Brackets and Hoods of Portland, Maine

*Throwback to that time I didn’t buy this bracket that sat in the window of a friendly neighborhood shop. I don’t need to own one, but I wouldn’t mind.*

I’ve posted a Portland, Maine bracketed hood here every day for the past few years (Since 2012, I’ve posted over 800!), but I am running out of new specimens. I’ve visited every street on the peninsula within the boundaries of St. John Street to Park Street to Marginal Way to the Eastern Promenade to Fore Street to Commercial Street and back to St. John Street.

There will likely be more posts (I know I’ve missed a few), but it will be sporadic. Meanwhile, I’ll take the data and the photos I’ve amassed and organize them into a searchable database.

I was too chicken to get a front-on shot. The plaque on the house says, “Bayside, Moses Gage House, Housewright, circa 1832, Federal.”

This house is thick with siding, so it’s hard to see the whole design of the bracket. I guess we have enough to see STARS!

There is a plaque on this house that says, “Bayside, built by Elias Thomas, circa 1883, Italianate.”

There is a plaque on this house that says, “Bayside, Benjamin Dodge House, Mason, circa 1827, Greek Revival.”

These brackets are so large, I think the door is just going to fall forward one day! Beautiful, though, and STARS!
