This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.
kinda debunks that claim that they can’t afford to pay their workers those sort of wages and still make a profit
Its corporate greed, plain and simple.
It is the same in Sweden. It is so funny every time an american company opens up offices here and then tries to do it the american way and all the unions go “I don’t think so”.
Like when Toys ‘r Us opened in sweden 1995.
They refused to sign on to the union deals that govern such things as pay/pension and vacation in Sweden. Most of our rights are not mandated by law (we don’t have a minimum wage for example) but are made in voluntary agreements between the unions and the companies.
But they refused, saying that they had never negotiated with any unions anywhere else in the world and weren’t planning to do it in Sweden either.
Of course a lot of people thought it was useless fighting against an international giant, but Handels (the store worker’s union) said that they could not budge, because that might mean that the whole Swedish model might crumble. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far.
Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US.
In the end, Toys ‘r Us caved in, signed the union deal, and thus their employees got the same treatment as Swedish store workers everywhere.
The right to be treated as bloody human beings and not disposable cogs in a machine.
and that story right there? is exactly why Republicans in the US work so hard to bust unions. it’s because unionizing WORKS and they’re terrified of workers actually having some power.
In addition to helping create an expansive product vision, UX skills can directly support the types of technological innovation that have tended to drive those historical trends: 1) Facilitating automation 2) Making a solution applicable to many domains 3) Adapting a solution from one domain to a remotely related one 4) Integrating technologies that seemed distinct 5) Solving problems elegantly (in the mathematical sense of parsimonious) 6) Creating infrastructural products that are broadly applicable to a wide range of value propositions and technologies.

New iOS 10 update appears to provide great AT features for both gestures and speech! Definitely “eating away” lots of traditional features that are embedded in AAC applications that are costly and not exactly user friendly.
Designing information visualizations offers you endless possibilities when it comes to end products and it would be impossible to provide step-by-step instructions for all these possibilities. However, it is fair to say that while the end products may vary dramatically – the process by which we reach the best possible end product is consistently the same.Author/Copyright holder: Kitware Inc. THE IVY LEE METHOD 1) At the end of each workday, write down the six most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down more than six tasks. 2) Prioritize those six items in order of their true importance. 3) When you arrive tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task. 4) Approach the rest of your list in the same fashion. At the end of the day, move any unfinished items to a new list of six tasks for the following day. 5) Repeat this process every working day.

I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when I was three and with autism when I was fourteen. This was before the DSM-5 came out and merged it into ASD. All my life people have tried to fix me and turn me into something I’m not.
Therapists told me that no one wanted to hear what I had to say. People have told me that my movements are wrong. I’ve been bullied, both by other children and by therapists.
Fingers have tried to form me like clay, but they’ve never succeeded.
I am disabled. At times I struggle with speaking with my mouth, but that doesn’t mean I’m not speaking.
Autism is speaking. Autism is right here, telling you that I’m not broken. Autism needs acceptance. Awareness doesn’t cover acceptance or understanding.
For autism awareness month, speak to autistic people about their experiences. Listen to us and ask as many questions as you need to have answered.
I am autistic. I am beautiful. Do not pity me.

Quora words of wisdom for 20 somethings
These two stood out to me especially:
1) Choose a career that has meaning. Nursing, scientific research, or environmental activism, for example. You will spend a lot of your life at work and come to understand what "the grind" is. After giving all your vitality and energy to your job, you want something back. Money goes to pay the bills, so all that's left is the sense that you are doing something good for the world. That can't happen in some professions, so choose carefully. 2) In a few years, your relationship with your parents will change. You will see them as people instead of authority figures. You will see their faults more clearly and see how those faults affected you. Don't let your parents manipulate you. You owe them kindness and consideration, but not your soul.

This needs more notes. 37k is not enough
this is a post that deserves to be broken. One day I would like nothing more than too see this has too many notes.
People are still good. For some reason the negativity is all we pay attention to, but there are still good things happening in the world. We just need to be reminded of that once in a while.
