I cheated a little in my Michaelmas celebrations due to my work schedule.  I made my Struan Micheil/St. Michaels bannock and the accompanying black berry syrup the night before the night before Michaelmas.  I’m actually supposed to make it the night before.  So one night early but we’ll be saving it for Michaelmas.  And I’m the eldest daughter so it is my right to make the bannock.

This week, February 12 to 18, is Maslenitsa—the Pancake week! It’s one of the biggest celebrations of old time Russia and my personal favourite, a very festive time that marks the turn of winter to spring. I’m sooo getting stuffed with pancakes and crepes this week!

Jidáše (judases) are made from sourdough bread sweetened with honey. Rolled out strands are reminders of Judas’s betrayal and his subsequent death on the rope. Nowadays they are pretty rare and it’s not easy to find them in bakeries. 

Mazanec is a popular Easter cake from sweet sourdough with added raisins or almonds. It is one of the oldest Czech ceremonial pastries and families traditionally brought it on Saturday to the church to let it be consecrated. Some people even make mazanec for Christmas (or more precisely its variant called vánočka).
