working on a (partially whumpuary-based) installment for flowermouths! it's one of the first to take place some years after a different world, but i am going out of my way to avoid any spoilers for exactly what happens during that story.
sooo it's a little deprived of context, but im really excited! here's a sneak peek π

Damian supposes some things canβt be helped. He knows itβs only natural that his family dislikes him and distrusts him, just as he distrusts and resents them. He came to them right after Stephanieβs death, after all, and theyβre not his real family, anyway. His real family is back in another world - his family who loved him, who helped him and cared for him when no one else ever had.
(Well, thatβs not quite right. There had been his mother, once. But sheβs gone. She has been for a while.)
Still, it smarts that this worldβs Timothy assumes the worst of him, that Jason accuses him of trying to replace his dead sister, that his birth father can't seem to look him in the eye. Damian is acutely aware that Dickie is the only one who appreciates his presence, even if such a realization makes him miss his Richard so badly it aches.
Cassandra is tolerant of him as well, though he avoids her to the best of his ability; he is certain that she can see through him as well as his own sister could, even if she has never said anything because she can't say anything, because this version of Damianβs sister never learned to speak and is still learning to understand spoken language. The most communication one could obtain from her is through the intricate system of sign language that she and the family have gradually created over the years. Damian has yet to learn more than the few words that Dickie has shown him.

i saw this ask when u first sent it and i got so excited that my brain malfunctioned too much to answer it right away VSVFB so sorry for that delay but also thank u bc i LOVE to think abt Metalhead Damian. he is my little man <3
i haven't written down any of my headcanons for my agenda yet so im taking this as an opportunity haha
Thoughts on Metalhead Damian (how i envision him anyway):
- Being raised in the League, Damian never really listened to music. Unless he was out in the world (in which case he heard what was on the radio or what was playing in public), the only music he'd heard much of was classical, as well as some traditional Arabic songs.
- Even once he's moved into the Manor and starts hearing music more often, it's usually just what he hears Tim playing from his room, or what Dick plays when he visits.
- He does not like any of the music they listen to and ends up thinking that he just dislikes music in general. He doesn't value it much at all for a long while.
- Steph is the one who ends up unintentionally changing his mind.
- In my mind, Steph likes all kinds of music, including metal. I like to think that she shows up at the Manor one day to study with Tim and insists on putting her speaker on (despite Tim's protests, because music helps her focus).
- The first few songs are exactly the kind of music he dislikes, and Damian, while working on a drawing nearby, only tolerates it because he doesn't want to get in trouble again for being rude to Steph.
- Then one song - a song like nothing he's ever heard before - comes on. With rapid drums and shredding guitar and deep bass. Then the singer starts to scream. Damian is stunned. His heart races.
- He tells himself he is appalled by the song and chimes in with an agreement when Tim asks Steph to skip it. She begrudgingly does, and Damian thinks that's it.
- But the song will not leave his mind. He spends the next few days with his thoughts straying back to it, wondering what the rest of it would sound like, and against his own will, he ends up texting Steph to ask what it was. She tells him, and he ignores her when she asks why he's asking.
- He listens to the song. Realizes how hard the lyrics hit, how much the emotion of it resonates, how the racing of his heart is excitement. He searches for more music like it.
- He definitely hides his love of it from his family for a while, finding it somewhat embarrassing and unbecoming of him.
- (Besides, if anyone realized how much he relates to this music, that would be far too vulnerable, wouldn't it?)
I'm gonna stop there bc this is getting long but yeahh. Yeah. I love metalhead Damian.
