Their poster boy carries around a metal dinner plate.â Phoebe has always thought the stars and stripes were outdated and that shield does nothing but confirm in in her opinion. All of the avengers are nothing but gimmicks, little puppets to make the general population feel like theyâre safe. âYou donât have to tell me. Almost every kid walking down a New York street has Iron Man plastered on their t-shirt.â The blonde goes onto the roll her eyes. âIâm so happy to find someone who understands me, Tatsu.â Â

She was not alone. Most people did not know that occult studies existed. Though Daimon did not teach it because it was cool. He taught it because he felt the more people were educated about the supernatural, the better off they would be if the ever encountered demons. âIt is pretty cool, and youâre not the first one to tell me that. Iâve had plenty of students who either took it because they think itâs cool, or because they think itâs an easy class. But itâs definitely not easy.â He might not have done any live exorcism demonstrations, but he fancied it was more interesting than math. âDonât get too excited. We read and take notes, mostly. Though I throw in the occasional sĂŠance to keep things lively.â He smirked, both because he was teasing and because communicating with the dead was the very opposite of lively. Seeing that she assumed her pose, Daimon took the picture. âLooks good to me, but you should judge for yourself,â he said, passing the phone back to her.
Ryoko knew she didnât make a mistake by coming to New York. Sheâs met so many neat people already. New York feels like itâs own world, everyone stories all so different and they all interested Ryoko in different ways. âI would totally be one of those students -- not the âit being easyâ part, more the it sounds pretty cool part!â Truth be told she had no idea colleges offered those kinds of courses, but everyoneâs got a niche and clearly the class must be in high enough demand for someone to teach it. She has to wonder what sort of job field theyâd be going into, all she can think about is exorcism. Oh, sheâs falling down into a rabbit hole of wonder. In another life maybe sheâd be able to take this class. âOh you canât tell me not to get too excited and then tell me you preform sĂŠances! Iâm sure itâs nothing like the movies though. Iâm a big horror buff.â The woman goes onto laugh a little bit. âSo do you ever come into contact with anyone? How does that all really work?â Sheâs beyond intrigued, so much so she almost forgot why she had stopped him in the first place. âOh! Yeah... I totally forgot.â Ryoko glances down at her phone, swiping through the photos before flashing the man a smile. âThese are great, thanks!â

How strange it is for Bucky to be so at ease right now. Usually he would have fled the scene by now if this was any other circumstance. He would have excused himself and left the woman woman to her own, but this new hobby of Buckyâs is far too important. Now heâs got little lives that look forward to him everyday and itâs very possible that this may be some of these cats only source of food. So, he had to push back that uncomfortableness and it seemed to pay off. Heâs hitting it off as well as he can with the stranger. Heâs not making things strange or awkward. Instead heâs enjoying the conversation, cats and partners -- itâs truly as safe as any conversation can be. Bucky carefully removes one of this gloves, revealing flesh fingers, knows that these cats would much rather smell his scent than faux leather gloves. âThatâs what Iâm hoping with mine.â Bucky chuckles a little bit as he lets a few of the cats sniff at his fingers, before scratching gently under their chins. âIf I just bring a cat home, theyâll end up just falling in love.â He hums a little bit at the thought. It would be cute to have a shared pet, because Bucky doesnât really consider Redwing a pet. Heâs more of... well -- itâs hard to explain. Itâs like having another person in the house with the attitude Redwing has. âI donât think Iâve given enough thought to which big cat I like the most. -- Maybe a cheetah? Thatâs pretty small for a big cat though.â Fingers move idly against the soft fur of a cat brushing by. âA falcon.â He winces a bit. âWhich I know sounds really bad because heâs a bird of prey. Wearing the stars and stripes wonât be accepted well by everyone in this country but Sam knew that when agreeing to take over the mantle. Itâs vibrant and everything he wanted it to look like. This isnât Samâs first time wearing it out in public but news will travel fast. Someone is approaching him so he turns to look at them with a smile. âYou heard right. Iâm Captain America now.â

Clint wolf whistles lowly, giving the man a once over. âLook at that suit, Wilson!â Clint crosses his arms over his chest, leaning easily against the brick wall thatâs behind him. Should Clint really be back out in the action right now? No, but heâs still dawning his purple suit and quiver like he never left. âGotta say, Rogers has nothing on you. His suits were gimmicky at best.â The blond is teasing, mostly. âAlright, alright come on then. Show me a pose with the shield. Thereâs a chuckle leaving his lips ⌠ unable to stop himself from laughing too. âOh they sold maps in some of the shops but that also would require being smart enough to stop somewhere and buy one.â Which Thomas wasnât always the brightest person in the room and thatâs alright. It wasnât like either of them considered that as an option back in the forties. Maybe they ere just equally as stubborn like brothers bickering to try and figure it out for themselves before resorting to the piece of paper. When flight is part of your gift then that tends to give you an advantage to figuring out where you are. It also requires knowing a little bit of geography but Toro expects to be slightly lost until adjusting to being in the future suddenly. 2012 has been proving itself to being very different and unlike 1943 in many ways. âIâve never gotten the chance to race someone before ⌠and that sounds like a lot of fun! Should we place a bet to make it interesting or just enjoy our time together?â Toroâs expression brightens after finding out that Ryoko can fly too. It makes him feel excited. He doesnât really care much about winning, more so looking forward to having company up there in the clouds. There really isnât anything quite like that feeling! âI donât really remember them except for that story since they told it to me so many times. Jim adopted me when I was seven and heâs been the only parent Iâve ever really known. Iâm lucky to have him as my pappy.â He smiles back brightly at Ryoko while they talk. If it were up to Toro then his style would be filled of clothes only in various army related color schemes. He could really use some help with figuring out what to wear ⌠ whatâs considered cool. It makes him happy that the other seems so be excited about lending a hand. He tilts his head and is just staring at the phone. Itâs strange and Thomas just doesnât understand these tiny boxes. Heâs afraid that he might accidentally break one so maybe getting one can wait. Are they fireproof? âStreet style?â Consider him curious and Ryoko is running to his side to show him her tiny box. Thereâs photographs on it, the first time he realizes you can use them for more than just phone calls. âI really like the jacket on the last photograph! Where do we acquire one?â His shoulder gently bumps hers while also leaning in closer to get a better look at the illuminated screen. What kind of sorcery made this possible? Â
âSo it boils down to you and Bucky being way too stubborn to stop and get a map?â Ryoko can almost envision it -- what with her grandmaâs stories of the situation and now Toro telling it again to her from his perspective. She wonders if she could have any adventures like that with the rest of the invaders now that the gang is all here. Though sheâs not sure the whole map situation would happen again now that GPS is so popular but that doesnât mean they couldnât have their own wild stories. Maybe sheâs dreaming a little too much, a little too excited. They may not form this group of rag tag heroes again and even if they do, who says Ryoko is invited. Nevertheless, sheâs happy to spend time with Toro. Heâs kind and he doesnât seem to mind how excited she was to meet him. If sheâs being honest, sheâd like to earn a place in his life outside of being related to one of his old friends. She hopes that they can get to know each other as just Ryoko and Toro. âReally? Iâve only raced Baymax -- which.. I think is unfair because heâs kind of a robot who can use jets on his feet that reach Mach 4. So itâll be nice to race someone who flies like I do!â While itâs fun to pal around with Big Hero 6, they donât always need Ryokoâs help. So more often than not sheâs handling things on her own. Here in New York the state is teeming with people just like her but even then Ryoko still feels a little lonely. Maybe this is the little jump start she needs to finally find someone whoâs like her -- someone to float above the clouds with. Wouldnât that be nice? And now here she is once again, letting her daydreams get out of control. While the daydreaming works hand in hand with her songwriting, maybe now isnât the time to get lost in silly little daydreams. Nowâs the time to be out of her head and try to befriend Toro. âIâm happy you ended up with Jim... Heâs the most giving and kind hearted man Iâve ever met. It feels like an honor to know him.â Jim had gone out of his way to protect her after an outburst of anger caused an explosion. SHIELD was going to take her in and do who knows what but Jim vouched for her and kept her out of trouble. Sheâs still figuring out how to make it up to him after putting his reputation on the line like that. What she does know is that Toro isnât part of making up to Jim. Sheâd hate for anyone to think that sheâs befriending him just because heâs Jimâs son. Far from it, she wants to be Toroâs friend because she likes him. Thereâs an instant connection between them and Ryoko wants to keep the ball rolling. So if he needs help with getting into fashion? Sheâs gonna help out! âItâs like... styles that got popular from normal people rather than super expensive designers. Itâs usually more... lowkey. I figured youâd might like it because it involves a lot of jeans and tees. Itâs really easy to just throw on in the morning.â Ryokoâs elbows lean on the counter while she slowly scrolls through, letting Toro take in all the photos. It doesnât even begin to occur to her how strange this must be for him. Having a phone and using it to online shop is something that is so normal to Ryoko, itâs just a part of her everyday life. âOh, this one?â Ryoko smiles up at him once he picks out the jacket. It really doesnât shock her that the jacket is a dark green canvas material. She makes a note to remember that he might appreciate a relaxed military style. âWell, letâs see!â The woman taps the photo as it brings up another webpage. She hums for a moment before glancing up at him. âThis says thereâs a store in Manhattan that carries them! Should we go check it out?âÂ

It might not be the best conversation for them to be having while standing in front of a tombstone with Thomasâ name on it. He canât blame anyone for thinking that his existence is a hallucination after being dead for almost eight decades. He always thought himself to be indestructible due to the nature of his Inhuman physiology, the flames that constantly burn within him that can cover his skin in an instant. The fire burns a constant seven hundred and eighty degrees and thatâs always been enough even if he could always go hotter. When aflame all blades and bullets melt before touching his skin. Which became his favorite trick to use in the war even if that meant singing his uniform. He ended up having to roll up his sleeves. This became something like a shield, protecting not just himself but his best friends and fellow soldiers when the timing got tough. Thomas became so convinced that nothing could hurt him and that would become his downfall one day. Deep down he doesnât regret dying for his country. He knows that this is all real, obvious by the way his heart is beating so quickly. âSlamming doors would just be rude. Iâd knock and ask nicely to be invited in.â He laughs for a brief moment but doesnât linger on the subject knowing it would be hard for his best friend. He always thought that theyâd grow old together and share war stories with their grandkids. Thomas knows this isnât possible. His wife remarried and he canât bring himself to be upset. She deserved to be happy and doesnât look her up since it wouldnât be fair to reopen those old wounds if she were still alive. It was his time to move on. âBucks ⌠I had no idea.â His chest feels heavy with grief. His own grief.
Once Toro has arms wrapped around Bucky for an embrace itâs going to be difficult letting him go. He notices that the grip is stronger than he remembers but heâll have plenty of time to ask what that means. Times have changed but no matter what has happened? This is his best friend ⌠ his brother. Nothing could change the fact he loves him like family. They grew up together in Brooklyn and so it brings him some peace knowing that thereâs a familiar face here. âEverything is overwhelming.â He canât rely completely on Bucky for everything with adjusting to this new time period but it helps knowing that thereâs someone here who will understand why his behaviors are different from everyone else. He doesnât understand how telephones can be carried around on these tiny rectangles in your pocket or what the internet is. Only two of many, many, many technological advancements that leave Toro more confused than anything. Heâs sure there was someone talking to themselves in the street as if their friend was next to them but nobody was there. This world is odd but if he survived the war ⌠ he might be dead of old age before he got to see any of this. What a strange though that is. Unfortunately that isnât how his life got to end, instead, fate took him much too early. âThank you âŚâ Tears soaking Buckyâs clothes some more.
âThere was so much left that I wanted to do âŚâ Thomas could have went to art school. He could study French literature and spend his evenings sketching. He always envisioned this as his way of spending his time after the war was won. Maybe have some children, chasing toddlers around the house who recently discovered that they can create fireballs. However, life took a different path. Heâs learning to accept it little by little. âI donât mind being stuck with you. I wouldnât want it any other way. I appreciate you helping me figure out a way to stay.â They pull back a little, eyes red from how much crying he has been doing but wants Bucky to have the chance to really look at him. âHow much have you been working out?â Heâs teasing lightly, trying to open up the conversation to something other than his death.
Bucky always thought of Toro as indestructible. He knows where it stems from, he can pinpoint it down to the very moment. He thought the fire that could engulf his skin would protect him from anything and everything. As kids, it protected him against illnesses so he wouldnât get Steve sick. It could warm them on a cold night in Brooklyn or it could drive them crazy on a blistering summer day. That fire would simmer close to Buckyâs skin and warm him from the outside in, making him feel invincible too. They were just kids then, they didnât know the horrors that were just over the horizon. Fire that could melt bullets but not the Tesseract powered weapons Hydra had. Fire that would be extinguished when the 107th was captured. Bucky can still hear him screaming, he can still feel the hoarseness of his own throat when he couldnât yell for Toro anymore. A fire that went out and Bucky wasnât there to see it. He didnât see the last flicker of a fire he thought could never go out, after all theyâve been through now could it? No he never got to see that light die and maybe thatâs why he could never accept it. Even in the short time he got to mourn, he thought over and over again it canât be possible. There are myths of fire being reborn again -- rising from that ashes. And god --- maybe.. maybe Bucky was right after all. The embers never went out, they simmered because here is the phoenix himself. Toro is standing here, real and alive and -- warm. The fire has returned, not blazing, not yet but Bucky knows how he can fan those flames and help his friend after all these years. âI donât think anyone would willing let in a ghost --- âs a good thing youâre not one.â No one wants to be haunted, because in the end itâs still death that follows people around. Buckyâs got enough of that as it is, itâs nice that someone from his past isnât here to haunt him but rather... Bucky gets to guide him. âI know you didnât.. but how were you meant to know? I donât blame you, if thatâs what youâre worried about. I know why you did it.â He canât tell Toro just yet that he made the same sacrifice, that Steve made the same sacrifice. That would not only confuse his friend but lead them into a conversation that Bucky isnât exactly ready for. Heâs not sure if heâll ever be ready to tell Toro about the Winter Soldier.
Thereâs that warmth again. A sign that this is real, that Toro isnât some fleeting memory in his head. No heâs here and feeling just as much as Bucky is. And -- damn itâs so much to feel. So much grief and anguish. So much confusion and yet thereâs a kindling hope. Thereâs excitement that lingers because thereâs so much more to the world now. Thereâs so much Toro can experience and learn. He knows that Toro is going to have a hell of a time here in the modern world and thereâs not one else in the world heâd want to have these experiences with. âI know, pal. I know. It gets easier, trust me. I felt the same way you did.â He chokes on his own words, throat feeling tight from the emotions. He remembers when that dam of his mind was broken. The world was too big, it was too loud and too confusing. He had no one to navigate with. He wonât let Toro go though this alone like he did. No instead heâll walk side by side with his friend and show him everything he can so he can begin adjusting because... he wonât let Toro go back. Itâs selfish, but now everything has changed. Before he feared Hydra and wanted nothing more than to go back to his time but now? He knows if they fix the timeline, Toro dies. He refuses to let that happen. He couldnât prevent it this time but he will now. âThereâs no need to thank me... not for this. Youâre my brother and I wouldnât let you go through this alone.âÂ
His breathing is still stuttered as he listens to his friend. âThereâs so much you can still do. Youâve got time now, so much of it. Whatever you want, we can do it. The worldâs back at our fingertips.â Sure, it could dangerous for Bucky to be out in the open but heâs hidden himself for this long. They donât even know where to begin looking, he just has to make sure on guard and things should be alright. Besides, whatâs Hydra going to do when Toro flames on? Whatever happens, theyâll figure it out. They did then, they will now. âThereâs no way in hell youâre getting sent back there. You understand me? Youâre stayinâ here and I donât care who I have to hit to make sure it happens.â Bucky takes half a step back once they separate, god he forgot how tall Toro was. That always pissed him off, especially once Steve got the serum and shot up to Toroâs height. âIâve been working out a lot.â He laughs a little bit. âIf I couldnât be taller than you then I spent eight decades getting stronger than you.â Despite the fact heâs got his gloves on, Bucky still shoves his left hand into his pocket, an extra precaution to hide the stark silver metal that replaced his arm.Â

The three-year-old eventually settles in his arms so Garth decides to take a seat on the empty side of the bench, placing the boy in his lap, waving at the woman. âThank you! His name is Cerdian and Iâm Garth. Itâs a pleasure to meet you ⌠we arenât from around here, so thereâs been a fascination with all the different woodland animals.â
Pepper smiles warmly at them both. Itâs nice to be away from the chaos of work even if just for a little while. Sheâd been throwing herself into more lately, which was saying a lot given the fact she over worked herself as it is. But with the loss of Morgan, it was almost too easy to drown herself in work to distract from the grief. Now sheâs got to try and not face the grief head on and in the eyes of a child. So instead, Pepper gives the little boy a wave in return. âThatâs a beautiful name. Itâs nice to meet you Cerdian.â She speaks softly to the little boy, her nose scrunching up as she smiles. Soon sheâs looking up at the boyâs father. âIâm Pepper. Well.. I wish we had more creatures to show him. Itâs mostly just birds and squirrels around here. I bet heâd love the Central Park Zoo, though.. All sorts of fun animals there.âÂ

Maybe this has become a part of who Bucky is, heâs always watching and observing everywhere he goes. Heâs never truly at peace or relaxed, at least not in public spaces. Instead heâs always watching, eyes scanning the crowd over and over again. However when Bucky sees a familiar face, heâs a little more at ease. Instead of trying to make himself look smaller, he sits up a little more. Heâs more alert and attentive. âOf course.â Bucky nods towards the empty seat in front of him. âItâs been awhile, howâve you been?â He states, the two of them may not have gotten off on the best foot but that relationship was mended over time. Now Bucky considers Tâchalla a friend, how quickly the tide turns. âYou chose a good place to get a drink, best shop in the city.â Buckyâs not the biggest coffee drinker -- not like the caffeine could do anything for him anyways. He much prefers tea, instead.Â

Remy was not sure what bothered him moreâthat she knew what the snake was saying, or that the snake might spot his subtle hand movements. âYeah, datâs a new one. I ainât ever had a snake playinâ de game before.â And he was not sure he wanted to have one playing now. âCarnival? De nerve oâ you, femme.â He bristled at being compared to a common carnival barker. âYeah you gotta pay. âSpecially if dereâs two oâ you in de game. How fair is dat tâ me?â Remy raised an eyebrow as she dug into her purse, debating what price to set. He usually kept it low; that way people would keep trying. But the inclusion of the snake seemed to call for a higher price point. âWell, seeinâ as dere seems tâ be two oâ you playinââŚten dollars. Not five eachâtwo for you, anâ eight for de snake.â
âWell Precious is an adventurous little thing, she likes all sorts of new experiences.â Zelda grins at the snake, using a few fingers to scratch gently under the snakeâs chin. âWhat? Seems like one of those little gimmicky games, but Iâm willing to try.â Zelda could be more polite and not taunt the stranger but thatâs not really her game. Sheâll have a little fun with this guy while he has a little fun with her. Tit for tat in her mind. The woman doesnât mind the higher price, all the more fun since Precious getâs to play along with her. Most people tend to turn their nose up at her, which they often regret, however it is nice to have someone let them both play along for a change. âYou really donât like her do you? Thatâs a shame, she seems to like you well enough.â The woman hums, handing over the ten dollars. âSo, what are the rules to this little game, again?âÂ
