<Research>: Never-ending Nightmare, played and analyzed by psychologist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKlhgGcVTRE&t=1035s
This video is about the psychological analyzing done by a Japanese Psychoanalysis Yasufumi Nakoshi (ĺčśĺşˇć) , commenting and giving thoughts about this game which was made my creator who suffered by mental issues and family problems, in terms if the characters, atmosphere and narratives.Â
Itâs interesting how he could give hypothesis about the authorâs mental issues by only looking at the main characterâs design, which said by Oscar Wilde in his The Picture of Dorian Grey: âEvery portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.â (1890). I could find some similarities, both characters under my pen and in this game have bigger head, small mouth and relatively weak body structure. Suggested by Nakoshi that small mouth sometimes indicate negative maternal relationship, as the weaker mouth muscles sometimes result in lack of breast fed during the early childhood, which was true for me. On the other hand, the weak limbs indicated the incapability in real world, unable to stand-up(physically and also sexually). According to this perhaps I could say some of the features of my infant characters have the power to indicate the theme.Â
On the other hand, he also suggested an in interesting point, that the baby-like monster as the enemy in the game, perhaps suggested that in the authorâs view point, babies are horrible and ugly living being, or even, new born lives are in somehow grotesque.Â
In my images, babies donât have smooth and soft skin but terrcotta rough, and their faces looks dull and emotionless. Perhaps I chose the correct expressions for the theme, however they are also repeating all the times with the same angels and gestures. I should visualize various activities of small children, however, the drawing style is still bothering me.Â
The collective references that influenced, inspired during this personal project.Â
Research : Louise BourgeoisÂ
Roughs and notes while researching Louise Bourgeoisâs installations, comments and interpretations.Â
Materials: Pan pastel series.Â
I realized that the previous works I did were almost lack of visual records of roughs, testings and processes, they usually ended up with fine finished pieces which perhaps have killed other interesting possibilities and reflective consideration.Â
1. Further researches and sketch on female bodies and ancient goddess figures, while resonating with concepts of vessels. It also refers what I have been think critically about female bodies in critical written assignment, the concept on contain and places where life chemical reactions are occurring. They possessed two totally different textures and quality, maybe I should think about replace/ combine and play with the materials? perhaps using real object would help? ---> if whatâs the point of drawing realistic quality while the real ones are already there ? -->artists who use found materials to make installation.--->especially the usages of fabric.Â
2.For those previous pieces, they were usually based on scarped sentences/comments that relate to the theme. Thus, they were quite incoherent and random, without a clear narrative which couldnât represent the theme clearly. For the later pieces I need sort out and related thoughts and images together/ collage them on larger piece?Â
3. The most concerning problem I strongly doubted and worried about the drawing style and characterâs design, especially those of toddlers and infants. Perhaps the beginning of the project I took inspirations from folk toys, but I received feedbacks that the faces are too naff and cartoonish, which perhaps didnât fit in the atmosphere. I need to practice more on the dynamism of characters and the surrounding, since many angels, composition and perceptions are merely repeating.

Materials:Â Acrylic gouache paint, acrylic, pan-pastel series, pencils, woven yarn, fabrics which came from my motherâs old clothing.Â
A developed piece of work which I combined ideas that I found most provocative and touching, while being developed as the children characters are less cartoonish. However, I still find many problems within this piece.Â
The patched lump was reminiscent as the injured mother, in forms of a broken plushie ball. In my sense the reason why I use the same fabrics on the maternal imago and childrenâs bodies, is based on my momâs saying:Â âYouâre a little flesh fell down from my body.â. Perhaps the it should be bigger, as to shown the overwhelmingly different sizes of bodies, also could be a menace figure who is planning her retaliation in the eyes of children? ( from Malein Kleinâs suggestions).
The childrenâd still looks less life-like, almost a doll. It could be suggested as a interesting combination of both toy elements and realistic, however, I found there are less powerful and touching, which perhaps resulted from the less heavier and toned paint. For the next piece, I intend to use more diverse colors of skin tone rather than just plainly one, and make the texture more obvious.Â

His works have influenced me largely on the ambiguous forms and facial expression, whom has the most inspiration from primitive art activities. His characters are mostly infantile and have minimal sexual indication.Â
However, his works are mostly indicating the idea of mentally infantile adults, the lost, loafing and ambiguous sensations, the dullness of the expressions are betrayed by the vigorous and wild colors. Â
Feedbacks from tutors: Jan, Chris, Foz, and Phil/ From classmate
From Jan -it seems you are bit tired and frustrated with the stages you are on by now. -working with different media: using collages with photos, fabric and even found objects. -looking at outsider artists who use strings: the idea of warping around objects ( related with D.W. Winnicottâs observation of a boy who obsessed with strings, that indicated his complex relationship with her mother and the family). -half graphic & half 3d? being illustrator doesnât mean it has to be flat and graphic. It could be a series of objets and shoot as sequential images. -characters: human figure with toys? âuncanny? look at Peruvian dolls- toys made of people who died? -sequencial images as child growing up from birth towards death? -Work on bigger canvas, stick and collages, using fabrics and stitches. From Chris: A well composed presentationYou are obviously engaged in your research and projectThe drawing indicate that you have looked at and studied toys and childrenâs interaction with themThe colour palette you are using is unusual and far more sophisticated than one would normally use for a childrens book â that is a strength you havenât gone for the obvious â bright colours and tones. There is a warmth in the colours â something nurturing .The use of colour and fabric also helps to reinforce your concepts. The 3D element â the string also helps the ânarrativeThe sequence âabout the gazeâ works wellYou have written out for yourself a well-structured planThe âfinal illustrationâ seems to have worked and you have implemented you concept of mixed media Perhaps the little beads on the eyes of the child arenât necessaryJust make sure the fabrics etc donât overwhelm your actual drawingIs the work for children or adultsI would advise you make a beautiful work that is wanted by both that both groups can view it from their perspective. As to a final format  - if they are larger pieces how many would you do? ďź I am planning to make least 5 pieces, at least A1 sizes) What scale might you work?I feel that the images might well work in a book format  - then you would have to impose some form of narrative sequence â but it need not be a story it could be the facts.  What I might suggest is perhaps scan and print out the images you have and lay them out in some sort of sequence to see how the look and work From Phil: -The characters seem to cartoonish, if the audience would mainly be adults? -Maybe is better to focus on the childrenâ s aspects, not complicated with feminism theme ( personally I regard this as quite problematic since the my intentions and ideas are tangled with mother-child & child- toy relations that they are not mutually exclusive. How toys and the interaction with them unveil the hidden ambivalent sensations children have while they coping with maternal relationship in domestic areas. I REALLY need to make this question clear, or, go with instinct? ) -The child character: looks like old man? â need to observe & life drawing. need to think about and distinct toyish/ real infant characters. -need to make clear what you are talking about with your image? about infant or older child? From Foz: -looking backwards. it seems like you are going back at the starting point. Make images that make sense to you, and take time visualize them. For this stage is the time to stop browsing researches, but record, develop and go further with them. -identify your interest âwhat kind of relationship you are tackling with? -force your hand more. make quick and rough images of single ideas: 50 images of mother-child relationship. String as cord: strong and powerful metaphor: make 10 images of belly bottom? 10 objects/shape relate to my mother. -relationship: different stages : inside the mother? outside mother? you identify with certain toys as your mother, are you looking/ interested in certain kinds of toys? -celebrating the ideas with excitements. -group those ideas and elements. From classmates: -audience: mainly would be adults. but could also be interpreted by younger generations. -could be in form of patched fabrics? ( could be drawn on the top? ) or using thread/ fabric as lines and tone.
Materials: color pencils, acrylic paints, acrylic gouache, printed newspaper
After reflections on previous drawing styles and figure, I did some quick observational roughs based on my childhood photos and pictures of children playing in the museums. Perhaps I could say the figure is much more better as the previous ones are too cartoonish, which is something I should do earlier, I was too obsessed and overly confident about it without questioning.Â
I decided to take slower pace and more focused on design the details of the observational playing scene described by Melanie Klein (Selected Melanie Klein), of a girl fantasied her sexually indicating relationship with a boy by crushing wood toy cars together, and she interpreted maternal anxiety of maternal issues.Â
The first images on the left was the earliest stage of the drawing, which the limbs were drawn without details, indicating the primitive stage of human life, with the mud-like bulk which suggests the always shape-shifting bodies in the mind of children.Â
