//So instead of going to sleep, I made this - thank you OFMD brain rot...
//off to bed with me - be back tomorrow <3
the murder attempt though (about which Stede is nonchalant to a concerning degree, but that's another post)
-- WHERES THE POST OP
here <3 thank you for asking :)
cw for discussion of suicidal thoughts
Tell me, if someone were to confess to you they were planning to murder you, burn your face off and steal your identity, what would be your response?
Oh.
And, um. Is that still on the cards, or -
<- If it's this, you might be Stede Bonnet.
Throughout the show, whenever Stede learns his life is in danger he's surprisingly - chill about it. It happens twice in the very first episode. The first time when Buttons tells him about the mutiny and he takes it as a performance review ("What I'm hearing is, they could do with more structure."), even though mutiny definitey meand "Your crew wants to kill you". The second time is when Olu has to ask if he wants to live twice before Stede gives an answer that sort of approaches affirmative ("That's a tough question"? "I think so"???? What kind of answers are those Stede, please go to therapy).
Learning about the mutiny plot doesn't change the way he treats his crew. Ed tells him about the murder attempt, and it doesn't change Stede's feelings towards him at all. Mary tries to stab him with a skewer and it literally fixes their relationship.
And of course it's comedic but all of this is not how a normal, well-adjusted person should react, probably. It doesn't strike me as something a person who values their own life a lot would do. And Stede - doesn't. He's not actively suicidal; he's not attempting to take his own life nor is this something he thinks about. I don't even really know what to diagnose him with here, but maybe some sort of passive suicidal ideation? Because he really just seems careless. Not in a way were he's reckless, he's very conscious of his physical safety. But when someone actively tries to kill him he's prepared to just kinda let it happen, and he doesn't hold grudges about it.
Even in ep9, when he receives his death sentence, he's like "Yeah, that's fair, I've been a horrible person, I deserve this". It's so odd - he used to be haunted by Badminton's ghost but we resolved that in ep2. Yes, leaving your family in the middle of the night is a dick move, but he was really unhappy there and the death penalty seems a little extreme. There's not really anything leading up to this that would justify his immediate acceptance.
Except.
It has been there from the start, throughout the show. And the execution is where it ends.
Because as soon as things are getting serious - when he's blindfolded in front of a firing squad - he realizes something.
Oh God, I don't want to die!
The thing about being suicidal is that most people don't actually want to die. They just want a way out of a situation they find unbearable. The difference between a failed and a successful suicide attempt is whether or not the person attempting realizes this in time to save themselves.
This is an important moment for Stede, because this is when he realizes dying will not solve his problems. He has to "face the music"; but his death isn't the way to do it.
He's hurt people, but dying won't fix that. And life - even his! - is always worth living.
“Time just for reading?” They echoed with a little laugh. They couldn’t help it. The idea was simply so absurd that it had caught Ely by surprise. Looking down at the cover, they became a little uneasy.
“I don’t- I don’t want anyone to think that I’m asking for time just to read. I’m alright as I am.” One of the worst fates on a pirate ship was outgrowing your usefulness and Ely knew that. It was what had happened to the last cabin boy.
A soft smile crossed Stede’s lips. He couldn’t help and wonder what his life would have been like without books - without his escape, without his release from the real world into one of history and intrigue. ❝Reading is a very important skill, could take someone away from this life if they didn’t want to be here.❞ Stede paused, eyeing the other for a moment as they spoke. He shook his head reaching to put his hand on their shoulder. ❝On my ship, you can ask, but I won’t be telling anyone that you have, cause you haven’t, I simply will say you, like Lucius, want to broaden your horizons, an’ that’s okay.Or, I'll say nothin' at all, an' they can let it go.❞

A brief conversation I had with @mikimeiko on their lovely meta about the motive of loss and abandonment made me think about miscommunication some more, and how horrible Calico Jack was to Stede.
When Stede meets Calico Jack for the first time this is what he says to him:
Who's the big gal?
Off to a terrible start, and it only goes downhill from there.
As others have pointed out, this is a very mean thing to say in general and absolutely unacceptable to say to a queer man in particular, and Ed knows that. He's trying to do damage control
He's fucking joking. You're not a girl.
but he's laughing along with Jack - or maybe trying to laugh it off? He immediately gets physical with Jack as well, and it looks to me like the sort of thing you might do, when someone you like just has said something that makes you intensely uncomfortable but you really don't want it to be a big deal. He's performing closeness with Jack: Look, I like this guy he wouldn't say something like that he doesn't mean it. While at the same time he literally jumps on him almost as if that would distract from the really hurtful thing Jack has just said.
But. Look at Stede's face while Ed does this.
He knows guys like Jack. All his life guys like this have shamed him for being "weak" and effeminate. And he knows the kind of guy who would laugh along with that for whatever reason - to protect his own image, to not cause a conflict. He's already tired of this interaction. Look at this sad little nod after Ed says "You're not a girl." (sorry for bad quality, this is not art, just to illustrate my point)
God this is. Painful. I feel this expression in my soul.
And he's still trying to play nice with Jack! He's offering his hand, he's welcoming him. He's even ignoring Jack's sarcastic little "Lovely", as they shake hands. Because Jack's a friend of Ed's and he's used to putting up with a little bit of bullying. But the disappointment here is palpable. And so is the resignation. Because Ed may not be a bully, but (from Stede's perspective) he doesn't defend Stede from abuse either, and part of Stede expected this to happen eventually. I'm not even sure he thinks about it as betrayal per say - it's one of the things that just happen. Bullying is inevitable and people are only friendly with him as long as no one can see.
But! From Ed's perspective, this isn't what's happening at all! I'm not saying he doesn't have baggage, but he probably didn't grow up with this specific kind of constant ostracizing. To him, it's all just friendly banter. He doesn't notice how hurt Stede is because, well, Stede is very good at not letting it on when something really hits him. To Ed, he's just averted a crisis, introduced his old best friend to his new best friend, and now they're all gonna go have breakfast together :D
It gets even worse later on, when Stede asks Jack about his ship. If you've ever been bullied tell me if this sounds familiar: You were just trying to defend yourself, but the bully suddenly starts a crying performance, and now you're the mean one. Meanwhile, all the bully's friends flock to them and comfort them because you really hurt their feelings, how dare you! I don't even think I need to talk about this further.
And then. It all culminates in the beach scene. After being literally peed on, Steve has finally had enough. He's an adult; he doesn't have to put up with this shit. He's still avoiding confrontation though, he simply extracts himself from the situation.
But Ed, who was just having a fun day at the beach, doesn't understand why Stede is suddenly leaving. Ed wants Stede to be there and share in the fun! More importantly, he wants to show this part of himself to Stede. He wants this to be a bonding experience, and he's really excited about it. So he tries to convince him to stay.
I might just head back to the ship.
But Ed (contrary to Stede tbh) is actually good at communication, and he wants to know what tf is going on, so he asks again.
And I think it's actually a testament to how close Stede's gotten to him that he actually tries to communicate his feelings for once.
What he says: "I'm not finding any of this a blast actually! I don't like to drink 'til I puke, or get pelted with coconuts. Or making a turtle fight a crab? That's just mean!" Now it's not that he finds any of these actions distasteful in particular. These are all just stand-ins for what Stede is actually angry about. Which is that Jack is hurting him in a way he's been hurt all his life, but he's not saying that. Because the first rule of the bullied kid is, you do not let the abuser (or their allies) know when they got to you. And in this moment, to him, Ed is an ally of Jack's.
Ed doesn't have all the context though. He doesn't know this about Stede's past, he doesn't know how sensitive of a subject this is for Stede. Fuck, he doesn't even know about all the interactions Stede had with Jack. Look at his expressions, as Stede goes on his little rant:
Why would you say this I thought we were friends :(
In this moment, Stede is triggering all of Ed's insecurities. To him, Stede just described a fun afternoon. He feels judged, like Stede is shaming him for his lack of sophistication.
Then Stede delivers the killing blow: "Honestly Ed? I don't like who you are around this guy." And he means: I thought I could trust you, I thought you wouldn't find this kind of behaviour acceptable.
What Ed hears is: You aren't good enough for me. I have seen a less refined side of you and I don't like it.
Which is why he says "But this is who I am." He's a pirate, and he'll never be an aristocrat, and if Stede doesn't like it, well, Ed also thought Stede was one of the good ones :'(
Just. A masterclass in miscommunication.

A smile lightly tugged at the corners of Ely's mouth at Stede's reaction. The offer to take a book was much appreciated. They hadn't wanted to ask to borrow one before for fear of coming off as rude but they'd convinced themselves that so long as they gave a book first, it was alright to ask.
"Really?" They asked excitedly, going over to the shelves "Do you have any suggestions?"
❝Of course, ma library is open whenever, help yourself, I've offered it to the rest of the crew, but only a few can read. Aren't books magical?❞ Stede grinned at the question, placing his new book on his desk and heading over to the bookshelves. ❝ Well, that depends, what do you like? Fiction, non-fiction, action, adventure - romance? ❞
Ely gave a small shrug, running their finger over the leather bound book spines. They were beautifully crafted with foiled spines and cursive titles.
"I don't know... I tend to just read whatever I'm given or that I can find." They'd never had books as pretty as these at the Foundling Hospital and Ely didn't really know where to start. "besides, there's not all that much time for reading on a ship."
Stede chuckled lowly, slipping a couple of books from their places on the shelves and starting a small collection in his arms. ❝There's always time for reading - I'll make sure of that.❞ He offered them a smile, pulling out a smaller book. ❝ Try this one - that's one of my favourites, written by a Brit - it's seen the stage an' all - I think you'll like it.❞

"I'm not sure Mr. Hands or the Captain would be happy that I was reading instead of working." They pointed out. However, they couldn't help smiling at the offer.
"I used to read a lot of Shakespeare, actually." They informed, taking the copy from Stede "I liked Hamlet best... Romeo and Juliet too... I suppose they're the most common so it makes sense." Ely carefully flicked through the books pages "I haven't read this one, though. Thank you."
❝Ah - don't you concern yourself with Ed, I can talk him round, an' Ed'll sort Izzy out - no problem. Keep that to yourself though.❞ Stede smirked, giving them a slight wink. ❝Not saying you shouldn't work however, but we can see about getting you some specific time just to read.❞ ❝Ah, a well read person then I see - enjoy that one, but I do recommend, if you'd like something different - try 'Tamburlaine' by Christopher Marlowe, there are theories that say he helped Shakespeare write some of his works. I don't know myself course, but it is fascinating.❞
Ed + how knowing Stede has changed him
Stede's eyes blinked open, the sun dazzling him as he recoiled from it. His mouth was dry and everything hurt ever so slightly, it felt like he had been beaten with a stick all over his body repeatedly for a week. ❝Ow...❞ His mind thought back to previous events, the last thing he remembered.... oh no... the last thing he recalled was falling off of the revenge, a yell, and the sea whipping him up into its waves. This was not good. He took a breath, wincing as he sat up, managing to open his eyes properly to survey his surroundings. A few trees, the ocean, a body, coconuts - wait - Arching a brow, Stede blinked a couple times, rolling his shoulders and standing, he made his way over to the body he had seen, he wasn't the only one who'd fallen over board then - he and someone else, yes, he remembered, the yell - the other person. ❝ Aw, fuck... ❞ None other than Izzy Hands lay before him, still unconscious, for now - this was going to be - interesting - His eyes moved over to the horizon, hoping for a sign that the Revenge and her crew - and Ed, was on their way - but no sign yet.

Rations had been low, again... Stede wasn't one to concern himself with those types of problems, he'd enough money to replace all that was needed for the crew and his survival, but it was constant, for the past couple of weeks now, things had been going missing. At first it was just food, then it was some materials, some finer things, a couple of his pillows, and now - Frenchie was running around the ship telling everyone that he'd seen a demon aboard. The crew were worried and so, in turn, that made Stede worried. They hatched a plan, set a trap for said demon and see what happened. Black Pete had boasted that he and Blackbeard used to set traps for people all the time, so the planning was left up to him. As night fell, the crew continued the 'normal' routine as best they could, trying their best to keep calm as they settled down for the night. As for Stede, he adorned his best dark jacket and found a hidden spot by the pile of food and pillows that black Pete had set up as the 'trap' and waited. An excited flurry in his stomach as he looked on, waiting to see if what Frenchie had reported was true, or if there was a more realistic explanation to all this. @ferineiisms
