opened it to a fresh page.
‘I saw her for a third time, today, flashing that beautiful smile of hers at a man fishing by the docks. He’s often there when she is. Maybe they’re involved. It’s really none of my business.
Why does her face stay with me? Raemhi caught me staring while I loaded the last of the crates and she almost approached the woman, probably to humiliate me. A promise of a piggyback ride and a bag of sweets when we were done for the day is all that kept her -loud- mouth shut.
I wish I knew her name. Maybe if I knew more about her I could stop dwelling on how little I know, and wondering. I keep making up my own ideas. I can’t keep working like this. Please, lovely dock-girl, either speak to me or go away. If you turned that smile my way I might----’
The ink streaked across the page as his little sister burst into the room. “Diiiiiiiinnnnnnnnneeeeeerrrrrrr time!” she sang, her ears wiggling happily as she hopped up onto his desk. The small miqo’te threw her arms out to the sides as if to say ‘tadaa!’.
“Raehmi, please, you’re going to mess up the documents.” He gave his energetic sibling a reassuring smile. “Two minutes. Promise.”
