kai smiling is literally the cutest thing ever i cant even
the sound of moving water is the best thing in the world. rain falling, waves crashing, fountains tinkling, streams gurgling, a lake lapping, cascades crashing, springs burbling...it's all so beautiful.
-katsuki bakugou
The water’s cold on his face as he washes himself with it. Splashes it on his newly dyed hair. Golden. Colour of the sun. Light. Cheerful. The colour makes him look like a different person. Someone younger. Thinner. The hollow of his cheeks stand out. So do the freckles. The hair swoops down on both sides of his forehead. He brushes the locks back with wet fingers. The person that looks back at him in the mirror is definitely stronger than the one he was staring at before.
Tala closes his eyes and sighs through his nose.
Anxiety creeps underneath his skin like ants. Making him restless, agitated. His heart feels sick. He thinks about Kai.
Thinks about seeing him. Meeting his crimson flecked eyes. Thinks about being seen. Observed. Acknowledged. Judged. Then he thinks about sinking into his arms and the anxiety quietens. His heart slows down. Tala thinks about the feel of Kai’s lips on his neck and his worries turn into excitement. Anticipation. Thrill.
Happiness.
He opens his eyes and bites his lip. He can’t wait to see Kai again.
O
Tala pulls on whatever he thinks Kai would like to see him in. Red. He likes red on him. Stuff that brings out the colour of his skin. The pink of his nailbeds. He laces up black boots that reach halfway up his shin with a small smile on his face. When he’s done he looks in the mirror and he wonders if he should take a bag with him. Some clothes for a few days. May be he could share Kai’s. May be they could get one of the staff to get something for him. Clothes aren’t an issue. He doesn’t like lugging things around anyway. Phone, wallet, keys. Toiletries….
Fuck that.
He’ll worry about toiletries when he needs them.
He grabs his jacket and heads to the elevator.
O
On the drive there his anxiety racks up again for some reason. Stomach turning rancid. The meal that Kai left for him in the fridge stewing in exacerbated stomach acids.
Tala parks on the curb and walks the rest of the way there. The guard slumbers next to the gates. He lets himself in through one of the many, many doors to the estate, picking through the locks easily. When he enters the halls are silent. But it’s always been that way. The house has always been…big and quiet.
Too many rooms. Too many hallways. Too many studies and libraries and hideaways. Kai can hide here forever if he wanted to. No one would know.
It feels a bit like old times. Back when they would play hide and seek here. Tala avoids the rooms and areas wherever he hears any noises. Noises that don’t sound like Kai. The rooms look the same as they did fifteen years ago.
He ventures upstairs. Climbs to the first floor. Looks around. Climbs to the second. Looks around and finds him in the room farthest from the staircase. Kai lies sprawled across the bed inside, staring unmoving at the ceiling.
Tala walks in without creating noise. Not wanting to ruin the peace he’d made for himself. He smells alcohol. And he smells pills. And on the bed he smells perfume. Perfumes that don’t belong to Kai. When he sits down next to him Kai’s head jerks toward him. His eyes falling upon his face. They crinkle up with joy and surprise and Tala can’t help but smile back.
“Hi”
“You’re here” breathes Kai and his voice sounds like he hadn’t used it in a while. All broken and dry. Same goes for his mouth. His lips lack moisture as they stretch to smile.
“Yeah”
His arm reaches for him, toward his hair. His fingers fall just short of touching it. “You look like the old you,” he says.
Tala sucks his lips in. Doesn’t answer to that.
Kai’s staring with fondness. “Are you real?” he asks.
“I think so,” answers Tala.
Kai’s smile spreads into a grin. He sits up just to grab him and drag him into the mattress with him.
O
“I like the hair,” he says, brushing it back from his forehead.
“Thank you” he says. Kai kisses his mouth.
Tala thinks about Granger. He wonders how much it’d hurt if he knew. He wonders if he already knows. How could he know? Kai wouldn’t tell him. Would he?
Kai’s watching his face. Closely. “What are you thinking about?” he asks with a smile.
“Does Tyson know?” he breathes. “That you’re…sleeping…”
“Around?”
Around? Suddenly he recalls the other perfumes he smelled on the bed earlier. The ones he can still smell faintly if he concentrates on them.
Of course.
“Yeah”
Kai makes an amused sound. A snort and a close mouthed chuckle. “What do you think?”
He shrugs. “I don’t know. Did you tell him?”
For a second he looks like he’s going to answer but then he exhales and rests his head on his shoulder. Sneaks his hand up his stomach and draws a ring around his belly button, making goosebumps spread up his chest. Then he starts kissing, up his shoulder, his neck, up the side of his face. “I missed you,” he says breathing against his skin.
Tala, feeling unarmed, decides to drop the subject for now since he doesn’t seem to want to talk about it. His worries about Granger scatter away from his mind when Kai’s lips trace over his right eye, down his nose and stop over his mouth.
“I want to see Ahmya,” he says against his lips.
“Ahmya?”
“Hmm. She’s in Dubai. At Palm Jumeirah. I think she’s living there.” He drops a kiss on his mouth and pulls away. “Do you remember her?”
“Wasn’t she your first?”
“Yeah”
“Why do you want to see her?”
Kai shrugs. “Because I haven’t. In a long time.”
Tala runs a hand through Kai’s hair. Tries to comb it sideways. It flops back down. Unruly just like him.
“Do you want to come with me?”
“Sure, why not?”
O
“Did you see him when you were coming up here?”
“No, of course not. I made sure to stay away from staff. Does he know you’re here?”
“Yeah” says Kai.
Tala slaps a hand across his own mouth. “He does?”
He nods, gaze on the ceiling. “I passed out in a pool of liquor yesterday. Or may be that was two days ago?” He frowns, unsure. “Anyway it was at the bottom of the stairs. He saw me.”
He can’t help it. He laughs. Forehead touching the pillow.
Kai joins in but his laughter has less strength behind it. It’s weak and light. Thoughtful. “I tried to set this damn thing on fire again.”
“You…tried?” Someone stopped him? But who can stop Kai if not himself?
“Mhm. I’d turned the dials of all the stoves. Was getting to the cylinders when the staff came into the kitchen. I’d knocked down a bunch of shit earlier so they knew I was in the house. The noise scared them and…they wouldn’t leave and I couldn’t burn it down with them inside so...”
“Was this before or after Soichiro found you?”
“Before”
“How many days has it been?”
“I don’t fucking know.” He presses his fingers against his eyes and yawns. “You should ask Tyson. He knows. Baby knows everything.”
Everything?
He exhales after saying it. And for once it's the most obvious sigh in the world. Longing. He’s longing for Tyson.
O
Granger knows? So if he knows then does that mean that they’re not together anymore? Kai had shown up at his apartment nearly a month ago and then he’d dropped off the face of the planet before making that drunken call yesterday.
“Are you not with him anymore?” Tala asks him at the club.
Kai slides his sunglasses up his head to look at him. “With who?”
He rolls his eyes. “Tyson”
“Of course” he says, like it should be obvious. “We’re in love.” Then he drops the glasses back over his eyes and goes back to vibing to the beat. A little while later he grins at someone and he makes out with them for a minute before going outside and throwing up.
Tala rubs his back then Kai sits on the curb and cries with his head in his hands.
It makes his heart bleed.
He cries inconsolably even as Tala sits next to him and offers affection.
“I’m sorry” he says, turning to look at him with teary eyes and wet cheeks.
“For?”
“For…for Bryan. I could have-“
“It’s not your fault,” he says automatically, rubbing his shoulder. “There was nothing you could have done to-“
“There was. I could have saved him. I- I- I knew and I didn’t stop it.”
“Stop…stop what?” he asks. His hand stilling on him.
“I-I-I….There was another way,” he says sniffling. Wiping his nose on the back of his hand. “There was another way to do it but I didn’t. I didn’t choose that.” He shakes his head, chin on his hands that are folded atop his knees.
There’s pain in his eyes. Trauma.
Tala takes his hand off his shoulder. Sets it in his own lap and he tries. He tries to stay grounded. To stay with Kai. But his hands and feet go cold. His heart shrivels in his chest like a flower in winter.
He thinks it dies.
He’s dying.
When he looks at Kai he’s looking at him and he’s so fucking beautiful it hurts. He’s never been prettier than he is now. With his eyes and mouth full of apologies. A sorry in every pore of his face. His lips wobble and Tala doesn’t know what to do or say but he speaks anyway. He says something that he can’t hear. Lost to his own ears.
“I didn’t want to save him,” says Kai. “He was stupid. He killed himself. Why should I- I didn’t want to save him.”
“You think he deserved it?” asks Tala, trembling from head to toe. Shaking like a leaf in a storm. “He was your best friend.”
Kai shakes his head. “No. He never got me.”
Anger floods into him at that moment. Slams into his bloodstream so hard he jolts. “You let him die because he didn’t understand you?”
“No. He killed himself. I just chose not to save him.”
“You’re a piece of shit.”
He stands up and walks away, unable to stand to look at him for a minute longer.
But the more he walks the more his blood flows. He can hear footsteps behind him. And then he hears him breaking down again. “Yuriy” he calls. “Yuriy please.”
“What the fuck,” he says to himself. “What the fuck.”
“Yuriy” Kai pleads.
Tala turns around. “I hate you. I fucking hate you. You’re literally the worst fucking person on earth. I have never met someone worse.”
A tear breaks free of Kai’s right eyelid and rolls down his cheek.
“Why did you do that?” he asks him in a whisper.
“I don’t know,” he says.
“I hope you’re miserable forever. I hope you’re never happy.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“It should have been you instead.”
“Then you wouldn’t have me anymore,” says Kai.
“Good fucking riddance.”
Kai stares at him with wet eyes. “You don’t mean that.”
Tala turns around and starts walking again.
“I never want to see you again.”
“You’re coming to Dubai with me,” he says.
He stops. Pivots. “What? No.”
“Yeah you are.”
“You’re dreaming if you think I’m coming with you.”
“Well you have to or I’d pin everything on you.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Kai pulls up something on his phone and hands it to him.
He looks at it. It’s a pdf of a police report.
“We’re wanted?”
“We have to go in for questioning.”
He feels cold. His whole body feels cold.
“If you come with me I’ll talk us out of it. If you don’t I’ll pin it all on you. Bryan’s dead. Sergei was missed by the cameras. And they’ll find out Ian’s clueless upon interrogation. I’ll talk my way out of it like I always do and that leaves you. You’re so smart, Yuriy, and people hate you on sight. I won’t save you if you don’t come with me.”
Tala can’t believe his eyes or ears. Kai’s tears have all dried up. It’s like he wasn’t crying just a few minutes ago. “How the fuck does Granger love you?”
His gaze softens upon the mention of his name. The reminder of Tyson bringing a smile to his lips. “I ask myself the same question everyday,” he says, and the smile on his face grows. His eyes shine with joy and barely contained excitement.
Oh
Oh
“You’re in love,” says Tala.
Kai nods. “Told you”

KAIREI BRAINROT IS STILL ACTIVE FOR NOW IN MY BRAIN (ノ≧∇≦)ノ ミ ┻━┻(✧Д✧)→
kiss and for some reason there is water I don't know how to come up with reasons hehe ⊂(・▽・⊂)(^~^;)ゞ
Bladebreaker headcannons - "Stupid in love"
KAI HIWATARI
• Micro Stares: He catches himself staring too long — in matches, in downtime, in conversations he isn’t even listening to. When confronted, he denies it with a sharper-than-needed “...You’re imagining things.”
• The Over-Correcting Gentleman: Suddenly, he’s holding doors, pulling someone out of the way of a puddle, offering them his scarf when they shiver. He doesn’t even notice until Tyson smirks and says, “Since when are you Mr. Polite?” Cue Kai growling and walking away too fast.
• Jealous, but Subtly Stupid: Not the loud type, but the “folds arms in the corner, glaring daggers at whoever’s making them laugh” type. He’ll mutter a low tch and act like he doesn’t care, even though his body language screams otherwise.
• Bad at Normal Compliments: He wants to say “You look nice,” but it comes out as, “...That colour doesn’t make you look completely ridiculous.” (Translation: breath-taking, but Kai.exe cannot compute softness.)
• Distracted Fighter: His battle focus is legendary — but if the person he’s smitten with is in the crowd, his guard slips. Just a fraction too slow, just a glance too long. Tyson would never let him live it down.
• Uncharacteristically Patient: For the one person, his fuse stretches. The team notices he’ll actually listen, let them ramble, even answer without snapping. That’s when Hilary or Ray start side-eyeing him with knowing grins.
• The Accidental Confession: He probably blurts something mid-frustration — “Do you ever stop making me worry about you?!” — and only realizes he said too much after the silence hits.
Why It’s “Stupid in Love” Because Kai, the one who measures every move, becomes clumsy in ways he’s never been before. His silence turns into fumbling half-sentences, his sharpness softens into protectiveness, and the great Kai Hiwatari — cold, unreadable, untouchable — is suddenly obvious to everyone but himself.
RAY KON
• Too-Smooth Becomes Too-Much: Ray is normally charming in a natural way. In love, though? He overthinks every word. What should be an easy compliment ends up sounding rehearsed or too intense. (“Your smile could… uh, never mind.”)
• Nervous Hands: He fidgets with his ponytail tie, his wristbands, or whatever’s in reach. The usually graceful fighter suddenly doesn’t know what to do with his hands.
• Over helpful: He’s the first to volunteer to carry something, fix something, or run errands for them. Tyson calls it “Ray’s personal butler phase.”
• Soft-Eyed Giveaway: His gaze softens whenever he looks at them — warm, fond, obvious. Everyone notices. He doesn’t.
• Clumsy in Battle: He tries to stay focused, but if his crush is in the crowd cheering? He gets distracted, pulling flashy moves just to impress. Sometimes it backfires spectacularly.
• Jealous in Silence: Unlike Tyson, who would loudly pout, or Kai, who would glare, Ray just goes… quiet. Withdrawn. He doesn’t know how to voice it, so his energy shifts and the team can feel it.
• Laughing Too Easily: He finds everything they say funny, even if it isn’t. Tyson absolutely teases him for “that dopey laugh you only use around them.”
• Confession Style: Ray doesn’t blurt it — he builds into it. One late-night talk, when it’s just the two of them, his words slip out softer than he intends: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way about anyone before. And… it scares me. But it also feels right.”
Why It’s “Stupid in Love” Because Ray’s usual balance gets thrown off. He turns flustered, over helpful, and a little obvious. His teammates can see every crack in his calm exterior, while he’s convinced he’s hiding it well. He’s still Ray — kind, warm, steady — but love makes him clumsy in the sweetest, most transparent way.
MAX TATE
• Walking Smile Machine: If his crush so much as waves at him, Max lights up like it’s Christmas morning. Tyson teases him: “Bro, you’re grinning so hard your face is gonna crack.”
• Talks About Them Constantly: He doesn’t even notice he’s doing it. “Oh, they like this snack!” … “They said something hilarious yesterday—” … “Did you know they’re actually really good at—” The others roll their eyes, but secretly think it’s endearing.
• Show-Off in Matches: He pulls risky moves just to impress. Like, unnecessary flips, or over-the-top saves, then immediately glances at them in the crowd to see if they noticed.
• Gifts & Gestures: He buys little things that “reminded me of you” — snacks, keychains, flowers. His suitcase during tournaments? Half full of these impulse buys.
• Zero Poker Face: If his crush compliments him, he turns red immediately. If they touch his arm or shoulder, he practically short-circuits.
• Jealous Puppy: Not aggressive, but clingy. If someone else gets their attention, he suddenly needs to be involved in the conversation.
• Team’s Favourite Target: Tyson and Ray endlessly tease him about being “love drunk.” Kai just mutters “pathetic” under his breath, which only makes Max sulk harder.
• Confession Style: Blurted out mid-excitement. Probably after a win, adrenaline high, he just beams and says: “You know I’m crazy about you, right?” Then realizes what he said about five seconds too late.
Why It’s “Stupid in Love” Because Max is too obvious. His crush doesn’t have to wonder — everyone can see it from a mile away. His joy, his clumsy efforts to impress, his endless chatter — it all makes him the most endearingly “stupid in love” of the group.
TYSON GRANGER
• Louder Than Usual: Which is saying something. He tries to impress by talking a lot, telling stories twice as animated, or laughing too hard at their jokes. The team notices immediately.
• Big Gestures: He thinks small things won’t cut it. Instead, it’s “I saved you the biggest slice of cake!” or “I’ll totally win this match for you!” (followed by him dramatically pointing into the stands).
• Bragging Rights: He casually drops their name into conversations just so he can talk about them. “Yeah, but you should’ve seen how impressed they were when I landed that move.”
• Competitive for Attention: If someone else is making them laugh, Tyson suddenly has to one-up them — whether it’s with a joke, a silly trick, or an impulsive challenge.
• Zero Subtlety: Tyson doesn’t even try to hide it. He’ll sit too close, throw an arm around them, or yell their name across a stadium without shame.
• Jealous in Public: Unlike Kai or Ray, who simmer quietly, Tyson will actually pout or complain out loud if someone else is getting too much of their attention. “Hey! I was talking to them first!”
• Flustered When It’s Real: The irony — when things get serious, his confidence cracks. If they complimented him sincerely or touch his hand? Tyson turns into a red-faced stammering mess.
• Confession Style: Dramatic, unplanned, in the middle of some chaotic moment. He might shout it across a battle arena, or blurt it out after nearly choking on food: “Okay, fine, I like you! A lot!”
Why It’s “Stupid in Love” Because Tyson’s feelings are written in neon lights. He’s reckless with them, tries way too hard, and accidentally confesses before he means to. Everyone around him knows long before his crush does — and when it finally clicks, he’s both the happiest and most embarrassed guy alive.
It doesn’t mean anything, he tells himself as he leans over to kiss Kai.
Fake dating. He’s been fake dating none other than Kai Hiwatari over the last one week. His childhood rival he used to make ugly faces at over a game of spinning tops. He met him for the first time when he was 10. The guy suddenly appeared out of nowhere and Tyson proceeded to see him consecutively over the next three summers as well, before he disappeared to wherever he had come from. Never to be seen again. Till now that is. Tyson will never forget orientation day when he went and smacked head first into the guy’s chest. Kai and he never became friends. Their personalities were far too different. They disagreed way too much to hold a proper conversation with each other.
Now, however, they are dating. Or pretending to. Tyson’s best friend Hilary likes Tala. Hilary, being the sweet person that she is had been too reluctant to go out with Tala when he first asked her, because she worried Tyson, god bless his single ass, would get too lonely without her. She was ready to sacrifice her chance at true love for Tyson’s sake.
While on the other side of things, Tala had been repeatedly poking fun at Kai for having never been able to hold a girl down for longer than a week, when Hilary suddenly turned him down. Kai, being Kai, took the chance to take his revenge, which then resulted in a stupidly heated argument between the two during which Kai accidentally blurted out that he was in fact very much taken and very much in a relationship.
When asked who he was stumped. Until a lost Tyson walked into that empty lecture hall in the same moment with a pile of books in his hands.
“Tyson” Kai had said, looking at him
Tyson wakes with a start the image of a decrepit old woman with mismatched eyes staring out at him from inside a darkened hallway fading from his mind. The sheets around him feel damp and so he shoves them off his body and blinks at the ceiling, one hand stretching towards the right side of the bed. It’s cold. Kai hadn’t come home last night.
He hasn’t been home the last three days.
Shira jumps on to the bed then and curls up next to him. Tyson threads his fingers into her silky soft fur.
“Hi” He scratches under her chin. “Morning”
The cheetah purrs deep in her chest and gives him an endeared lick across his cheek making him smile.
“Do you miss your daddy?”
Shira misunderstands and licks his chin affectionately.
“Not me. Kai. He hasn’t been home in three nights. Doesn’t he want to see us? Doesn’t he miss us?”
She must sense his sadness because she rests her large but soft head on his chest, right above his heart. Tyson wonders if she’s listening to it beat. The blood pumping through him. “When is daddy coming home?”
It’s merely been ten minutes when Kai starts picking at his skin. He takes a seat in a corner next to a big window and gets lost in his head. Tyson talks to a few people there before making his way over to him and nudging his leg.
“Hey”
Kai looks at him, lets out a little sigh and draws closer to where he’s standing near the wall. “Not having fun?” asks Tyson, running a hand through his hair.
His knee jumps as he fidgets, fingers twining and untwining as he looks around the room. Then he looks back up at Tyson and says, “Want to get out of here?”
He smiles. Fond. “Yeah”
Kai drives around aimlessly before pulling up to a sidewalk and putting his head in his hands.
“What’s wrong?” Tyson rubs his arm, offering comfort.
“You know what’s wrong,” he says, words a little muffled.
“Yeah” He sighs. Wishing he could take Kai’s pain away. Hurt for him instead. But since he can’t do that he leans over and rests his head on his shoulder.
He hears Kai sniffle and knows he’s crying. Tyson, heart breaking in his chest, wraps an arm around his waist and holds him tight.

He’s crying. On the bed.
“What did I do?”
“You didn’t do anything.”
“Then why are you crying?”
“I don’t know because I’m sad?”
“Why are you sad?”
The bed is on fire. The apartment is on fire. He needs to move out. Run the fuck away from here. Fix Tyson.
Tyson rubs at his eyes, digging his wrist in.
“Don’t do that,” says Kai, trying to get him to stop.
“Don’t touch me.”
“What did I do?”
“Don’t fucking touch me! Stop fucking touching me.”
“I’m sorry. I’ve stopped. I’m not touching you!”
Whimpers fill the room. Kai wants to tear the whole building apart.
“What happened?”
“I can’t think. Kai, I can’t think at all. I was trying to do my assignment but I couldn’t get the words out. I couldn’t write a thing.”
“It’s okay, love. It’s okay. I can do it for you.”
“No!” He screams. “I don’t want your help. I don’t- don’t want your help. I want to be able to think. Please. Kai. Please.”
He glances at the bedside table and opens the drawer.
There are two types of writers:
1. 'It's fiction, it doesn't need to make sense!'
2. 'I didn't account for the rotation of the planet and how that affects the constalations while my characters stargazed at different times of year, I have failed as a writer, and this entire thing is trash'
They’re both me
