Armand turned towards the familiar voice and smirked when he saw Bliss. âNow that would have been a tragedy. No, itâs my damn cat.â He squinted over at her. âYou wouldnât happen to have seen her? Sheâs small, black, really skittishâŚ?â
"Tragedy, indeed," she quipped, shoving her hands in her coat pocket and glancing around the area. "But no sign of the cat. Why'd you let her out anyways? I thought cats were inside pets?"
It had been something inevitable â to lose someone on the ground where blood was shed and raw fists met sore bones. The muzzles of anotherâs gun pressed against your temple. It was the life they had chosen, and yet, the reality of it all had only hit him in this particular instant, when the last exhale stroked pale lips of a dead body. The price a martyr had to pay.
His gaze was of eerie calm, almost inanimate as he was eager to witness her reaction, as his own words resounded within the hollows of his mind, in a cruel echoing sound. Breathing filled and emptied black lungs in slow strokes, inhales and exhales. Nodding all the while she spoke, as an act he could not control. An impulse he could not repress. Natural reaction, without involving a heavy mind. âDuring the riot â he caught a bullet for somebodyâ, not mentioning a certain name, to avoid increasing pressure on the french womanâs shoulders.
Bliss felt like she should have expected something like this. Someone was bound to lose their life in the panic that had been the riots. And she hadn't really expected herself to care as much as she did that it was Declan's but she couldn't help the deep breaths she had to take to maintain her composure and keep from tears wetting her cheeks.Â
He caught a bullet. It wasn't even meant for him and somehow Declan had ended up paying the price. It was strange how it felt mourn, though Bliss hardly thought this was going to be the worst of it and she didn't really know why she was mourning in the first place. Most of the time she wanted people dead. "I--" she finally said, lacing her fingers together to keep from anxiously fidgeting. "Thanks for telling me, Ben."
Collinsâ eyes went wide for a split second before he raised an eyebrow and looked around the kitchen. He settled for a cooking book that was given to the redhead by his mother during the holidays, something to find a home for in the apartment. He flipped it open, a smirk on his face. It wasnât all that surprising to see the two talking, especially after the impression Bliss had left on his parents. âTell her I said hi, will you? Collins, her son.â He added at the end with a short laugh.
She couldn't help but crack a small grin at him and the sarcasm he was exuding as he leaned back against the counter and Bliss wrapped up her conversation on the phone, setting it to the side. "She's just worried you don't eat enough," Bliss commented offhandedly, peeking at the recipes he flipped passed. And had she not moved in, it would be a very valid worry from his mother. He might soon start putting on weight if Bliss wasn't careful.
"Nox!" Armand whistled once and continued down the road, eyes peeled for any sign of his furry roommate. "Where the fuck are you?â he grumbled under his breath.
"Did you lose the good wine?" Bliss was just on her way home when she'd caught wind of a familiar voice and paused with a bemused expression resting on her pale features.

Iâll Make A Man Out Of You | Mulan.
You must be swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon. With all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as the dark side of the moon.

"Heyââ Collins stopped talking when he saw Bliss was on the phone. He had come home earlier than expected that day, other things were on his mind and having something else to do always made him quick with office work. He slid off his jacket and hung it up on the coat hanger when Blissâ conversation caught his attention. It was something about dinner that night and he walked over to the kitchen, crossing his arms around his chest when he came into view. âWhoâre you talking to?â
Bliss had been hanging around when the phone rang and was surprised to hear Collins' mother greet her like they'd known each other for years and  years when he'd only met the woman briefly over the holidays.  She'd been chatting with the lady for about an hour when Collins came home early, delivering a second surprise that day. When he spoke she wagged her finger and mouthed, "It's your mother, shh."
Bliss Miller: probably an asshole
The loss of a friend had infected his bones and made his heart turn bitter for the undefined while. Apathy and outer indifference were the striking traits in this particular time of year, that had never been easy for him anyway. Abandoning a family, was now accompanied by the painful addition of yet another unwanted memory, he would relive in each night â the death of someone who had resembled a brother to him.
He looked up at her, wondering how she could have missed it â word had made its round. Had spread like a wrathful wildfire. All of Rome knew, what he longed to forget. It was attributed to the oblivion, ruling his forlorn mind in foreign realms of melancholia. He had not paid a lot of mind to the familiar faces around the mansion, with two exceptions named Juliette and Augustine. A glance upward, straight into her eyes. Blue against blue. âHeâs dead, Blissâ, it was the first time he said it and his voice sounded surprisingly steady. âDeclan is dead.â
There were a lot of things she might have considered out of his mouth but word of Declan's death wasn't one of them. Sure, she hadn't heard from him, or seen him, or heard about him--until now--but she'd never considered that he'd died and it was like a punch to her gut in slow motion.
It started with the air she exhaled, and how her eyes shifted from meeting Ben's to the floor between where he sat and she stood. Her whole body went cold, and then it was numb. "De--" she cleared her throat when her voice came out whisper quiet. "Dead?" Declan had been annoying, sure, but never once did she wish him dead. He helped save her. He'd been part of the equation that Collins told her about. And just like that, he was subtracted and soon he'd be forgotten. "How?"
Confessions | Bliss + Collins |
There was a strange, stirring sensation inside the gawky guy. He couldnât quite place it since it was such an unfamiliar place for him to be emotionally. But it was there, and it was undeniable. Collins was filled with anger for the first time in a long time, maybe ever, which was almost ridiculous to think about but the man didnât walk around looking for trouble if it could be avoided.
There were many things frustrating about his OCD, but what could never be fixed was the frustration he felt when he needed to make his thoughts comprehensible. Sometimes he would like to just once be able to tell someone exactly what he means, exactly how he feels, in the exact way he means to. With no interruptions or misinterpretations. So thatâs what Collins did, he sat there next to Bliss with her hands in his for as long as he had to in order to gather those tangled thoughts. His eyes weer burning holes into the skin on top of her delicate hands, over the knuckles. Then it came, all at once.
"All the events in your life lead up to this moment." He looked at Bliss then, her eyes were the same, she was still her. No matter what new information was revealed. And as he spoke he felt the anger dull, not fade, but dull. "This one right now, one that doesnât feel very special at all. Just an ordinary, possibly boring, moment. Your life, and all the other lives of every single person youâve ever met, spoken a few words to, or smiled at, have all been the little variables in the equation in the whole that is you." He wanted his words so desperately to make sense. "Youâre the factor, the end sum of situations and consequences that were not yours to control, or yours to manipulate." People did what they did, often without a justifiable reason. "These variables, composed of good and bad, are that. Variables. Theyâre undeniable, unavoidable, ultimately inescapable." They didnât make anyone less of a person, if anything it made them more.
"You canât forget the biggest variable of all. You are a whole, you are the sum of all your lifeâs experiences, and in the end, at this moment now, you yourself are the biggest variable of them all."
Her hands in his made her feel solid, like he was anchoring her down and keeping from floating away into the mess that was in her head. If there was any inkling that Bliss could have avoided the conversation forever, she might have tried, but he'd asked her before about less intrusive things that should have lead to that point and he knew it.
But on the other hand, there was a part of him he'd given her long ago that she was well aware he didn't give many people. His condition, though he'd never said it out loud to her, was something that affected him all the time, like Bliss's nightmares, but different. She was sure he didn't have monsters dancing behind his eyelids or fear things that lurked in broad daylight. But the finer details didn't matter. He never once accused Bliss of bringing things on herself, or brushed off anything plaguing her mind as something she made up.
And Collins' words interrupted her thought process as he began his soliloquy, lulling Bliss along with the cadence of his voice.
She intended to speak up, when he said that this moment may not feel special to her (when in fact she was sure she'd remember this for the rest of her life whether or not he was in it), but only got as far as parting her lips, before she snapped them shut again and continued to listen to him.
"Don't forget to factor you into that equation," she murmured, squeezing his hands in hers, and tracing the lines in his palms with her fingers. "I may be the finalization of this ever-changing equation, but there wouldn't be a me without you. Not now, I don't think. I mean who knows what would have happened if I hadn't had your help." She could be dead. It had occurred to her more than once that her death could be near the longer she stayed in the bordello, and she had resigned to accept that fact, but he'd been an innocent beacon, pulling her out of a rut she hadn't even realized she'd been in.
Bliss didn't know if she could ever really give him a proper thanks for all that he'd done for her. She didn't know if it was possible at all.

The palm protected sore eyes and heavy lids, before it dropped. The familiar tune of her voice massaged sensitive eardrums, leaving him multiple ways of reacting at a poor attempt of making him glance up. It did work however, a bad joke, which would have been usually commented on with a faint smile. Instead, brows knitted together, confused as to why she was joking, before the idea came crawling to him in a dragging process. His heart seemed to drop, nausea sticking to the walls of his stomach. âNobody told youââ, it was a question, rather a fact, uttered in hidden shock.
It was a dark feeling that settled in the pit of her stomach, almost looming but it was coming from underneath like the Devil's handsome hand reaching out to caress the warmth from her.Â
"Told me what?" Her question came out a mere whisper, breathy with how nervous Bliss was to receive the news since since it didn't exactly sound like it would be good things dancing across the air to her ears. She'd like to be pleasantly surprised, but something about the look on her face told her such things were light-years away.

The grief and lack of emotion was still apparent in the way his posture left much to be desired. Slumped against the backrest of the comfortable chair, tiredness consumed him. Could have delved back into the world of a restless slumber, if the awareness would have not kicked in, in time. Night terrors startled him in his sleep and shook him awake. Cold sweat was soaking his skin and clothes, the blankets and sheets. They worsened ever since his best friendâs blood had been glued to his hands. Desiring revenge, that he could not receive. The man had paid for the bullet, meant for Juliette, betraying Declan of his life. Three shots to draw blood on his skin and leave him to die at the hand of agony and hatred, boiling in his veins.
Bliss spotted him then and having only spoken to him briefly since he'd been released from the hospital, though now instead of calling after her he was slumped in his chair, looking positively pale. And when he didn't look up at her arrival, she leaned against the wall near him and crossed her arms. "Was the Christmas turkey that bad?"

Once, Bliss might have been willing to betray the people she knew in the Revelations for a chance to get out of the bordello had Raphael offered her a position in the Cessations. This is no longer true, even if she does maintain a casual friendship with him.
