Every month, you have to go to the Grocery Store to buy a month's worth of Food. Every three months or so you have to go to the Doctor's Office to talk to the Doctor and have them say "Yep, you still need Food," so you can go to the Grocery Store and buy Food.
One day, the Government says "Maybe too many people are getting Food. You have to have the Doctor's Office say you need Food every time you want to buy it now." So the next month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I need to buy Food", so the receptionist at the Doctor's Office says "Alright! I'll call the Grocery Store and tell them you can buy Food." So you go to the Grocery Store and buy Food. Every three months or so you still go and see the Doctor and they say "Yeah, you still need Food, so we'll keep telling the Grocery Store you need Food."
One month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Food, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy Food," and the receptionist says "Actually now you can go to the Grocery Store to buy Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" So you nod, that makes sense, and you go to the Grocery Store. You tell them you need Food, they ask if the Doctor has said you do, and you tell them what the Doctor's Office said. They say "We're not allowed to do that, sorry." So you go back to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Food, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy Food," and the receptionist says "Actually now you can go to the Grocery Store to buy Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" And you tell them "The Grocery Store said they can't do that." So the receptionist shakes their head, says "That's weird," and calls the Grocery Store so you can go buy food.
The next month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Food, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy Food," and the receptionist says again "Actually now you can go to the Grocery Store to buy Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" So you think "Maybe they fixed whatever went wrong last time," and you go to the Grocery Store. You tell them you need Food, they ask if the Doctor has said you do, and you tell them what the Doctor's Office said. They say again "We're not allowed to do that, sorry." So you go back to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Food, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy Food," and the receptionist says "Actually now you can go to the Grocery Store to buy Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" And you tell them "The Grocery Store said they can't do that." So the receptionist shakes their head, says "That's weird," and calls the Grocery Store so you can go buy food.
The next month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Concerta Food, please let the Pharmacy Grocery Store know I need to buy Medication Food," and the receptionist says for the fifth time "Actually now you can go to the Pharmacy Grocery Store to buy Concerta Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" This time, you just say "The Pharmacy Grocery Store has told me they're not allowed to do that." So the receptionist shakes their head, says "That's weird," and calls the Pharmacy Grocery Store so you can go buy Medication Food.
The next month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Food, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy Food," and the receptionist says once more "Actually now you can go to the Grocery Store to buy Food and they'll call us, and that'll make things easier for everyone!" So you think "Maybe they finally fixed it this time," and you go to the Grocery Store.
From then on, you just go to the Doctor's Office first and don't ask the Pharmacy anymore. Why waste time? You're still seeing the Doctor every three months for them to say "Yep, still need Medication."
Months pass, until one month, you go to the Doctor's Office and say "I'm running out of Medication, please let the Pharmacy know I need to buy Concerta," and the receptionist says "We can't do that, sorry. You need to either talk to the Doctor or have the Pharmacy call us." Your next appointment with the Doctor is two weeks away. You only have enough Medication for four days. You go to the Pharmacy. You tell them to ask the Doctor's Office to let you buy Your Medication. They say they can't. You go back. To the Doctor's Office. And you say "I'm running out of Concerta, please let the Grocery Store know I need to buy My Medication," and the receptionist says "We can't do that, sorry. You need to either talk to the Doctor or have the Pharmacy call us." Your next appointment with the Doctor is still two weeks away. You still only have enough Medication for four days. You tell them the Pharmacy can't call them. The Doctor's Office says "Well your next appointment is only two weeks away!" You can only buy enough Medication for a month at a time. You tell the receptionist you only have enough for four days. The receptionist says "Well, I hope the Doctor can fit you in!"
You think back. You barely remember when you could just go to the Doctor, then not have to worry about dealing with the Doctor's Office and the Pharmacy not working together. You wonder why the Government kept putting so many restrictions on Concerta when people like you need it to barely function like people without ADHD can do easily. You're tired. You're frustrated, and trying so, so hard not to snap at the Pharmacy and Doctor's Office workers because they didn't decide this. It's not their fault. They didn't want to be the bearers of the same bad news caused by idiots in charge not understanding what it's like. You have a naturally angry tone. You're upset. You're frustrated. You've needed this medication every month for years. You don't want to have to talk to the Doctor every month and waste their time for them to say a single sentence you both know will always be true; "Yes, you still need your medication."
Edit: my bad. Apparently this, like almost every other issue with resolving a medical problem in my life, is because of insurance companies making a profit off of being morally corrupt failures of humanity.
