In today’s edition of “I Can’t Believe This Video Exists”, New Order shreds a distinctly New Order-y rendition of a song written by Ian Curtis before his passing (and performed at a couple of Joy Division gigs). Bernard Sumner had first sung it more in Ian’s voice than his own, but here it’s very much his, and the song is better for it. 

This almost unbelievably clear 40 year old video shows the superhuman skills of Stephen Morris on drums (calling him “the most underrated drummer of all time” feels like faint praise – it’s true, but he’s so much better than that) and the uncanny melodies of Peter Hook’s bass. Gillian Gilbert had only been performing with the band for a few months, but here handles the heavy lifting on guitar, one of a small handful of videos to capture this before she turned exclusively to keyboards.
