I usually try not to add my analysis’ to my artwork posts, but I have have so many thoughts on this gal. Here’s some of them:

Obviously, I’m a Jasper fan. I liked her character long before I started watching the show- I saw Gem Hunt randomly one day years ago, and just found her character very interesting, even though I understood NOTHING about the show.

Now I’m not going to act as if Jasper hasn’t done anything wrong. Because she has. She’s a bully. She has tried to manipulate people, and uses excessive force even in non hostile situations.

But she also has a lot of issues. She’s the perfect Quartz soldier. Except she’s not. Earth is implied to be the only failed colony in existence. The Beta kindergarten is implied to be the worst kindergarten in existence. She’s the best Quartz from the worst kindergarten of the worst colony.

It’s been confirmed that her character has a lot of self loathing. It may of been hard to see it at first, because she saw herself as above all the Crystal Gems. Especially Amethyst, another Quartz. One she can easily put herself above since Amethyst is an ‘overcooked runt’.

So she used the Crystal Gems as a sort of outlet to help fuel her ego. To make herself feel better about being herself, by putting down the other gems around her.

With Lapis, I believe everything that happened with Malachite was traumatic for both of them. We see Lapis’ trauma explored more in the show, so I won’t talk about it much. But Jasper was in the wrong for trying to manipulate Lapis into fusing to defeat the CGs, but Lapis was also in the wrong for trapping Jasper like that (she’s powerful enough to dissipate Jasper, so I personally view the months Malachite was under the sea as not 100% justified).

Jasper felt more powerful as Malachite, and also I’ve seen fans explore her having developed Stockholm’s syndrome as well. But I feel Malachite boosted her self worth while she was Malachite, despite the situation, but it would of also dragged her self worth down afterwards. Since she was no longer part of a powerful fusion, but again just her, a quartz from a defective planet, and a destroyed diamond.

Fusion was a repetitive low point for her. Losing herself to Malachite, and losing battle after battle to Garnet, Stevonnie, Smokey. If they kept fusing to beat her, she should fuse to beat them. But again, she chooses the wrong gem to fuse with. But this time, instead of being dragged to the bottom of the ocean and controlled/abused for months, she lost her form and mind to corruption.

After being healed, she may of felt like her physical form reflects what she is: not perfect. But now she can’t hide it. Now she has scars as a constant reminder of her mistakes, scars that others can see. Others can see that she’s not perfect. And it’s her own fault.

But she’s self destructive. Not necessarily self aware. She doesn’t want to accept that she has emotional problems. She can’t deny she has scars, but she can deny that she’s not okay.

She views her anger issues as power. As the only thing she has left.

Her diamond created her. She owes her existence to her Diamond. All she’s wanted to do was serve her diamond, and the authority.

But her Diamond faked her own shattering so that she can fight against homeworld. She spent thousands of years hating Rose Quartz. After everything I mentioned above, is when she finds out that the shattering was faked, and that the gem she spent thousands of years hating, was the gem she lived to serve.

And all she’s left behind is a half organic watered down version of herself, who isn’t even her. And jasper refuses to accept Stevens help, or to accept him as a diamond. Which is easy. It’s easy to hate someone. It’s easy to be angry.

FRAGMENTS + HOMEWORLD BOUND SPOILERS:

She then finds a neutral ground with Steven, in the form of ‘training’. This is a negative coping mechanism for both of them. Jasper is a negative influence for Steven in this instance, and they’re both too self destructive at the moment to see this.

But this leads to Steven losing control of all the morals he holds onto, completely giving in to his power and anger like jasper tends to. And during this episode/ display of power, Jasper being shattered.

While she hates herself, even she has to admit that she’s powerful and it’s hard to dissipate her, let alone shatter her. This is what causes her to recognise Steven as her diamond (much to his dismay), and she finds herself respecting him because of his strength.

She would of thought this would make everything okay again. Finally she had someone to serve again. What is a soldier without war? Without her commanders?

But he tells her to find something better to do with her life. To not follow him, to not serve him.

First her Diamond was shattered and she was assigned to another Diamond, who she willingly served. The authority was dismantled. Then she finds out her first diamond wasn’t shattered, but faked it, and hated everything Jasper lived for.

As quickly as she thought she had it back, her purpose was ripped from her again.

She needs a purpose. She craves it. When she has a purpose, someone to serve, she doesn’t have to think about herself. She doesn’t have to take her feelings into consideration. She doesn’t have to admit she has problems or lacks substance in her life.

But she doesn’t have that stability to fall back on. Thinking she had it back and to have it taken away, broke her heart.

She forced herself to fit the shape the authority provided, and now that that’s gone, she’s lost all sense of purpose, and who she was. Like how Ruby talked about how she’d never had time to think about herself since she’d been bunched with her Ruby squad and then guarding/ fused with Sapphire the whole time.

Except Jasper doesn’t want to go on a journey of self discovery. She just wants her old life back. To have a purpose. To serve someone.

Starting at 10am ET today a key congressional committee will vote on the Save the Internet Act – the best bill we have to restore net neutrality.

Unfortunately Big Telecom shills on the House subcommittee voting today have already proposed dangerous amendments that could completely gut the bill or leave gaping loopholes for Internet providers to block, throttle, and charge Internet users new fees for access.

To get a clean bill that restores net neutrality passed need to show them the WHOLE INTERNET IS WATCHING.

that’s not me saying that’s a good thing - i just think it’s realistic for her character. good writing, if you will. we already saw the seeds of this in “change your mind”. 

she was ready to fight, but once she sensed that the diamonds were not… she shut up. she forced herself to sit still and be quiet.

We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.
