Thoughts on 49ers Losing the Superbowl
I didn’t really expect the 49ers to get there this year. Shanahan and the 49ers had a very good year. The Chiefs were going to be a tough opponent and everybody knew that up front. Â
The game was really going according to schedule. The pass rush showed up and Patrick Mahomes was up to his normal type of plays. The speed on KC was definitely there. It was hard to get them off the field.
The turnovers were the difference maker. I really expected the 49ers to be able to use those turnovers to add more points. Patrick Mahomes was very elusive in the pocket. Some people might have noticed some holding, but nothing was called. In the end it didn’t matter. Â
The bottom line is that the defense could not stop the KC offense late. There was one drive in particular when Andy Reid and the Chiefs went to the hurry up offense. The 49ers defense really lost a little bit of steam on that drive. It did slow them down.
Everybody was waiting on the big plays down the field and eventually they showed up. The 49ers pass rush was right within reach, but each time, Mahomes would make the throw. Â
The play calling in the 4th Quarter for the 49ers by Shanahan was crazy. Why not run the ball? Why not attempt to drain the clock? The defense could not keep KC from scoring and it was just a matter of time. To have a lead in the 4th quarter and allow the Chiefs to get 21 points on your defense is just unacceptable.
KC got the win. The 49ers are going to really look back with disgust at this game in the future. Trips to the Superbowl don’t come around very often. Â
