“No matter what, no matter what happens between us, you’ll never lose me.” It might hurt to be around the one he fell in love with without being hers but Allison meant more to him than anyone. No matter what their status he would always be by her side, he’d be there for her whenever he was needed. Feelings aside she was still the most important person to him besides her father. The man becoming the father he deserved. Taking him in when no one else would and giving him a life worth living. He was jumping to conclusion, assuming that even when not around that Scott was the chosen one but he couldn’t help himself. He was there, he remembered and he didn’t want to possibly get in the way. To be the one who kept her from her true love. “I’m here, Allison. I’m not going anywhere.” A faint smile painting his features.
How close they were, each touch, it brought him back down to earth. His smile genuine as he basked in the moment they were sharing. His eyes never once leaving her. Taking in her features as he almost forgot, remembering what he missed too much. Everything about her now brought back to him. That fact causing relief as life without her was never the same. Her loss stuck with him, forever heartbroken over losing the one he discreetly fell in love with. Her presence fixing what was broken, his heart whole again.
His gaze fell as she spoke about the other male, his former best friend. His hand dropping to his side as he took a step back. His top row of teeth chewing down onto his bottom lip. To hear it out loud hurt worse but he didn’t blame her, he wasn’t mad. He was no match for Scott and never would be. Slowly nodding along as he listened to every word. A hard swallow following at the mention of himself losing her. But it was what was said next that caught him off guard, eyes falling upon her once more. After everything that was said that night, everything that was done, all that was remember was him. Something he didn’t expect to hear.
“Why me?” It was a stupid question but shock had taken over. The fingers of his right hand wiping at his eyes, the tears finally dried. “What does this mean?” He needed to know, he needed it to be spelt out for him. “What does this mean for us? Do you mean that?” His heart going like the clappers as he stood in silence, his questions running through his mind as he waited for her response.
Allison closed her eyes as his words washed over her, a shiver running down her spine. They made her feel safe, made her forget about the aching pain in her gut, about the death she couldn’t remember but simultaneously never forgot. She wondered, not for the first time, how he was able to do it so easily. Take away all the bad memories, take away the pain. A faint smile flickered at her mouth then. He was the same Isaac, she realized. Always trying to bare the pain of others, but never once attempting to shed it from himself.
Opening her eyes again, wide and emotive as she took him in again, as if he might disappear at any second. She supposed that’s how it was now. Desperately hanging on to every part of him in case she lost him. Maybe that’s why his words meant so much, why they rang in her ears, why she held onto them well after they left his lips.
Allison tried to keep her voice steady as the words left her lips, but feeling him slip away caused a tremor in her words. She felt more than saw him slip away. Felt the reassurance of his forehead against hers disappear, felt him slip away from her fingertips, felt cold in every place that felt the loss of him. She let him go. She knew, perhaps, it wasn’t what he hoped to hear, but it’s what she needed him to hear. She needed him to know, needed to make it clear what he was to her, what he could be.
She gave him a soft smile as his eyes found their way back to her. His words tugged at something inside her, her heart beating out a hopeful rhythm. She fell back into him again, forehead pressed gently to his once more, fingertips ghosting along his jawline. ‘I didn’t choose you.’ She’d meant for the words to come out bold and strong, but they were a whisper, as if she were sharing a secret, as if her words were for his ears only. ‘But if I could, if I could choose anyone.’ She paused then, eyes flickering downward, the pad of her thumb ghosting against his bottom lip distractedly. ‘I’d still choose you, Isaac.’ She watched him for a moment before leaning in, pressing her lips to the corner of his mouth. A promise and a chance. A chance to let him go, but a promise that she’d be there, if he’d have her.
