Paintings like those of Mark Rothko that don't need words beside them to inspire, astonish, and move us were what first gave us the ideas for our play, RETROSPECTIVE, about an artist who feels the same way at his own show.
Putting up a play anywhere is a test of imagination, energy, resilience, resources, and perseverance. But to do so for the first time in London, the theatre capital of the world? That's a serious examination. We're posting about the experience so others can enjoy the ride vicariously & get inspired
The actors' art and the director's craft combine in the rehearsal rooms to make theatre live for the UK premiere of RETROSPECTIVE. Get your tix here: https://www.baronscourttheatre.com/retrospective

We asked our actors why they care and commit to #maketheaterlive
Part I Here’s what our Noah Huntley(RORY McGRORY) & Sarah Louise Pearcy (PIPPA) said: March 12th, 2020. Do you remember where you were on that date? On March the 12th, 2020, my co-playwright, Joe Queenan, and I were set to audition actors for the staging of our second co-written play, Grudges. That’s the day the pandemic hit the fan in the USA with the NBA canceling its season, ERs…
03/03/17, this community embraced me for the last time as their colleague and so-called leader. (This group often did the leading) For 17 years, the energy, intelligence, & compassion of these people -- & many not pictured -- sustained and enriched me. These photos surfaced today sparking gratitude
Yup! I'm promoting someone else's show for a change. Go see The Porch on Windy hill at Urban Stages in NYC

Other places we lurk
Why not post? A few other links: Started our series Chasing the Dead: Amateur Adventures in Genealogy. That motive has hovered over me for many years now and Halloween/All Saints Day this year (or Samhain as the Celts celebrated the event) seemed a good time to start publishing in pieces my new book Chasing The Dead. After all, any method — shy of Ouija boards and seances — that gets me closer…

Our War Correspondent (Bravely) Covers Portland Hellhole
Luck is the residue of design as Branch Rickey wisely opined. And our co-founder, T.J. Elliott, had the good luck to plan his visit to Portland to be at the opening of Claire Elliott’s show at One Grand gallery AND his grandson’s magnificent Paw Patrol themed fifth birthday party just as POTUS designated that city to be a ‘hellhole’ in need of military intervention. His journalistic work ended up…

Z in RETROSPECTIVE Is Jasmine Dorothy Haefner; So Special, No One Else Would Do
Jasmine Dorothy Haefner Brings So Much To All She Does click here to see JDH as Z in retrospective What forces form a fine actor? Experience. Intelligence. Discipline. Feeling. All of these but also the skill and courage to make their own path through not just each work but through ‘the business’, and a capacity for reflecting on each moment in the career (which sometimes careens) and…

Actors Have a Target; A Word With Many Meanings
This is a truth for me, but only ONE truth. HT https://substack.com/@juliavendrell for the image Talking to one of our actors during a rehearsal for RETROSPECTIVE (opening August 13th for just three performances at AMT Theatre 354 W. 45th St. in NYC, get Tix here), the topic of persuasion arose. My characters are ALWAYS persuading someone to ‘see something the way you see it’, to feel or act in…
