I had to explain to a very confused wizard today that in the muggle world weāre living in an age where kids are getting iPads and adults are buying themselves coloring books.
Elisa Shoenberger - Vocalo Storytelling Workshop Winter 2016
1. Why did you become a Vocalo Storyteller? I wanted to learn how to have better interviews and learn how to produce a piece. I have over 50 interviews of women in the arts in Chicago already recorded for my oral history project and I wanted to learn what I could do with all that tape. 2. Your piece in two lines. I interview three women artists, Nora Moore Lloyd, Carron Little, and Meida Teresa McNeal, about their community focused work here in Chicago. Each woman does important art with society in very different ways. Ā 3. Why did you tell this story? Itās not a story thatās often told. Women are doing incredible work here in Chicago and I want to make sure that their amazing contributions to art and society are known. 4. How are you a better storyteller and producer? I have learned how to get better tape through better recording techniques. I have also learned how important it is to keep rolling, to get those unexpected moments. Iāve also learned to think about sound opportunities, like recording someone while they show you their camera or review an album with them, in order to help a story come alive. Iāve learned how to write a good radio script to help tie the piece together. Finally, Iāve learned how to think of the piece as a whole in order to tell the story.
Women you should read about on International Womenās Day
Sonita Alizadehās family first considered selling her into marriage when she was just 10 years old. At 16, they said they had found her a husband, but she found a way to escape.
She wrote āBrides for Saleā, a rap tackling the issue of daughters being sold into marriages by their family and created a video showing her in a bridal dress with a barcode on her forehead. She raps: āLet me whisper, so no one hears that I speak of selling girls. My voice shouldnāt be heard since itās against Sharia.ā
Her family agreed she did not have to get married. She now lives in America, and is still writing songs.
Berta CÔceres was a Honduran indigenous and environmental rights campaigner whose high-profile campaigns against dams, illegal loggers and plantation owners were met with threats of murder and sexual violence. Last week she was murdered, days after she was threatened for opposing a hydroelectric project.
In an interview in 2013, she said: āI cannot live in peace, I am always thinking about being killed or kidnapped. But I refuse to go into exile. I am a human rights fighter and I will not give up this fight.ā
Greek lawyerĀ Christina Dimakou left her life and career in Athens to become a guardian to some of the thousands of unaccompanied child refugees who have landed on the Greek island of Lesbos in the last year. Ā
āI cannot save the world or make everything better,ā Dimakou said in an interview, ābut I can affect the things around me. If everyone does this then the world becomes better. And we become better.ā
Harnaam Kaur has polycystic ovarian syndrome, which can cause excessive hair growth. When she was 11, her beard started growing. Initially, she did everything she could to remove it. At 16, after being baptised as a Sikh, she decided to accept her facial hair. Now, she has modelled for bridal sites, a project celebrating beards and became the first bearded woman to walk in a jewellery designerās fashion show.
Ellen Murray is standing for election in West Belfast, one of Irelandās most contentious constituencies, once represented by Sinn FĆ©in leader Gerry Adams. At just 22 years of age, she is making Irish electoral history by being the first trans person to run in a Northern Irish election.
Her pledge? To fight ācontinued homophobia blighting local politicsā.
Three women founded #BlackLivesMatter, an international movement campaigning against violence toward black people. Alicia Garza was among the many who were in shock over the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who shot dead 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.Ā
She wrote an impassioned message on Facebook, ending with: āBlack people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter.ā Her friend Patrisse Cullors replied with #BlackLivesMatter. Opal Tometi added her support and the three began setting up Tumblr and Twitter accounts encouraging users to share stories of why #BlackLivesMatter. A movement was born and continues to campaign, online and offline, today.
Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentierās work on CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing could enable use to genetically modify almost anything. In theory, the technique could be used to alter any human gene. Their work has an impact on several areas of life: from genetic medicine to the development of new crops and bio-products. Given future challenges facing life on earth, this holds revolutionary promise for disease control and ecology.Ā

Voice Over
Elisa Shoenberger -
Saturday was the last day of the Vocalo Storytelling Workshop before the final piece is due. We spent the day at the Navy Pier Vocalo offices working on our voiceovers for the pieces! It was very exciting to be in the studio booth. I apparently canāt pronounce photography or photographer particularly well! Oh well. We got there eventually.Ā
The voiceover is essential to the piece; it ties the whole thing together! Ā I started working on bringing the entire piece together and it sounds really neat to have all the audio! I have some work to do to edit it down to eight minutes. I canāt wait to share this with everyone!
Chicago Women Artists
Meida Teresa McNeal is another artist Iām featuring in my piece. She is the Artistic and Executive Director of Honey Pot Performance. Honey Pot is āan Afro-diasporic creative collaborative community centered on feminist and fringe sensibilities.ā Iāll be talking with Meida Teresa McNeal about their 2014 Ā work āJuke Cry Hand Clap: A Peopleās History of House Music and Chicago Social Cultureā that focused on house and social culture in Chicago.
This is a photo of Honey Pot Performanceās 2013 piece āPrice Pointā through the Out of Site series.
Check out more information on Honey Pot Performance here: http://honeypotperformance.com/
Learn more about their upcoming gala Ā \SHIFT\ on 2/27 to fundraise for HPP and their newest work Ma(s)king Her in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion on April 14 thru 16.
Women in the Arts
My name is Elisa Shoenberger and Iām working on an oral history project about women in the arts in Chicago. Iām so thrilled and honored to be a part of the Vocalo Storytelling Workshop! For my piece, Iām featuring a few artists who give back to their communities in different ways. The first artist that Iāll be talking about is Carron Little and the public performance art series in Wicker Park called āOut of Site.ā For about 10 weeks over the summer for the past five years, Out of Site brings performance artists to the sidewalks and streets of Wicker Park. The below are photos from two artists who participated in Out of Site 2015.

Sheryl Oringās āI Wish to Sayā
Iām super thrilled that I can use the music from Ballenarca and the documentation from OUt of Site for the piece. Very exciting!
Another season of our Vocalo storytelling workshop is underway! In a few weeks weāll feature stories about people who āgive backā to their communities with their time, treasure or talent. #storiesofphilanthropy #teamvocalo #chicago #chicagocommunitytrust #trust100
