i got accepted into international after having applied for the past 3 years :) but i was wondering what are some things that should be known, like what is life like on tour?
First of all congrats! Second tour is amazing and an incredible experience! You’ll have an intensive week in June where you’ll rehearse and at the end of the week you head off to Europe. You stay with host families which is an amazing experience where you bond worth them and get to see normal day to day life in another culture. You will perform in incredible venues and your audience will love you. At the end of the day you will create some amazing memories with some life long friends and perform and your at a near professional level. I hope you decide to go and have an amazing tour! Hello everyone! I decided to make a Blue Lake advice kind of series on this blog for any new people to camp and even some returning campers to just get in the spirit of blue lake and help each other out.
If anyone has a question or is just nervous about camp please feel free to submit it to me through this link or this one.
For this weeks advice I’ll start with making friends at camp. A lot of people are nervous about making friends at camp, I know I was, but after several years of practice I am no longer scared and I’ll talk about the advice I have for ya’ll.
Walking into camp alone can be really overwhelming. When I first arrived at Blue Lake it was a lot to take in. The moment our blue mini van rounded the corner to the big gravel driveway my heart raced. People were walking all over the place carrying suitcases and instruments. Some were reuniting with old friends in warm hugs while their parents rushed them along to their cabins. It was a big vision for my anxiety ridden self to take in. Flash forward 12 days, I was the last one in my cabin, waiting for my parents to pick me up and sign me out. My cabin counselor was playing music and a song came on that I loved, I heard the chords ringing through my ears and I sung out loud. My parents walked in at that moment and my counselor turns to them and says, “She had a great time, she really came out of her shell.” and that made me smile all the way home. The bottom line is just be yourself at blue lake and talk to people. When you get into your cabin say hi to your cabin mates, they will become your best friends. When you get put into your auditioned group, get to know your section and your group. Talk to people even if small talk is not your strong point. My first time at camp I literally turned to someone and said “It’s so hot.” and they responded and we became best friends.
The point I am trying to make is to come out of your comfort zone and just live in the moment at camp.
Hey guys! Hope everything is going well as you all prepare for the upcoming sessions! I’m starting to gather all my things together for session 2 and I am starting to get really excited. This year I want to take more pictures and videos at camp so I can make a video about it and maybe post it on here. Would you guys like to see that? I think it would be fun to make and a good way to reflect upon my time at camp and also what camp is like as a whole. Let me know what you guys think.

Anyway, I am here to do a very late packing list for Blue Lake 2019. Session one started today and I’m hoping everyone will have a good time. Clothes
Blue Lake Polos (3-4) <-- I recommend 4
Blue Lake Sweater (1)
*Knee Highs (1-2 Pairs) <-- I recommend 2, and buying them from blue lake directly because they are super comfortable
Blue Lake Sweatshirt (1-2) <-- I personally bring 2 if there's enough room in my suitcase because I love sweatshirts and if it gets cold and rainy you’re going to want an extra, but you don’t need more than 1.
*Skirt (1-2) <-- Check blue lake’s website for specific guidelines
Shorts (3-4 Pairs) <-- I recommend 4
Jeans/Long Pants (1-2 Pairs) <-- I personally recommend 2 pairs
^Dress Pants (1-2) <-- Same recommendations as the skirts for girls
Close Toed Shoes (1-2 pairs) <-- I personally bring a pair of converse high tops and old combat boots to keep out the sand and keep my feet comfortable. You don’t need 2 pairs by any means, It’s just a personal preference for me.
Underwear (Enough for all of camp plus extras, seriously no one wants to have to wear dirty underwear)
White Socks (Enough for all of camp plus extras)
*Bras (Enough for all of camp) <-- Ladies please bring all you need, my recommendation is sports bras.
Out of Uniform Shirts and Pants (1-3) <-- Bring some. Seriously, when you get downtime to yourself you’ll want something more lightweight than those polos.
Pajamas <-- I personally bring a tank top and short sleeve t-shirt along with sweatpants and cloth shorts because the evenings can be hot but the nights can get cold.
Bathing Suit (If you intend on swimming in the pool)
Toiletries
Shampoo
Conditioner
Body Wash/Soap
Face Wash
Toothbrush, Toothpaste, and Floss
Deodorant <-- No one will forgive you if you show up without this and stink up the cabins
Razor for Shaving Needs
*Pads/Tampons/Menstrual Products <-- Girls please bring these even if you’re not supposed to be on your period. You never know what might happen.
Towel (1-2) <-- I highly HIGHLY recommend bringing two in case one isn’t dry the next time you want to take a shower.
Flip Flops/Slides <-- You’re gonna want these for the showers, walking back and forth from the bathroom to your cabin, and maybe walking around your cabin.
Any Additional Toiletries You May Need

Small Foam Pad <-- Completely optional, I’ve never brought one however, I know some people who are more comfortable with an extra soft layer on their bed.
IN REGARDS TO BEDDING:
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND PLACING YOUR BOTTOM SHEET DOWN, LAYING YOUR SLEEPING BAG ON TOP, AND THEN PLACING YOUR EXTRA BLANKET ON TOP DURING THE DAY TO AVOID GETTING SAND AND DIRT IN YOUR BED.

Watch <-- Don’t step foot on the campus without a watch. You will be responsible for getting to your classes and meals on time.
Instrument and Music Stand/Whatever You Need For Your Major or Minor
Raincoat/Umbrella/Poncho
Bugspray <-- No one wants to spend their camp experience scratching at bug bites.
Sunscreen <-- If you burn as easily as I do you will take the advice that there is a lot of sun.
Flashlight w/ Extra Batteries
Case of Bottled Water <-- I personally highly HIGHLY recommend this one. The water tastes like eggs and if that bothers you, you might want to invest in a case of water to avoid dehydrating yourself.
Reusable Water Bottle <-- Hydrate or Diedrate Kids
Notebook/Pencils/Pens <-- During down time these things are nice
Stationary/Letters/Envelops/Stamps <-- Sending a receiving letters is one of the best things at camp, it’s like contact from the outside world just makes your day while in the wilderness.
Chapstick <-- Don’t be that one person with dry lips
Cough Drops <-- ATTENTION ALL CHOIR MAJORS, your throat WILL hurt halfway through the session and it sucks having to go to the UD Hutt for one. Just keep it low key.
Battery Powered Fan!!!!
Camera <-- I really recommend this one. Take pictures, videos, anything to remember your time with these amazing people in this amazing place.

In your opinion, what type of shoes are the best to bring that keep most, if not all, of the sand out?
I think that tennis shoes are always a good idea, however I have found that converse high tops work pretty well. I have heard from some friends that things such as old combat boots work very well for keeping the sad out. The bottom line is wear something that is comfortable for walking for you. Sometimes you can’t keep the sand from invading your shoes :)
Hello everybody! I apologize for not being active about the start of session one and two, I just got back from Europe not even two days ago so I’ve been busy and then jet lagged but I hope I can be active now for the rest of the summer. If you went to session one how was it? The International Band had an amazing time in Europe and I can’t wait to share some pictures with you guys. If anyone has pictures from session one they would like to send me I can post them on here. Also, I will be playing a homecoming concert on July 27 at Blue Lake which is during session three so feel free to say hi if you see me. Finally, if anyone from session one has any stories they want to share just send me a message and I’ll post it. I love seeing your guises questions so keep them coming!
What are the limits for electronic items you can bring to camp? Like I know no phones obviously but I was wondering about more internet free objects, like Nooks, video cameras, and MP3 players and the like? I’ve heard before that as long as it can’t connect to the internet without WiFi it should be fine but are there any limitations I’m missing?
You can use any electronic that doesn’t connect to a cell tower in your unit during rec time or at night before lights out. You can use a camera during the day for pictures but if it looks like a phone then counselors are probably going to take it away. You have the general rules and guidelines already so you’ll be fine. Hi! First of all, you’re going to love camp. Second, don’t stress about your friend going a different session. I have found that it’s much more fun to go without a friends because hat way you can meet more people and better friends because you’re not just hanging out with the same person everyday because you know them. Branch out of your comfort zone and have fun! Get to know your cabin mates, they will be there for you the entire session and you will have some amazing friends. Other than that just have fun. hey there! im a first time camper this year at session one, and my minor is harp. im a tad bit nervous, as i read somewhere that there is a recital for the harp players. does this apply to those who do it as a minor too? and is it individual? and lastly, is it in front of everyone? sorry this was a lot of questions, but im just kinda concerned aha. thanks !!
Hello! First of all that’s awesome that your minor is harp, and second I wouldn’t be worried at all. I have never done the harp minor but from what I’ve heard and my knowledge of classes at camp is that it will be a small recital for parents on final Sunday. I’m not sure if it’s individual or not but my guess would be no (although I’ve never taken it so I’m not 100% sure) In general, Blue Lake tends to not put students on the spot for individual things. Hey guys! The 2018 summer season is coming up so fast and I thought I’d put up a new packing list. I made one last year and you can find it here
Clothes
3-4 Blue Lake Polos (I like to have 4 to be safe but you can get by with 3)
3-4 Pairs of in uniform shorts (these are dark blue ~darker than the polos~ that aren’t super short. Just a heads up, you won’t want short shorts because your legs will stick to the chairs at rehersal sites)
1-2 Pairs of jeans (dark blue ~darker than polos~ look at the weather before picking and plan out shorts and jeans before hand but keep in mind the weather changes frequently so be prepared for anything!)
1 or 2 out of uniform tops and shorts (don’t bring a bunch but a few is nice for in unit and cabin activities as well as carnival for sessions 3 and 4)
White Socks (Bring enough pairs for everyday plus a few extra -you can never have enough socks okay-)
Underwear (Again, enough for all of camp plus extra.)
Bras (Girls)
Blue Lake Uniform Sweater
Formal uniform pants or skirt (Look on Blue Lake Access for additional information)
Formal uniform knee high socks (girls only -check Blue Lake Access for additional information-)

Substantial shoes (Tennis shoes or converse are great! Bring shoes that are comfortable to be in all day and walk from one end of camp to the other)

Pads/Tampons (Obviously only for girls. Bring these even if your not supposed to start, trust me. You’re around so many people so your cycle will most likely get thrown off so bring some whether you think you’re going to start or not.
2 Towels (Bring one for sure for showers. I recommend bringing two if you can because it may rain and/or be extremely humid and your first towel might not dry.)
Shower Cady
Flip-flops (Trust me, you’re gonna want these for the showers, walking too and from the bathroom in unit, and in the cabin because sand usually gets tracked in.)
Laundry soap (Only if you plan on washing socks and underwear because the counselors will not wash them.)
Bedding
Sleeping Bag
Sheets
Extra Blanket (I like to bring one because it can get cold at night and it’s very effective to keep sand out of your bed.)
Pillow and Case
Small memory or foam pad (Completely optional, I've gone for several years and never taken one but the beds are thin and hard so it’s something to consider but it’s not necessary.)
Other
Watch (I can not stress how important this is, just trust me and get yourself a watch.)
Rain Coat and/or umbrella/poncho (Trust me on this one. Even if it says it won’t rain while you will be at camp bring this no matter what. The weather changed rapidly and without warning, be prepared!)
Bugspray (You’re in the middle of the woods and there will be bugs so again, be prepared)
Sunscreen (Some people don’t need this but I recommend bringing it because if you’re like me and burn super easily then you’ll want it for those sunny days.)

Music Stand (Band and Orchestra - This is really important for tech class and sectionals)

Case of Water (Again, trust me on this one. The water at camp tastes like eggs a lot because it is by the lake so it’s nice to have a case of bottled water. I’d like to point out this is not a necessity -they have water at camp and places to refill water bottles- but I recommend it)
Water bottle (Really important unless you want to be at the mercy of the heat and get dehydrated. Stay Hydrated!)
Notebook w/ letters, envelopes, and stamps (At night you’ll have flashlight time to write letters to your family. Also, having a notebook to doodle or draw is nice. For example I write songs and I always get really inspired while at blue lake because of the atmosphere and all the talent so at night I like to jot down lyrics in an old notebook.)
Pencils, pencils, PeNciLS, PENCILS (This is SO important. Directors will expect you to have a pencil with you in rehearsal so just be prepared, a pen is also nice for letters and such.)
Chapstick (This one is really important especially for band and orchestra students and especially brass but I recommend it for everyone
Cough Drops (Bring a few especially if you’re a choir major because I have heard from multiple people that halfway through the session your throat feels pretty rough. Also, if someone in your cabin gets sick you may get a light cold because you’re living in such a close space so just bring a few in case.)
Battery Powered Fan
Camera (Not anything super expensive, just enough to capture some memories.)

Hey everyone, I’m sorry I haven’t posted in quite a while. Summer was a whirlwind and then school started and everything. I just wanted to say that with all this net neutrality stuff going on, if net neutrality is done away with I probably won’t be able to keep this account up. If that is the case I’d like someone else to run it if they can, so if anyone’s interested please message me.
Also, while I’m here, I am not attending Blue Lake this coming summer. Instead, I’m getting the opportunity to travel to Europe with the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. If I’m able to keep running this account I will of course post stuff about camp, but in addition to that I will share stuff about Blue Lake International.
