gd made this holiday specifically for me
Important Shavuot suggestion: make cheese fondu + bread. you can say ha motzi, you can have dairy food, and it’s fucking delicious.
Shavuot is the most underrated member of shalosh regalim. spread this post to increase awareness of the beauty of Shavuot.
me: thinks abt the fact that there a multiple genders described in the Torah that lots of trans/nb jews identify with
me:
[Image description: 2 men are standing amongst other people in what seems like an LGBT+ Pride event. The gentleman on the left, who looks like he is in his 60s and has gray hair and a beard, is holding a large Pride rainbow flag with a white Jewish Star in the center. The gentleman on the right is holding a slightly smaller, but still rather large, rainbow sign that reads “#AllahLovesEquality.” A red, half-moon symbol and a black Arabic city-scape are also printed on the sign. ]

The role some Jews played in the Atlantic slave trade, both as traders and as slave owners, has long been ...
Yes, several American Jews owned slaves. Yes, the past often can be disturbing. We must learn from it, in order to create a present and future where every last human being, each created in God’s Image, is respectfully and compassionately treated.

Lecha dodi, traditionally sung on shabbos eve, is one of my favorite piyutim and I think that the Abayudaya version is one of my favorites!
Abayudaya is the name of the Jewish communities of Uganda, of which there are several. They’re known for their music (among many other things!) which contains many qualities familiar to other Jews while mixing in Luganda vocabulary and East African musical features.
They live in Eastern Uganda near the town of Mbale and number around 2000–which is miraculous because, due to persecution from the Idi Amin regime, there were as few as 300 Abayudaya people around in the ‘70s.
If you want to learn more about them, check out their entry on Bechol Lashon: http://bechollashon.org/projects/abayudaya/abayudaya.php
Shabbat Shalom!
I swear empathy will be the death of me.
nah. the ones who are dead are the ones whose heart is shut and cold. your empathy is what makes you, and keeps you, ALIVE. i know it feels dangerous and vulnerable to be too open-hearted, too generous, but it actually means you are STRONG. because it means your humanity has survived in a world that tries to kill it everyday, that tries to scare it into thinking empathy means weakness. empathy means hope & resilience & power.
