Summary: Magnus was the new 5th year, with incredible ancient magic and the role of a hero to fulfill. He faced hardships and made friends, sacrificing his own well-being. 

And you will be the new 6th year, reborn in a dragon riding family, the Draggunnars. That meant being raised in seclusion on the Hebridean Islands, Scotland, learning everything you could about dragons under the watchful eyes of your pureblood family. That is, until your father couldn’t refuse Hogwarts invitation that year again.

POPPY'S BIRTHDAY

“It’s Poppy’s birthday today.”

You snorted, crossing your arms as you looked him up and down. “We know.”

He rolled his eyes, “She wanted to celebrate, and Magnus had the incredible idea that–”

Ominis sighed loudly, he looked towards the ground, away from the sound of Sebastian’s voice. “Tell me there’s no party down there.”

Sebastian gave you two an awkward smile.

“You know, I’m not supposed to lie to my friends.”

“Yet you do that all the time,” Ominis replied, glaring towards Sebastian’s voice. His mood not only soured but turned fiery. There was anger in his unseen eyes, on his pink skin. He shook his head, his lips curling slightly into a frown of their own.

TYING UP A PRANK WITH JEALOUSY

“What were you doing?”

“Studying?”

“What kind of studying?”

Ominis’ voice grew quieter, more severe. A rumbling preparation for something big. Sebastian knew that tone and knew he was in trouble every time Ominis sounded like that. But he wasn’t sure what response would satisfy Ominis’ jealousy.

“Potions.”

Ominis scoffed, and Sebastian decided it was safer – but scarier – to go straight to the point.

“Are you jealous?”

NIGHTMARES

So, he fought against sleep instead of his feelings.

And, oh boy, did they fight back. Ominis dreamt of a nice summer afternoon. The sun against his skin, the smell of freshly brewed tea, the gentle sound of you breathing near his ear. Your head against his shoulder while the two of you enjoyed a picnic. Then, footsteps approached and the usual loudness of Sebastian arrived. He was friendly and welcomed. However, your weight against Ominis shoulder would disappear and welcome Sebastian enthusiastically. To which Sebastian would mock Ominis. The warmth of the sun would disappear as Sebastian told Ominis with confidence that you’d never like him back.

AMORTENTIA

“You’ve been busy.” Sebastian started with a sarcastic tone.

Ominis barely turned his face towards him, swallowing the food. “Winter Break is over.” He brushed off Sebastian’s attempt at getting anything from him.

After a snort, Sebastian smirked. “Fine, let me be frank. What did you smell on your Amortentia?”

The blind boy raised an eyebrow, “Why are you curious?”

“Because” Sebastian started with a cocky tone, a smugness to his words as if he was so sure of Ominis’ Amortentia. Even if he had not said anything yet. “You did look like you were about to throw up, rushing out. Don't think I didn’t notice. Even Draggunnar did.”

Ominis’ eyebrows raised for a single moment, one Sebastian noticed. He smirked as Ominis averted his eyes, quickly trying to look impassive again.

LIGHT AND DARKNESS

Sebastian could tell that feeling was unhealthy. A feeling of owning, of pride and selfish desire. He couldn’t force his feelings on anyone, and he knew that’s what he had tried to do. He couldn’t have you submit, even if a part of him – one with that same darkness – lulled him to. That was why he was reckless. Because he heard that tempting echo, when he should’ve fought with whatever reminiscent of dark arts still lingered inside of him. Instead of pursuing you, now Sebastian wanted to smooth things over. Wanted to make up for his mistakes and angry feelings. Hopefully, he'd be able to apologize during Yule.

Hopefully, seeing Anne and reliving the forgiveness she bestowed him, Sebastian would be able to ask for the same thing from you. It’d be hard, especially as it was in your right to deny it. And that was what still frightened him. Was he deserving? Somehow, it always returned to that. An inferior complex mixed with a god complex. The uncertainty of his actions and the certainty of its rightness. His lightness and his darkness fighting each other ever since he trailed a path that he had no business following.

ROOM OF REQUIREMENT

The room was enormous. There was a vivarium on the other end of the room, beautifully white frames with green light coming from inside it. Escaping the glass windows. No way was it an expanded space, was it? Trees adorned it, with butterflies and some fwoopers flying about. You saw the walls with portraits and Gryffindor paraphernalia. There were potions tables and planters lined up in the middle of the room, atop a red round rug.

As you entered, you realized there was perhaps another vivarium upstairs? To the right. And another to the left. You could feel your eyes doubling in size as you realized if Seraphine didn’t fit in the room itself, she probably would fit in any of those spaces. Looking up you could see a beautiful skylight and red drapes hanging as decoration. There was a light source too, for whoever was there needed to stay until the sun had already set. Or so you assumed. There was a hive of some sort on the column to the right, and shelves upon shelves of books on the walls near the first-floor vivarium.

Standing in the middle of the room, you swept the place as you twirled. There was an upstairs above the entrance too and a room to the side.

Magnus shrugged, “Through there is my private library and study? There are some comfy setees and where I grow my moonstone and other crystals.” He explained, standing next to you and pointing to the room to the side. “It was a last-minute expansion, so it’s not fully decorated.” He shrugged again, “I keep some relics I’ve found in adventures and such there too.”

“Is that another vivarium?” You asked, looking above the entrance.

“The mountain one.”

You scoffed, looking at him with big round eyes and raised eyebrows. “Just the mountain one.” You repeated, shaking your head side to side as you mimicked his voice poorly. Clearly, a little annoyed at such impressiveness he seemed to have come into possession. And kept as a secret. “H– How?” You stuttered as you asked in disbelief, shrugging your shoulders a little. You rested your hands on your hips, giving the room another sweep with your eyes. It was hard to believe a young man managed to decorate and acquire all the pieces that made that room simply fantastic.

“Professor Weasley insisted it would be useful last year for me. I thought we could share it if you’d like?” He offered, shrugging again.

THE INCIDENT

Saturday arrived again. This time together with an owl. The morning was gloomy and cold, your mood matched it. Sebastian’s overly affectionate week that turned into a week of absence weighed heavy in your heart. Sure, you were able to spend time with your friends when Sebastian wasn’t around, yet it felt… strange. Almost ominous. The letter that morning contained Magnus’ handwriting. Thin and messy, as if he was in a hurry to get the contents out.

Come to the Hospital Wing.

Sebastian’s hurt but alive.

You could feel the air of tiredness and disappointment through those two simple phrases. It seemed as if Magnus was used to Sebastian’s shenanigans involving dangerous situations but wasn’t looking forward to dealing with them again. You had heard stories about spells going wrong or visits to desolated catacombs, but that seemed to be a thing of the past as all such stories were described in the past tense. Perhaps all accumulated in the year prior.

THE GIRL AND THE FRIEND

Sebastian scowled at your yellow eyes searching and finding Ominis reading yet again. Rolling his eyes, he buried his face inside the tome he was reading. Trying to get busy, however, turned into a pointless endeavour.

He saw Ominis smile to himself and, for the first time in a while, considered his feelings. Sebastian had been so focused on his disagreement with you that he hadn’t stopped to think much of others caught up on it. Especially now that he considered Ominis a potential identity of that mysterious man. Then, what if Ominis liked you back? What if you confessed and Ominis accepted your feelings? Then what would be of Sebastian’s future?

He’d lose the girl and his friend.

But Sebastian couldn’t let that happen.

HYPOCRITE

You felt your heart skip a beat, realizing he was barely an inch away from you. You exhaled shakily, the hot air reaching Ominis’ cold cheeks. You closed your eyes, scared of what you’d do if you kept in a trancelike state admiring his face. And you cursed at yourself. How could you think your feelings were unresolved? You knew exactly what you wanted – who you wanted. You knew if you kissed him that you’d not think of anyone else or anything for that matter, but his soft lips against yours. You wished he’d just finish getting closer, too scared you’d end up doing it yourself. You cursed yourself again, knowing you were the biggest hypocrite for not being honest about this. To him and to yourself.

He noticed, just as you did, how close the two of you had gotten. Breaths mixing, heat being shared. It didn’t matter how cold your faces felt or your fingers were, the heat inside of you both was warming enough. Perhaps even burning hot. Ominis’ mouth hanged loose, slightly agape. Simply stunned at how easy it was to be in your presence. And how hard it was too. He could imagine himself simply inching closer, with the rate of your fast breathing he’d have no problem finding your lips with his. He could almost see you. The sharp yellow eyes, the softness of your long dark hair, the narrow bridge of your nose, and the beautifully drawn cupid’s bow. But your lips he didn’t care to see. He wanted to feel them. Taste them.

CONFESSION

“Draggunnar, do you have someone you’re romantically interested in?”

You glared at her, shaking your head as you felt your face flush at her betrayal. “Poppy…”

“If you don’t answer, you can kiss someone here.” Imelda challenged you, taking away Poppy’s opportunity to think of a challenge herself.

Poppy glared at Imelda with a frown, and you did the same.

You could either admit you liked someone but omit that this person was Ominis. Or kiss someone, which would’ve to be Sebastian otherwise the ruckus would be something else. Even if you’d like it to be Ominis. Well… you could kiss Ominis. You shook your head in denial, knowing that wasn’t an option. Your lips were pursed tight, and a scowl was etched on your face, as you exhaled through your nose.

“I have someone I like.” You said simply.

Sebastian looked at you expectantly, waiting that this would be your confession.

INVASIVE DREAMS

“Sebastian?” He called quietly, unsure if his friend was awake already or still dreaming. But he exhaled sharply, grunting, and pulling at his sheets again. His pillow fell to the ground due to his brusque movements. Not responding Ominis directly, prompted him to sit in his bed. Ominis opened his mouth to call Sebastian again when all the tension left Sebastian’s body in a strangled, drawn-out moan.

Ominis froze still with his mouth agape as he listened to his friend, petrified. He felt his face heat up, in embarrassment and pure rage. He inhaled deeply, a shaky gust of wind as he bent down and picked a book up from a pile next to his bed. Sebastian had finished and was panting, slowly calming down, when Ominis threw the book in his direction. Hoping with all his unbridled anger to strike him. But, if he failed, there were four more tomes in the pile. Yet, they were not necessary.

Sebastian gasped, opening his eyes wide as he felt something hit hard against his arm. “Ouch! What–?” He blinked in the darkness, quickly finding the wounded spot and rubbing it. “Ominis?” He asked as he sat in his bed, innocent and clueless. Sebastian touched around his bed to realize he was the only thing there.

Ominis scoffed loudly, “Damn you, Sebastian! You exchange one kiss, and your mind goes straight to the gutter.”

MORALITY

“But I’m not sure if only learning in class is enough…” You frowned.

“What?” Ominis whispered quietly, there was a firmness to his tone that you found yourself trying to explain your reasoning. Clumsily.

“I mean, take Magnus for example. How hard was for him fighting dark wizards when he was playing the role of a hero? If he had had better guidance…” You trailed off as you saw Sebastian smile amused at you, he nudged Ominis with his elbow. He saw a bit of Magnus in yourself, from last year. In the beginning of his journey.

Ominis scoffed, “It’s forbidden for a reason. You’ll get into trouble if you try to learn it outside of class.” He warned you with a slightly worried tone. If you listened carefully, you’d have been able to hear desperation there.

Sebastian shrugged, rolling his eyes, and facing away. “But it doesn’t hurt to know. I’m sure Amit will, roughly, agree.” He smirked at Amit that pursed his lips tight and returned to his book, deciding not to further comment due to Ominis’ mood aggravating.

Ominis groaned, “Didn’t you just say how easy it is to become lost to the dark arts, Sebastian? To increasingly corrupt oneself?” He tilted his face towards his friend, frowning angrily. The pleading he tried with you was nowhere to be found as he lectured Sebastian. It seemed to you they had this conversation many times before.

Sebastian smirked, “I did. And I stand by it. But it is true that I once thought it to be a tool of knowledge–”

“But it had shown itself to be a pathway to losing yourself.” Ominis interrupted, unsatisfied at allowing space for Sebastian to consider the dark arts even on a remotely grey light.

ANNE

As Natty announced her presence, a gaunt looking girl stood from one of the stools in front of the kitchen counter. Her clothes were simple, a white dress shirt with a green vest pared with a green overskirt and a brown skirt underneath. She held delicately a chipped blue teacup with one hand and the matching saucer with the other, her chapped lips had just parted away with the brim of the china as her eyes widened in excitement at Natty’s voice. She quickly rested the saucer and teacup onto the counter with a clink sound as she stood, receiving brightly with open arms Natty’s own around her neck for a gentle hug. The two girls giggled as they exchanged greetings, whispers you couldn’t make out but seemed sweet. You could tell she was Anne Sallow, not only for Sebastian’s frozen figure at the door, but for their clear similar appearance.

Despite Anne visibly being eaten away by the curse that plagued her, she had the features Sebastian had once mentioned to you. Her dark brown hair was braided into a low bun, with a charming fringe covering her forehead. Even as it looked brittle and dull, you could tell how beautifully luscious it once was as it remained thick and properly taken care of. As she hugged Natty, you could see under her closed eyes, deep purple undereyes you were sure even make up would fail in hiding. But her eyelashes were similar to Sebastian’s, full albeit his were shorter. Her hands around Natty seemed fragile, with slender and thin fingers with pale skin and visible green veins.

As she smiled, comfortable and safe, Anne opened her eyes to see over Natty’s shoulder the rest of your group still standing at the door. You could identify many emotions cross her glossy light brown eyes in a moment’s notice: surprise, fear, nervousness, pity, sorrow, then a gentle happiness.

“Sebastian, Ominis. Magnus.” She called to all her friends, her voice was soft and carried a heaviness you knew the four of them shared. Some sort of bittersweetness.

SWAYING EMOTIONS

“Clearly, you have the ability to sway other people’s emotions. Mine included.” Ominis teased further as you hadn’t reacted to his previous provocation, but he ended up upsetting himself instead. Sebastian’s also, he thought. After all, no one would have described her the way he did when Ominis asked, with the same interestas Sebastian had. Even at the beginning when you barely knew each other, Sebastian was already infatuated by the new girl. Sure, he was a sweet young man that could be easily distracted by looks, but as times passed the way he pronounced your name had turned sweeter and sweeter.

“She’s tall and has presence.” Sebastian had said categorically when Ominis asked him about why everyone was so stunned by your looks a couple weeks ago. “You know, just long legs and pretty fingernails.” He must’ve rolled his eyes, seeming uninterested. Only when Ominis had rolled his eyes and snickered at Sebastian’s lack of attention, he elaborated. “Fine. Fine. She has this silky long black hair, it ends right by her hips, I imagine. If it’s not tied, obviously… She braids it!” He must have shrugged, feigning unimportance. “But there are always strands falling out of it. I heard someone commenting how messy it is, I find it charming! Can you imagine tucking one behind her ear? Oh! Such pretty ears… Thin and slightly pointy, but no adornments at all. And her nose? It’s also thin and quite large, with a high bridge and a pretty beauty mark right next to her right eye. And her eyes! The goldest yellow I’ve ever seen, like melted gold. Not that it helps you in any way to know. But it’s pretty. Slightly sharp and narrow. She could kill with a glare, kind of good you can’t see.” He snickered. “She has long limbs and is as tall as me. A little shorter. I envy you for growing taller than me last summer, you’re the perfect height for her. Either way, I wonder how soft her hands are? What do you reckon?”
