The Argama, the Nahel Argama, and now the Ra Calium have had one returning engineer. Astonaige Medoz.

look at him. Astonaige, since his inception has been a critical background element of UC Gundam. In Zeta he is the mechanic that repairs everyone’s mobile suits. He is a brilliant technician, he kind of works miracles out of the constant lack of supplies in early ZZ, he’s a reliable fellow.

He makes so many good faces. He has a weird body.

Astonaige also is the first person on the Argama to really treat Kamille like an equal. He engages Kamille with kindness and compassion when the Argama crew is largely harsh and cold in early Zeta. He helps Kamille design the Zeta Gundam, and encourages him to share this aspect of himself with the rest of the crew. Astonaige takes care of suits, but he also takes care of people.

He is there throughout the entirety of the Gryps Conflict, and the Neo Zeon War. He stays on the Nahel Argama when it is turned over to Judau and the Shangri-la kids.

And in CCA he dies. He is standing on the Ra Cailum guiding in suits to be repaired during the battle around Axis and when it gets sidelined by a missile he is visibly caught in the blast and sent off into space. Before this his girlfriend died. He promised to make her favorite salad for her, because he is a genuinely thoughtful and kind man which is rare in Gundam. Especially in an adult.

At it feels like a genuine line was crossed. Astonaige wasn’t a pilot. Astonaige had lived through so much. Astonaige was so important, but under appreciated and then he was cast off into space without ceremony. There was no time to mourn him, he simply was gone. And like, its hitting me weird and hard. Out of all of the characters who could have died, all of the characters who deserved to or where put in places they shouldn’t have been or were being misled or whatever… Astonaige didn’t deserve it. Which is such a weird thing to say? Rarely do people in Gundam deserve to die, but like… its Astonaige, ya know?
