give me kids who were part of the timbits hockey program as kids, but left because they liked fighting the other kids a little too much. kids who grew up playing street hockey bcz they couldn't afford hockey skates + lessons, and then one day switched their hockey stick for an exy racquet and never looked back. kids who tore up their classmates during the exy unit in elementary p.e. bcz they played in nearby leagues. kids who made exy balls out of snow and played in their bulky jackets because their moms said they couldn't take them off. kids who left early on fridays to play a game right after school, and then came home to watch a pro exy game. kids who showed up at the outdoor ball hockey rinks to play a scrimmage bcz there's too many of those and not enough exy rinks. kids who borrowed armour and gear from their older siblings + neighbours + friends, even if it was old hockey gear they repurposed, because their own exy gear was damaged. kids who tried out for lacrosse, but didn't make the cut, so they switched to another similar sport and found their true calling. kids who somehow, against all odds, made it to the ncaa, and have their entire hometown cheering for their school, just because of that one person. kids who won't hesitate to chirp their mark or fight an opponent, and then will be the politest person to exist off the court. kids who become so well known and loved that their home town adds a sign that says 'welcome to the home of [person]'. kids who become adults that have never stopped loving exy, that are there to inspire a new generation, that make stupid tim hortons ads, that lean into the canadian stereotypes bcz it's funny to see people's reactions, that take impossible shots and make impossible saves that'll be remembered for all time.
