Mike wheeler who is living with Will Byers in college. Who thought he could handle his feelings for his best friend, because heās done it for years now, whatās a few more? But they live in the same small apartment, with a shared bathroom and everything heās ever felt for Will Byers is hitting him tenfold.
And so he has to tell him. Because he doesnāt want to keep lying to him, but he also doesnāt want to lose his best friend, but if he doesnāt tell him now, he fears heād do something stupid and it would make the situation worse.
But of course, in true Mike Wheeler fashion, he tells Will on the night when the party are having a group meet up. And everything gets blown out of proportion because Will gets angry, the same desperate anger he saw in Rinko-Mania. And Mike, Mike doesnāt understand, because Will is yelling about how he finally got over him, and so why is he mad?
But he doesnāt understand the fact that Will had lived with the same guilt he has for all those years, the same fear, but he was the one to voice it first and he was the one who chose to be free and be purely himself. And now he finally felt he was free of the grasp of Mike Wheeler and he could ignore the feeling that grows every-so-often when they share those breif moments in their small apartment. Because, Mike Wheeler is his best friend. And straight.
Mike, who feels like the world is falling apart around him because Will wonāt even look at him in the uber towards the bar, and wonāt even talk to him. And it feels like all his fears are coming true. Heās going to lose the most important person to him, and of course itās because of his stupid feeling, of course he couldnāt just control them, of course he couldnāt be normal.
Oh. And itās karaoke night.
Mike, who is wallowing in self-pity like a lost dog because as soon as they get to the bar and Lucas, Max, Dustin and El are all there, Will immediately puts a distance between them that felt like universes away. And so, he does the most rational thing he can think of. He buys a drink. Which becomes 2. Which become 4. And soon enough the bar is spinning and he cannot remember what drink number he is on. And his friends are all laughing and Max is up on the stage singing some Kate Bush song into the microphone. And when she returns, she takes one look at Mike and she ushers him towards the stage, Mike chooses the most obvious song choice.
Total eclipse of a heart.
And heās singing as if every word is pouring out of his own heart, and it is. And heās baring the absolute sorrow and desperation and yearning into every lyric whilst longingly looking towards Will, whoās sat staring wide eyed and breathless whilst Max is cackling beside him and El is on her feet clapping for Mike, whilst Lucas and Dustin are falling over from laughing.
But Mike doesnāt care, because Will needs to know that every now and then, he does indeed fall apart, and that those bright eyes are the only light in the dark.
And they kiss and they live happily ever after. The end.
