Q&April Week 3: The Disaster Zone
The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, 114 years ago, so this week's 15 questions are all about disasters of all kinds in history. Do you have the knowledge and skills to survive in... The Disaster Zone?
(See Week 1: Don't Be Fooled! and Week 2: Where Did They Go?)
Reblog with your answers under a “Read More” cut.
Use only your own mind. Do not look anything up. Do not look at what other people have answered. I will try to reblog this post twice a day so that everyone who wants to play sees it. If you follow me and don’t want to see it on your dashboard over and over again, blacklist “#Q&April”. The answers will be posted one week from today. (That’s on Wednesday, the 22nd of April.)
This 1953 film based on a book by Walter Lord is still considered one of the most accurate depictions of the sinking of the Titanic.
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 began with a massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in this Southeast Asian nation.
Infamous sites of this environmental disaster? The Gulf of Mexico in 2010, the Persian Gulf in 1991, and Alaska’s Prince William Sound in 1989.
A technical mix-up between metric and customary measurements wrecked a space probe bound for this planet in 1999.
John F. Kennedy’s Presidential Library stands on Boston’s Columbia Point, a headland his great-grandparents would have passed when escaping this calamity.
A terrorist bomb destroyed the Clipper Maid of the Seas over Lockerbie, Scotland in this legendary airline’s worst loss of life— and within 4 years, the after-effects had destroyed the company itself.
In the shadow of Vesuvius, the lost cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae all lie on the shores of this Italian bay— and so does the modern city that gives it its name.
Filled with this flammable gas, the airship Hindenburg met a fiery end over Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1937.
Nature’s 40-year reclamation of the “ghost city” of Pripyat in this country has provided ecologists with an unexpected laboratory.
Unusually for an English-language popular song, Gordon Lightfoot’s tribute to this 1975 shipwreck is in 6/8 time, giving it a unique and haunting quality.
Tinker Air Force Base near this state’s capital City was the site of history’s first tornado forecast in 1948.
When an earthquake interrupted a pro baseball game in this metro area in 1989, one sportscaster called it “The greatest opening in the history of television, bar none!”
“…attempting to climb Everest is an intrinsically irrational act-- a triumph of desire over sensibility.”, begins this personal account of an unfortunate expedition.
This ship went under near the Pitcairn Islands in 1790, but it was the replica built for a 1962 film that sank in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy.
A glaciated volcano with a tongue-twisting name in this country caused massive disruptions to international air travel in 2010.
CQD!

Warning: LOUD LOUD LOUD Stormchaser Reed Timmer and Dominator 3 on Stagecoach Trail/Galena Road, Lena, Illinois. April 17, 2026.
Storm chaser footage on Stagecoach Trail, Lena, Stephenson County, Illinois.
Lena, Stephenson Co., IL. Time lapse of rain-wrapped tornado yesterday 25 miles south of me.
Nobody was seriously injured or killed. Part of the roof on the Lena-Winslow school collapsed while the Illinois High School Association Music Contest was being held. . I don't know why Le-Win and the IHSA didn't cancel it. The weather was crazy and there were severe weather warnings, flash flood watches and alternating tornado watches and warnings nonstop. Some sources call it an enhanced F2, others an F3.
Screenshot of drone footage in town. The power was out at my house for almost twenty-four hours. The well has an electric pump so no water. We have little Coleman-type lanterns, some battery operated candles, a water cooler plus a weather radio with a battery charger so everything sucked a little less.
Google maps still has that on there as of April 18th
It's that time of the year again!
Welp. It's that time of the year! What time? Twister time! The sky looks ominous and it got warm all of a sudden. Spinny time? I'm making sure my phone's charged. My brother has a radio with weather and a flashlight, also a charger. When there's funnel clouds, we go outside and watch downstairs to the basement. There's no tornado sirens out here. This town is so backwards they still use fire whistles in this day an age and nobody uses the siren at the fire station for emergencies. I always know there's one in the area because the pressure crashing down makes my eardrums feel like they've jumped down my carotid arteries.
some days you cannot help but pity some people
