It had been exactly ELEVEN DAYS AND THIRTEEN HOURS since Phoenix had left his comfortable apartment in LA and gone on the road. Why ? Well, he had “ got a restless spell ” as Sinatra put it so eloquently, plus his movie-star dad was up to his old antics again, and Phoenix simply had no interest in dealing with all that. That’s the story of him ending up in a diner in the small town of St. Helena. His next destination ? Hmm. Phoenix turned the page in his journal and kept on scribbling. After a couple of minutes, he was distracted by a man practically shouting his lungs out at someone. He turned around to see who the recipient of the man’s foul words was. A young girl who he assumed was a waitress, and the guy was her boss ? her boyfriend ? “ Excuse me ” he called out to the waitress, raising his hand. He just wanted a coffee refill, but none of them seemed to hear him. “ ‘Scuse me, hello ! ” he called out louder, his gaze fixed on the yelling man.

the gig had been amazing, sage always loved playing to a large crowd. music was her first love, her passion, it made her so happy that she could share it with people. once the gig was over and the fans had trickled away from the stage door, she headed back onto the stage, drumsticks in hand. sage made her way across the stage, stopping to look at some of the posters that had been thrown onto it, she couldn’t help but smile. she sat on the edge of the stage, looking out towards were the crowd would’ve been. it felt strange being here and it was so empty, but she’d always been curious to see it. she was having a quiet moment, thinking back to the show and how great it had been, when she heard a voice. it causes her to turn and when she sees mickey, a big smile comes across her lips. “hey” she says back to him, twiddling with her drumsticks, “i dunno. i just wanted to see what it looked like, empty. ya’know?” she shrugs her shoulders, watching as he sat down next to her. a laugh leaves her lips at his comment, she’d seen some of the signs too, she thought it was cute, she’d always had a thing for mickey, but her music came first and that was that. “yeah. i saw some of those, dunno what made ‘em think that though” she muses, then she notices his face, “it’s not a bad thing though, is it, kinda sweet?”. 

mickey takes a long drag and exhales slowly, nodding. “ yeah, you know bruce actually suggested that we ‘DATE’ ” he remarks, making air quotes as he speaks the last word. bruce, their manager, had suggested that they use the fans’ “enthusiasm about them” — as he put it — for the band’s benefit. NOW, mickey and sage went way back, and mickey did love her so he didn’t want to do something that would damage their friendship. but what was an occasional “fake kiss” or “fake embrace” between friends ? he was sure that it wouldn’t cause any problems between them and it could potentially benefit them, so he was on board with the idea. “ he said that it would be a good publicity stunt for the band, but you know ” he shrugs, turning his head to face sage, trying to figure out if she was okay with the idea as well. “ i don’t know ”.

He shrugged when she asked how. “I don’t know. Marriage counseling. Couples therapy?” He said softly. “There is a point in discussing it. Maybe I’m not ready to sign papers. I’m not ready to give up on this. We literally have so much time to grow and fix things. I don’t want to be kicked out of Mila’s life.” The last sentence caught in his throat, as it was truly the fear he held. He didn’t want Mila to have to grow up with divorced parents. “We fell in love once, we can’t just.. ignore that. What do you want  me to do.. I’ll do it all.”

A knot formed in Livia’s throat when he mentioned Mila. Here she was, afraid that he would run out on Mila when in reality being cut off from her really did seem to scare him. A part of her wanted things to go back to the way they were —you know, for Mila’s sake— but she couldn’t just forgive Axel as well. Livia took a deep sigh. She had been resolute in her decision to divorce him when she had entered that diner. She had imagined that they would just sign the papers and part ways. And it would be over. But now, Livia was just CONFUSED. “ I mean Mila was asking about you last night, so I guess you can come home just for tonight ” she said, giving a shrug, one eyebrow lifted cautiously. “ that doesn’t mean that I’ve changed my decision though...just so you know ”. 

Living on the pay she made as a relatively unknown writer proved to be extremely difficult, and she’d picked up a waitress job to make some extra money. But the job was not going as she’d thought it would. She’d expected it to be easy, which the work was—but with her boss breathing down her neck, yelling at her, it made the job hell. “Can you give me a minute? You literally just gave me a different instruction,” she shot back to her boss, hissing the words so that the patrons wouldn’t take too much notice to her–not one for letting people push her around. But her tone was bordering on soft and tense because the last thing she needed right now was to be fired for back-talking to her boss. Isadora finally heard the customer and went to them promptly, as the boss continued to yell at her, near belligerent now. The fact that she kept her composure was incredible, but the look in her eyes was furious, pained. She was relieved when her boss put his hands up in disgust and defeat and walked to the back room. “I’m so sorry,” Isadora said to the male. “How are things going over here? Can I get you anything?”

Phoenix watched closely as the belligerent man went into the other room, sending death stares his way until he disappeared. He had no patience for rude & controlling people since he had grown up in an environment where his every move was controlled and judged. Well, his situation was much different than the waitress’ given that his parents’ publicists and assistants were never physically or verbally abusive with him ( like this guy was ) but they had manipulated & tried to control him nevertheless. and for a decade as well. “ Yeah, I uh – I was going to ask for a refill ? ” he said absent-mindedly, his eyes still fixed at the door where the guy had disappeared. He turned his head to actually look at the waitress’ face for the first time when she approached his table with a coffee pitcher in her hand. “ why do you put up with that dickhead ? ” he blurted out, immediately regretting his choice of words.

“crashing dolls!!!” mickey smiled as he read the poster on the ground. he had a habit of walking around the concert venue after a show was over. he would search for the weirdest thing left by a fan —and they never disappointed him — and keep it as a souvenir. now, he wasn’t known to be a “sentimental guy”, so he kept this activity of his to himself. “i <3 crashing dolls” mickey tilted his head up and admired the huge venue for a second or two. we’ve really made it, haven’t we? “marry me mickey” he scoffed as he kept walking. Aha! There was a dildo shaped coat button laying on the ground by his feet. Weird enough. he thought as he knelt down to pick it up. While he placed the button in his pocket, he noticed A FIGURE sitting on the edge of the stage. It’s her. “ Hey ! ” he called out as he slowly made his way towards her. “ What are you doing here ? ” he hopped up onto the stage and sat down beside her. “ I think the fans think we’re fucking dating or something. I saw countless people holding up signs with our names on it ” he lit a cigarette and inhaled the smoke. “ with hearts and shit ” he made a hand gesture as a wince spread through his face. @aniimalspirits​

Axel could not believe this was all happening now. All because he had been caught on a ‘business trip’ which of course he regretted. Leaving from work,  he made his way to the diner, almost tempted to skip out. It was still hard for him to look her in the eye after what he had done. “Livia..” He said as he walked up to her table. When she stood up he saw her arms move to hug him, but frowned as they snapped back to her sides. He wanted to hug her, to take her back to their home, to see his daughter. Sitting across from her he leaned in and his gruff voice spoke, putting his hand on the folder. “We don’t need to do this, you know..” He said softly, “Let me come home, please… I can fix things.”

Livia rolled her eyes and leaned back in her chair. As much as she wanted to believe Axel, she couldn’t. She had heard the same words so many times. And she had caved in, at every turn. But NO, this time she had to stand her ground. For herself and her daughter. She did still love him in a way, but she couldn’t forgive him for what he had done. “ And how exactly ? ” she inquired, breaking her silence. She took a deep sigh and leaned in. “ Look Axel, honestly...there’s no point in discussing this again. I think it’s best if you and I just sign these papers ” she placed her fingers on the edge of the folder “ and move on with our lives. ” a hint of sadness lacing her tone.
