"It was a fair summer afternoon. The sky was a shade so blue so bright that it almost hurt to look at and there wasn't a cloud in sight. Mike and Will...."

(I'm not a writer btw so excuse me if it sounds silly, it's supposed to hehe)

@itsthe-forme (who somehow had the exact same idea which is funny as fuck, the Byler hive mind strikes again😭)

...sat in the field, shoulders just barely touching. Now that they had a break from the burden that was endless lectures and assignments they could finally relax. College had them both a little burnt out but they were at least happy to be able to spend as much time with each other as they could, being roommates and all. Will...

…was painting the meadow in front of him, filling his sketchbook with bright yellow daisies, snow-coloured lilies, and azure orchids. The sun was intense and it was burning his eyes. He rubbed his eyes with his palms, not knowing of just how much paint he smeared onto his face. Mike lifted his head up from his journal to look at Will and a smile spread across his face. He traced Will’s face from his bright pink cheeks to his hazel eyes upto his umber hair, glowing golden in the sunlight.

"Hey, Will?" Mike said softly. Will looked up at him expectedly, already blushing slightly as if Mike's staring these past few minutes had, in fact, not gone unnoticed. "You've got a little something there, around your eyes", Mike continued while gesturing at his own face.

"Do I?" Will frowned and pursed his lips, wearing an annoyed expression as he reached up to wipe at his face with his hand. "I seriously never learn to not get paint all over myself when I paint. It's so bad, I don't know why it keeps happening."

"Yeah, well, smearing even more of it all over yourself won't exactly help your case", Mike said warmly, an odd sense of affection overcoming him at the sight of Will's troubled pout. "Here, let me help you", he added after a short moment, reaching out to push Will's hair out of his face and somehow not noticing the way the way the other boy's eyes quickly darted towards the open journal in his lap. "Just sit still, okay?"

…Will froze up, body locking despite the comfort that the sun brought. The contact that came with Mike’s bare thumb across his upper cheekbone made him melt, soft and demanding of more. Will wasn’t even sure the stubborn stain left his face at all, too focused on the glide of Mike’s hand on his face. It felt too intimate to be real, but just enough to relish in it. He let himself bathe in the touch, for once.

a few days later, nancy finally informs everyone on what happened. mike got into an accident and is now suffering from a head injury, having lost a good chunk of his memory. nancy says he’s okay, but she wont say what the accident was or a lot of the details. and only mike’s immediate family knows the full story

will, despite not having seen mike in years sans occasional party reunions, goes to see him in the hospital with max. surprised when mike recognizes them both, but mainly will. he’s strangely… bubbly. smiley and sweet in a way he never is

mike gets out of the hospital and it becomes apparent that wasn’t because of the painkillers. he just… acts like that now. he’s so unapologetically happy and smiley that will(and everyone else who has known him for the past few years) has whiplash

but it pulls will in again, as things always do with mike wheeler. something drags will back into orbit

one of the days hes talking to mike, will asks him what he remembers. so mike tells him

he remembers his childhood, his life, his friends, his classes. chunks grow blurry during middle school and afterwards. and he can tell something is missing but it feels.. too scary to find. the things he can remember about the blurry times make him shiver all over the place— a sound of a monster in his ear, bone aching cold paired with the sound of a siren, the smell of rotten flesh, gunshots and pizza, dust and yellow skies and a huge monster

will listens to mike explain everything, able to correlate every vague memory to an event, save a few. he can tell mike is happier like this. he wonders if the memory loss was permanent, and briefly, both selfishly and selflessly, he hopes it is

it is. they get the diagnosis a few weeks later

mike doesn’t mind. when he asks about things, nancy tells him. when he wants to know more about what happened in his vague memories, he knows he has the ability to know. he just doesnt want to. the more he learns about his life before, the more hes sure. he knew he was miserable and now hes not. honestly, it felt like a relief

will and him get closer again, and hes happier than ever. he asks about any gaps in their lives together and will tells him. mike doesnt understand why it makes him feel bittersweet. he chases after will and gets the boy. he keeps asking questions

and one day he tells will about another vague memory, about the roof of a building and the sight of his feet— though it didnt seem like his feet, they had to be his— dangling off the edge. cutting through the wind on the way down. he tells will that he doesnt feel that way anymore. he doesnt know why he ever did, and he wont ever know now. and will cries and he holds mike closer than ever before

and one day he talks to dustin and jane about the cliff and asks them all about it. dustin cries and mike hugs him tight. jane says he seems much more mike without any baggage
