My dad moved to the United States from India in his mid thirties. He was a cricket star on the national team and still holds records that are unbroken to this day. He was the first player to bowl 10 wickets at the first class level which is similar to pitching a perfect game in baseball. He gave up his life of comfort, success, easy money and fame to start at the bottom as a nobody in a foreign land to build his financial advisory business from scratch. He also played a big role in bringing the South Asian community together to make their voices heard when he contributed to the presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. He wanted to give my siblings and I an opportunity for a better life. He taught me integrity, modesty, work ethic, playfulness and to give back to the community. It’s a great practice to pause throughout the day amidst all the chaos going on around you and ambitious actions you are taking toward the achievement of your goals to remember how abundantly blessed you already are. I was watching Michael Jordan’s “Last Dance” documentary and Phil Jackson (MJ’s coach) said he instilled a mantra in the team, “You’re only a success at the moment you perform a successful act.” You gotta keep on rising up and elevating your game in life every single day. You’re either growing or dying. My coach told me, most people are stuck in the grey space of indecision in the middle - that’s the drift - you don’t want to be there because it feels safe but one day you realize the river of slowly life drifted you away from all of your dreams and desires without you even noticing. The distinction to remember is that you’re not doing this all to get and achieve more for yourself. That’s where you see the stories of people who seem to ‘have it all’ but are still unhappy because they are achieving to be happy. They are looking to the external world to fill up a bottomless void. Success isn’t what they are after - they are really after fulfillment. You’re doing it all to become more so you can give more to life. You happily achieve. You’re already there where you want to be internally and you can still go out and achieve and enjoy the external pleasures of life - you become one of those people who ‘effortlessly’ achieves things and manifests what they want.
