Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Badger
Charging Badger by Raoul Vitale
What is a Badger (flavorfully)?
An aggressive, furry monster that’s only held back from being terrifying by being so small. Basically a tiny bear.
What is a Badger (mechanically)?
Any resemblance between the four badger cards is a result of small sample size. Three are green, one is red. They range from 1/1 to 3/3.
Can I make a Badger deck?
No. There’s not enough of them, there’s no badger support, and the ones that exist aren’t even good.
Is Badger a good creature type?
It’s not that Badger isn’t an appropriate typing for the things that are badgers, but like the Antelope Ungulate issue, Badger’s type really needs to be raised a few taxonomical levels to Mustelid, which is basically the latin word for Weasel. That would also include the half-dozen Wolverines, Joven’s Ferrets, and Bronze Sable, and while I understand that one person out there really wants Sable to be its own creature type, Mustelid or Weasel should just absorb all of these. There’s no real benefit in keeping them separate.
I think ROUS would be a great creature type that would cover these.
Rodents of unusual size? I don’t believe they exist.
When does unstable officially start for spoilers
Monday. Note that we had a preview card yesterday (Dogsnail Engine).
Is that dog-snail engine or dogs-nail engine? 🤔
This is happening right now on Twitter! (Source)
Different outlets have been mailed giant pieces of a Contraption card from Unstable, and they’re being shared and put together!!
AHHHHHHHH!!!!
Dogsnail Engine (backside or token?)
Artifact - Contraption (uncommon)
Whenever [???] Dogsnail Engine, target [???] life equal to the [???] among creatures [you control?].
I think @hazoretspartyfavors created the perfect image for this situation…
I think the final card is going to have an effect that counts the number of creature types among creatures its controller controls.
(P.S. It is abundantly clear to me that my Contraption speculation was 100% wrong, and as promised, I am still 1000% excited for Contraptions!!)
Looking at how the images sync up, seems likely to be merged. There’s no way that “pti” of Contraption in the type like would be that close to the word Artifact. Also, no casting cost.
I think the reason it has no casting cost is because the card begins the game face down on “Sprocket 3” (whatever that means.)
Good catch on the “pti” of the “Contraption” subtype being too close to the Artifact type. There’s obviously more going on here.
Two other people on Twitter have confirmed they have packages waiting at home from @wizardsmagic so hopefully we’ll know more once they manage to open them up and share what’s inside!
WE HAVE ANOTHER PIECE!! (Source)
It’s coming together!
(Looks like this is also linked to whoever writes @theunquirer blog)
OK, so the ability of the Contraption says this:
“Whenever you crank Dogsnail Engine, target player gains life equal to the greatest power among creatures you control.”
That seems pretty straightforward, except for the “crank” action.
But on the backside of the card it has instructions about a “CRANK! counter” moving to different “sprockets” depending on a condition at the beginning of your upkeep. This is still very mysterious.
Two more pieces! (Source)
As exciting as this all is, I think I need to step away from it for a little while. Responsibility beckons, and my ADHD brain is on stimulation overload right now.
If anyone else is interested, feel free to keep updating things here! I’ll be back later.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control a Contraption, move the CRANK! counter to your next sprocket and crank any number of that sprocket’s Contraptions. (Sprocket 1 follows Sprocket 3.) – So where is sprocket two? or sprocket four?
OK, we now have 8 out of 9 pieces revealed (Source)
So “cranking” seems pretty to understand. You attach your Contraption to one of three cranks, and at the beginning of your upkeep you trigger the effects for all your Contraptions on Sprocket 1, 2, or 3. (Depending on which sprocket the CRANK! counter is moved to.)
But we still don’t know how Contraptions are “assembled” and put into play. They have no casting cost, so they aren’t cast, and Steamflogger Boss doesn’t let Riggers target which Contraptions they assemble, so it must be random.
At this point I suspect that as you draft or build a deck for Unstable, you also build a separate “deck” with all Contraption cards. Creatures in Unstable (such as Riggers) would have abilities on them that would cause them to “Assemble a Contraption,” which would allow the player to reveal the top card of their Contraption deck and put it on the battlefield.
That’s my best guess at this point. Thoughts?
So it’s like that mechanic from Tarkir! I like it, it’s random, like contraptions should be!
I don’t think these are printed on the front and back of the same card.
It’s complete!! (Source)
Adorable shell doggo turns the wheel to power the engine!
Guess we’ll be waiting until Monday to find out how Contraptions get assembled (I still suspect a separate deck in the Command Zone) but it’s sure fun to see a genuine, official Contraption card!!
(Also, it does beg the question, “Can a card be ‘silver-bordered’ if it has no border at all?”)
Well, this is happening.

With me it’s not so much that the plot will come to you, but that events will continue to happen whether you are there or not.

Sneak attack podcast fan art comic. An ongoing disagreement between Brenna and Greaek returns as they search for a hidden entryway.
Pluto is not a planet
You are wrong and I hate you
Pluto is not a planet
Pluto is totally a planet. It’s absolutely a planet
If it makes you feel better, Pluto is a dwarf planet
You’re a dwarf human and Pluto is a planet
Don't feel bad, Pluto. I'm not a planet either.
Playset of distressed Therapies.
I know a standard set for Kamigawa is very unlikely (as you never say never) but what are the chances of having an origins style set that includes Kamigawa as one of its planes?
An expansion set on many worlds, like Origins, is probably Kamigawa’s best chance to make it into a Standard-legal expansion.
I've talked about this before and would love to see this idea gain traction.
You know what I just realized? I disliked a lot about Mercadia, but I would love to see you return there in order to redeem it and make it a plane I would like.
Doing a design just to prove you can is a horrible reason to design a game.
This right here has been my argument against contraptions from the beginning.

Why should Blue be the only color that gets counterspells?
The same reason only black has discard. Color differentiation.
Certain things make sense to shift from one color to another over time. Countering spells should not be one of them.
Starting Monday on my Twitter - Head-to-Head: Power Words. If you saw just the title of a new card, which word would excite you most?
From a strict power level perspective, Mox gets my pick.
This week the Social Team received a stunning gift from 89 different fans, most of them members of the MTG community here on Tumblr. This effort was coordinated by Max (@commandtower-solring-go), from Australia.
The gift contains a lovely letter and a nice binder of cards, some have notes attached, while others are signed.
This is a wonderful reminder that not only do we work on a game that brings many people joy and meaning, but we have the honor of being part of a creative, fun and all-around awesome community.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
-The Magic: The Gathering Social Team
Very cool.
Such a great game. Such a great community of players. Always happy to be around all of you.
More Memes I made. :)
Have you ever done Godhunter Octopus?
MLLARGHBLARGH!
I love seeing this come up in my feed

Slivers by StoneStrix
This homebrew adaptation of slivers into d&d is terrifying.
Bad movie references in a card alter. Makes for scratching heads and groans. #gpindy
