Some sketchy Bloodhound and Kitten nosies

*long-promised sequel to “Bakin’ Cakes”*

“S-so uh, w… will that be all Miss Kago-“

“Yes, Hojo, that’s fine. That’s all. Uh, right. Good!” Stacks of messy files smacking the wooden desk punctuated the words, the young lawyer staring past them to somewhere between the edge of her name-plaque and the fuzzy carpet. A throat clearing from her open doorway brought the folders back into blinking focus, and Kagome turned sharply to see her assistant watching her with that ever-present and oft-annoying look of worry.

“Are you sure you’ve got everything?” His helpful prodding would’ve made her smile any other day, but he’d picked the wrong afternoon to try and woo her with his gentleness. “If there’s anything I can help you with,….”

“It’s fine, really” Kagome snipped, shuffling randomly through the letters on her desk, scanning contracts and appeals and notes without reading any of them. She did not have time for this – for him. She was tired, she was cranky, she was stressed, and… she was still tied up in knots from her far too brief encounter with her husband the night before. Her cheeks warmed as memories of his large hands and exploring lips and muscled body tingled across her skin, and her hand rubbed restlessly at the back of her neck, lifting her thick black hair to cool the overheated blush.

… And quite forgetting she still had an audience.

now i’m looking at the ask again and wondering if you wanted one set *during* Dizzy Defense instead of just Kitten and Bloodhound. Huh. WELL! Guess I’ll have to do another one! ;3

Kagome shifted nervously back and forth in her seat, eyes flickering up to meet the prisoner across the glass before darting uncertainly to the photo in her hands.

“Do you, that is…. do you think I look like Kikyo did?”

Inuyasha stared blankly through the divider, eyebrows raised and head cocking to the side. “What kinda question is that? It’s been ten years - you think I remember whether you and her is similar?”

Her fingers flicked against the edges of the brown-tinted photo, and before she could second-guess herself, she’d slipped it through the slot in the glass to his side of the partition.

“Have another look then.”

Inuyasha’s yellow eyes clouded to amber as he looked at the faded photograph of Kikyo, her nurses hat atop sleek black hair and a demure smile on her lips. He felt ten years younger all of a sudden, and more melancholy than he cared to admit.

“I think we do.”

His trip down memory lane was cut short by the terse voice across from him, and he looked up to see Kagome looking decidedly down. Confused beyond all hope, Inuyasha looked back at the photo of his first friend, trying to imagine those same features on Kagome. There was a resemblance, sure, but it didn’t really fit.

He leaned back in the rickety wooden chair, staring hard at the photograph. Taking his silence for something it wasn’t, Kagome bit her lip and huffed “Is that why you agreed to work with me at the start? Because I reminded you of her?”

Inuyasha’s eyes shot up at the strained note in her voice and the alarming smell of salt, to see that hazel gaze focused accusingly on him, the redness in her face threatening tears at any moment.

“Hell, of course it weren’t! I just told ya I didn’t remember exactly what she looked like. Just what’re you tryna say?” But Kagome ignored his question, pointing through the glass at the photo still resting in his hand and saying “look at her, and tell me we don’t look alike!”

“So ya look alike, so what?” Slapping the photo to the table, Inuyasha crosses his arms and waited for her response with a scowl. She only grew closer to tears at his words.

“You realize what that means, don’t you?” It was said so pointedly, so accusingly, that Inuyasha had to roll his eyes.

“Yeah, I’ll tell ya what it means,” he snapped, leaning forward to shove the picture against the glass at her, “it means I’ve got a weak spot for pretty women with black hair!”

Kagome realized what he’d said a second sooner than he did, her flushed and gaping face catching him off guard. “What?”

“Wh-whaddaya mean, ‘what’?” By the time he realized what he’d said, it was far too late to save face. “I, That is- I mean a weakness, y’know? Like I can’t get you black-haired women off my back. You’re just causin’ me trouble, day in and day out!” He gave her his toughest glare, but the damage had been done. At least she wasn’t crying anymore.

“I see” she mumbled, glancing down to the photograph lying innocently between them. “Then… you don’t see me as a replacement for her?”

Inuyasha jerked back as if she’d slapped him. “Replacement? You think just cause you and her look a little bit alike I’m tryna trade her in for the newest model car?!” Kagome’s head ducked sheepishly, and Inuyasha realized he’d stuck his foot in his mouth yet again. “Look, I didn’t mean… I’m just sayin’ I don’t need someone fillin’ in for her, got it? One was more than enough- just look where it landed me!” His hands waved about the dingy visiting room with barred windows, waiting until Kagome looked up and got his point before continuing. “That part of my life ended in jail. I don’t want a repeat of that, and I’m not lookin’ for another Kikyo.”

Kagome’s eyes were trained on his, brighter and clearer than they’d been her whole visit. Inuyasha swallowed hard, wondering just how much he was willing to reveal to his sharp-minded lawyer.

“You’re nothing like her, Kagome, and I’m good with that. What would my life be without a ‘Kagome’ in it, anyways?”

It started out small, no more than a quirk to her lips, but soon the prettiest smile he’d ever seen stretched across her face, and Inuyasha’s heart skipped a beat.
