I mean, I’m not a huge fan of her because I do think she’s made mistakes with storylines in the past. I do think it is a bit much to call her a lesbophobe though. Words have meanings. I simply don’t believe Julie is a bigot. Very straightforward to me.Â
I’m not gaining anything out of defending her other than trying to reason with people jumping to these kinds of conclusions. On Tumblr people throw around accusations like the wild. I don’t agree with a lot of them, and calling Julie a lesbophobe, although it is a very popular opinion to share on tumblr.com, is not something I stand for.
I’m just wondering, would you also call Julie a transphobe for not including transgender, gender fluid, or non-binary people on the show? What about ableist, since she hasn’t included people with physical disabilities? I don’t see people talking about that for some reason, and I wonder why.
I looked through your link and watched that YouTube video a while ago. It’s all stuff I’ve seen in the past which I don’t agree with. One thing I do believe is that Julie queerbaited with Vilde’s, “I feel things while kissing Eva [while I didn’t with William].” Although that doesn’t mean I think Vilde is a lesbian canonically. It definitely seems like she likes Magnus, although they’re a bit extra about it.
However, Nooreva didn’t seem like queer baiting to me. Would it have been a perfect set up for a wlw storyline? Oh, definitely, and I totally ship them. But I also act that way with my friends in real life. It doesn’t mean there’s anything implicit about my relationships with them. (I actually find that survey linked really interesting! Although, the pool of people being surveyed was obviously something that influenced results but wasn’t touched upon, lol.)
I’ve also talked about this a lot in the past in my fandom discourse tag, if you want to listen to a wlw’s opinion on why I don’t think Julie is a lesbian. Obviously my opinion doesn’t need to be universal, but I think these kinds of discussions are important. It just doesn’t seem to me like it’s something that is lesbophobic (or even microaggressive).
I think Shay being involved in Skam Austin is really exciting, and I have hope that Julie will do her justice considering the amount of research she does pertaining to the teen issues she touches on the show. I have hope that she does it well and sensitively. Do I think she’s an ally? Well, she’s definitely trying to be one. And open to education, too. I hope she betters herself and succeeds, to be honest.
