Aesthetics aside, his appetite for the most revolutionary footwear technologies, materials and fit have fueled a special connection with Nike designer Eric Avar. The two have pushed the limits for a decade, with their vision coming full circle with the Kobe 9 Elite Low.

Design Genius The Kobe 9 Elite Low is Bryant’s most innovative shoe to-date, featuring three leading technologies: Flyknit, Flywire and Lunarlon. Flyknit provides a lightweight, breathable solution for a summer basketball shoe that performs equally well indoors or outdoors. Flyknit and Flywire technologies are a one-two punch, leading to a dynamic fit for intricate, on-court footwork. Eliminating bulk and distraction was a focus for Avar with disciplined design in a low cut with no distractions.

Purposeful Flyknit technology introduces a new way to create a shoe upper out of what is essentially yarns. It drastically reduces waste from the upper with a low cut and efficient production process compared to traditional methods.

Inspiration The Kobe 9 Elite Low brings Bryant’s muses to life. The artistry of music and its ability to move and inspire people has always intrigued the athlete. From classical to pop, he has appreciation for multiple genres. Sometimes, all it takes is a little change to make a big impact – just ask renowned designers Tinker Hatfield and Eric Avar. With the simple notion that “less is more,” they would go onto change the landscape of basketball and cross-training with the creation of the Air Flight Huarache and Air Trainer Huarache in 1992. Today, both revolutionary designs return to the culture’s forefront, while retaining what made them great.

A hardwood classic, the Air Flight Huarache emits cold tones with a reflective, all-black leather exoskeleton. Inspired by the fit of a waterski boot, a black neoprene inner-sleeve can be seen through mid-foot cutouts, reducing the amount of material while maintaining its structure. A speckled midsole with red accents around the heel and outsole add small punches of colour.

Conversely, the Air Trainer Huarache fuses softer materials with a warm, all-red suede design. Mirroring the same cutouts and sole treatments of its counterpart, a red and black neoprene bootie retains its innovative fit. Completing the design, a black forefoot strap delivers the lockdown stability that has made the legendary silhouette one-of-a-kind.

Like Nike Flyknit, Nike Flywire, and Nike Air technologies, the Nike Huarache platform was born in performance running and swiftly applied to other sport categories. Designed under the lens of reduction, the Huarache platform was one of Nike’s earliest attempts to give athletes exactly what they need to perform and nothing more. Twenty-three years after the debut of the Air Huarache, Nike Sportswear reintroduces shoes that combine the functionality of South American sandals and the fit of neoprene waterski boots – the Air Huarache Trainer.

Having successfully created a basketball rendition of the Huarache, Hatfield and Avar set out to create a cross-training shoe as well. The upper utilized a similar exoskeleton-innersleeve combination — with one addition. Recognizing the need for superior lockdown during resistance training and aerobic activities, a mesh strap was added, giving birth to boundary-smashing performance footwear.

The minimalist design of the Huarache dramatically reduced weight and inspired a new generation of Nike footwear designers to create footwear stripped to only the necessary components for elite performance.
