For many soccer is just soccer and thereās nothing more to it, this article covers part of design in soccer. Graphic design and advertising inspiration comes from everywhere and it is the target audience that sometimes requires a certain communication method, by investigating your target audience one designer or illustrator will create a work of art that is the breath of the finding, on the target audience.
Design in soccer, or soccer in design. In whichever way you call it one way or another influence is great in South Africa, especially during the FIFA 2010 World Cup this phenomenon manifested. An example will be the illustration of the āmakarapaā hat won and one of the proudly South African items that we have in soccer. South Africa has a unique culture in soccer, the word āmakarapaā itās a Xhosa word that literally means āmigrant workerā, and these workers are known for their safety hats (Souter, Design Indaba). The supporters of the teams source out the safety hats from hardware. The hats are crafted and painted based on the team being supported. The picture below shows one example of the āmakarapaā hat, won by a soccer supporter.
However the link between designers and soccer is depended on a particular brief or on personal projects. During the 2010 soccer world cup soccer had an impact in advertising and design. Brands tapped into using soccer as an inspiration platform for their advertising. Nandos is one of them; they crafted an illustration inspired by the hat. Illustration created by Meryke Naude together with Justin Joshua and Peet Pienaar, all three being graphic designers and illustrators with inspiration took from āmakarapaā. The illustration, has the makarapa hat, within the makarapa, thereās story telling about South Africa, the Soweto towers, the taxi industry, nature and the cultures there of. The story telling can be seen in the icons being used in the illustration, maze meal, words like āmzansiā, a venecular word meaning South Africa.Ā
Design is everywhere, yet it interest me in this country with so many cultures, and one of them being football and the reach colors within the game, murals, hats, t-shirts, to rides painting. One of the reasons, I love design as a graphic design student it is everywhere and you learn about new things every day, and it connects all the industries into one by getting different projects.
