Okay well damn, now I'm in my feelings too. If that person doesn't mind me adding some thoughts: He hears through the grapevine that Captain Eames has finally retired. He's happy for her, and hopes she's sleeping in on weekday mornings and going on trips and drinking mimosas at brunch. He hopes he is the farthest thing from her mind and her worries. His book eventually gets published. He's in New York for something to do with it when a familiar face crosses his path.

You know, when I just had the first part in my inbox, I read it and a small scene of it being Bobby and Eames popped into my head and he got scared and started to duck her and walk away as fast as his long legs could carry him. But she had spotted him and all the years of keeping up with him and his impossibly long legs were not for nothing and she walks after him not letting him get away, until she gets fed up and yells after him, "I swear, I'm gonna tackle you. And then it's going to be awkward for both of us." Which does make him stop because that was her Captain Eames does not have time for your shit voice and also he has seen her take down guys bigger than him and it didn't end well for them. My imagination didn't go much further though.
And your version is just really good. Much better than what I came up with.
