This needs further testing. But I think I discovered kind of a guide to draw different ages.
There's mainly two things going on. The outer quads represent the area of the face, and the inner square represents the area of the eyebrow-to-mouth-ratio (ETMR) including eyes and nose.
In the baby (1) both squads are flat. This is because the chin and the brow ridge are not prominent yet. Because of this, the outer and inner squad share their upper border only at this age. The eyes of a baby seem the largest. The head of a baby as a whole almost fits into a square/circle.
In the kid (2) the brow ridge and chin are growing, therefore the face and ETMR grow into a square. Nose and ears are bigger now, and the cranium has grown considerably, however, the tip of the nose is still above the lowest border of the cranium. The head as a whole starts to grow out of the basic square/circle of (1). When the face of the kid grows, it mainly grows downward and outward, while the cranium grows too.
The grown-up (3) keeps a square face squad, but the ETMR squad gets more high than wide (the head as a whole has also grown). The chin and brow ridges are now the most prominent and thus stretch the face and ETMR vertically. The eyes in the grown-up are less round.
In the old (4), the face and ETMR squad are getting flatter, like in the baby (1) again, but keep the width of (3). This is mainly because the bone of the chin is deteriorating significantly with age. Wrinkles and creases start to show single bone and muscle structures.
Also notice how the circle of the cranium, the brains vessel, changes it's size and position to the face mostly in the transition of the baby (1) to the kid (2).

I think supergranulating watercolours can be very useful to paint water. James Gurney uses to paint wet on wet with few colours as a start for water surfaces, as he explains in one of his videos.
Simply adding a layer with detailed reflections (sharp edges) on top of it could do the trick. Let's test this.
