Elizabeth had fallen asleep with her head in his lap, the book sinking to cover her face. He'd lifted it out of her grip, her fingers first clutching and then going lax, and waited as long as he could.

When he'd woken her, he was dizzy sitting upright. The linen shift scratched across his skin like dry sand caught beneath a collar. By some miracle, he'd made it back to the sickroom on his own feet and without falling over on the way.

Sleep came quickly, but not easily. His dreams were shattered by fever into nonsensical shards. Flashes of blades and blood and ocean depths, of shimmering scales and rotting muscle on moving bone; he half-woke again and again and again only to retreat back into sleep from the physical misery of his head, his side, his chest.

Pure exhaustion, or the mercy of a holy creature, dragged him deeper after some time and he slept hard, dreamless at last.

Started a Norribeth fanfic!! It's been in my head for the past year and she's almost done!

Please, PLEASE, I beg you to read this fanfic. Whether you’re a fan of the ship or simply of potc, and you love reading books with a refined, thoughtful style that transcends the words themselves. Because that is exactly what this is: a story that analyses the vicissitudes of its characters through a poetic lens, one of those deeply moving tales found in the most famous classic books, where every sentence is imbued with an unexpected and mysterious thought.

It’s really worth it, believe me.

A harmless little spoiler, but one I just have to share: at one point, Elizabeth can’t remember what happened to her over the course of a few days. I envy her, because I’d love to lose my memory so I could read this fic and Redemption’s Promise all over again lmao.

I’ve only just reached the end of Chapter 8, but even so, I’m already worried it’ll be over in a flash.
