       there was nowhere safe to cry in the hagreeves’ home.     their ROOMS were certainly the first place reginald would look if he heard the telltale signs of sniffling,      the weakness that warbled their little voices.    what kind of superhero cried ?   still,     ben was crumpled against the couch,    wound into a tight ball.     maybe,    if he focused for long enough,    he could make the entire world fade away.    there was a patch of drying blood on his forehead and he couldn’t tell if it was his or   -    there were footsteps in the hallway,    a door opening,    and ben curled further in on himself.

        a  quarter  past  ten,  on  the  dot !   she’d  dutifully  made  sure  to  see  that  the  children  were  all  in  bed  at  half  past  nine,  tucking  them  in  and  saying  good  night  before  going  back  to  reginald’s  office  to  see  if  he  needed  anything  from  her.   as  usual,  he’d  said  no;  nighttime  was  always  the  time  he  spent  writing  down  his  reports  and  observations  on  the  children  for  the  day   ------  and  so  nighttime  for  her  was,  basically,  free  time.   but  of  course,  it  wasn’t  always.
