I was in your place once. In the eldest of the Elder Days. Thirteen of us were chosen to be blessed of Morgoth's hand, with the promise of power. A new birth. I was led up to a dark and nameless peak. Chained and left. And after what seemed endless thirst and hunger… I saw it. His servant's face. Sauron's face. And it was beautiful. He offered me wine, red as a blood moon. He offered me wine, and on that dark and nameless peak, I drank it. I drank it all.

I wasn’t sure to post this but as we are talking about characters in Ripper Street who show a different side of their nature.

I was struck by Shine’s empathy for the dead fighting dog - the old fighter who died of his wounds - and his annoyance at Frank for interrupting this moment.

We, who imagined we saw off death, but there was, for us, no true resurrection. We have a course. Now we we’re bound to the reeking purgatory of these streets, more cursed than the dead, who at least know their peace. For with us, there lingers like a whore’s perfume the dream of a life. Here, there is a hell of its very own for the dreaming dead.
