The ocean off of Natacoast is sentient, made up of countless spirits. These spirits are in an endless cycle of reincarnation with the residents of Natacoast (as well as Hasket)

It follows the pattern that a sea spirit will incarnate into a newly born human, and when that human dies the spirit returns to the sea, and will eventually incarnate again.

In sea form, they retain memories from every incarnation. Spirits have complex social bonds with eachother, despite lacking corporeal form, or even an actual society.

Spirits are by default genderless, although the lives they live may impact how they ultimately view themselves.

Important Spirits:

The 2 sea spirits with an integral role to the story are Kat and Camilla Nova. They are sibling spirits incarnated into twin bodies.

What makes them different from typical incarnations of other spirits is that they were not born into these bodies, but instead occupied them after the origional girls tragic deaths. This means that as opposed to being mostly human, they mantain the memories and mannerisms a spirit would typically have out in the water.

This is soon revealed to not be unique, as an increasing number of spirits begin to occupy lives already partially lived, throwing off the balance of human and sea spirits.

Natacoast (nay-TOH-coast) is a city state to the east of the country of Hasket (Has-ket) Roughly 100 years before the story begins, it fought and declared independence from Hasket. However, in the past 50 years, Natacoast has developed a good relationship with Hasket. Because of Natacoast’s location, Hasket is the only country capable of directly trading with them.

Natacoast consists of three districts, which have their own district's and individual communities.

The Epicenter: The Epicenter is located on the border of Natacoast and Hasket. It has the most active economy, and is the only part of Natacoast that the government has any control over. It is the smallest district in terms of size, and has roughly the same population as The Outskirts.

The Epicenter has three subdistricts; The Core, North Owlside, and South Owlside. The Core is where the government and research is located.

The Outskirts: The Outskirts are by far the largest section of Natacoast. The Outskirts has roughly the same population as The Epicenter, however they are spread out into many communities throughout all of The Outskirts. 

The Outskirts have too many individual communities to list all of them, however some notable ones are: Lockfrieght, where Ace comes from; Mistrise, where Cascade is first met; Francisville, a community located almost entirely in an abandoned shopping mall; New Owlside; Riverside, a community that consists almost entirely of runaways from The Epicenter; And Oscarslick, where a man who is trying to build a boat to leave Natacoast from from the Shoreline.

The Shoreline: The Shoreline is located to the far east of Natacoast. It is almost impossible for anyone from the government to reach because they would have to pass through The Outskirts, which puts them in danger of attacks by the residents of The Outskirts. The Shoreline is the smallest section of Natacoast, both in size and population. The ocean, nicknamed ‘The Escapist Sea’ is the only way to leave Natacoast without having to past the heavily watched and guarded boarders into Hasket.

There are several small communities, most of which are made up of a few families. The sea goes out very far, to the point where it would be impossible to get anywhere with the kinds of boats that can be had in The Shoreline. Boats are fairly common, to the point where pretty much every family has one, mainly for fishing purposes. 

The Epicenter is the center of the city of Natacoast. It is located right near the border of Natacoast and Hasket.

The Epicenter consists of three main sections: The Core, Northern Owlside, and Southern Owlside. Residents of the Epicenter usually shorten it to Nowl and Sowl.

All imports and exports from Hasket has to come through The Epicenter, and are controlled by the government. Resources are distributed by the government, throughout The Epicenter, mostly to stores or distribution centers.

Because of the distance from The Core, where the government is based, to The Outskirts, much fewer resources are distributed there. Those that are typically non-perishable, things that can be reused, or things such as plants and livestock. For this same reason, the government has significantly less control in The Outskirts. Because of this, they want to keep as many people as possible in The Epicenter. Most people who run away to The Outskirts/The Shoreline are children, because they do not want to live in the dystopian environment. The Government tries to keep people from leaving to there, but cannot logistically hunt people down once they have made it there.

The Core:

The Core is where the government of Natacoast is based. Very few people live there, and instead it is largely offices and research facilities. Most people who work there live nearby in the Owlsides. The only people who live there are the highest figures in the government, and people who are considered to know ‘Too Much’ and might potentially share information. Those people are not allowed to leave The Core. Some of these people are the higher up scientists, who fully know the purpose of the research, and those who work to keep such information from the public.
