hi! these are good questions. you don't need a degree to work in animation, you need a portfolio. you learn a lot going to school but i think the most valuable thing it gives you is connections. lots of people go to school for a year or two and then bounce once they get a job.

 If you don't want to go to school at all the best thing to do would be to draw a lot, comics , characters, BG’s, make a short film. post all of it so people can see it. apply directly to companies internships/jobs on their website.

and sorry, you have to be born and raised in burbank CA to get a job in animation, its a secret rule. JUST KIDDING. lots of people relocate for jobs. if you want to work in animation your more likely to get a job if you are in the LA area. i have met several people who moved out here with out a job first and it worked out. but thats not where all the animation jobs are at so don't worry if you aren't in LA. some people have enough of a reputation they can live anywhere they want and just freelance from home.
