the droning under the floor

like insects that shouldn’t exist

like a millipede, carnivorous

with one hundred fangs in a spiral

or something else ridiculous

the millipede is creeping into my left eye socket and nestling under my eyebrow. i feel it feeding just under the skin. it never seems full.

the room seems darker

reality is an opposing magnet

did you ever do that, as a kid?

hold two magnets’ negative sides together, they wouldn’t want to connect?

why would i want to connect?

and the smokes are killing me

and the drinks are killing me

and the light is killing me

only one i can’t choose to abstain from

the droning

not just in my floor

it goes right down

remember that, in school?

that awful diagram with the brown then red, orange, yellow, god, the white in the centre?

i feel like the droning will open and swallow everything. even my millipede.

it’ll be morning after morning when i eventually sleep.

i’ll smell back burning and snow
