It sort of tickles me how many people were upset that some of the characters were aged up in a knight of the seven kingdoms. Because they clearly don't see the appeal of not one but TWO salt and pepper baddies. We were blessed.

Maekar's worst trait is that he loves his children too much. It's in "This man attacked my son" and "He's my last son" and taking the side of his most disappointing children even when he knows that they can't possibly be in the right. Daeron has the right of it when he points out that Egg could become a monster like Aerion if trapped in Summerhall, but Maekar refuses to see that because he hasn't realized that love isn't always enough. It didn't save Daeron, it didn't save Aerion, it won't save Egg.
