Tortoise House Build, Part 3 (Parts 0, 1, and 2)

After assembling my new Tortoise House, it was time to seal the wood! My Tortoise House needs to be ⛈ weather-proof (it will be outside), 💦 waterproof (my substrate needs to be damp), and 💅 scratchproof (I am a master digger and climber!). Plus, Mom wanted to keep my Tortoise House light enough to move around. 🤔

The easiest option was a plastic liner, but my sharp nails would shred that in no time! 😏 After a lot of research on tortoise forums, Mom settled on spar urethane, a wood varnish that protects against rain, moisture, and sunlight. 👩‍💻 Spar urethane was originally developed for ships (hence the name!), so it is designed not to leach out when wet. To be doubly safe, Mom chose a food-safe one recommended for kitchen counters. ⛵️🍳

The last research step: I sat my whole shell on the can and GRUMPed my “seal” of approval! 😤🐢✅
