Some summer reading...
Now that I am semi-pseudo-sorta-actually ON BREAK, I have actually had time to read a little Garcy fic, which is not something I usually do, rather than just writing it (like a motherfucker). Anyway, I have been enjoying it a lot, you are all beautiful and talented butterflies, and thought I would in fact make a rec list. If I was any sort of organized, these might be alphabetized or put in some sort of order, but I’m not, so they aren’t. It’s basically me digging into my AO3 history and going OH YEAH I READ THAT AND IT WAS GOOD.
Anyway:
Not-Quite-Silver-Linings by @starry19 (also starry19 on Ao3). A missing-scene 2x09 Great Empty Couchgate fic, for all the reasons. I loved it.
Nessun maggior dolore by @oldshrewsburyian (also oldshrewsburyian on AO3). I am obliged to include this because a) EMOTIONS, b) I dragged her into this trash can and she wrote it for me, and c) it’s just hella beautiful and painful and is about Lucy and Flynn post-2x10 and hurt/comfort and anyway. Yes.
asking for a dream or two and something i never knew by @mearcats (also mearcats on AO3). The first one is Lucy gives the journal to Flynn; the second one is another 2x09 missing scene/bedsharing that Gave Me All The Feelings.
Open Up My Eyes To a New Light, On The Bright Side, and Round and Round by @squidproquoclarice (deathmallow on AO3). I love all of these so much. Open Up My Eyes is like my favorite/preferred canon version of the 2x06 vodka/late night chat in Flynn’s room, On the Bright Side is fake married Garcy for troll Carol reasons, and Round and Round is another journal fic. She does so many character and historical details and anyway, it’s great.
A Walk in the Woods by @caprelloidea (also caprelloidea on AO3). Just an exploration of Flynn and Lucy in s2 and leading ahead into season 3, character moments, Hurts So Good Angst, and other important things. Also Sock Slides, because it’s adorable and we all need some silly fluff in our lives.
deep waters by @reystars (also reystars on AO3). HOOOO I LOVE THIS FIC A LOT RIGHT NOW. It’s the Titanic Garcy fic that we all need for reasons, and it’s very intriguing, and I can’t wait for the angst that’s absolutely coming.
(not) in the stars by @extasiswings (also extasiswings on AO3). Obviously I adore Christine and love everything she ever writes, as do we all. This is a Timeline Zero fic about the first time Lucy went back to give the journal to Flynn, what had happened before that, and it’s gonna kill me dead, but I love it.
Time Out by @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels (madsthenerdygirl on AO3). Straight up Garcy smut. Because reasons and I honestly haven’t even read the rest of the fic it’s from, but I was like “smut? Why yes. I like that.” Plus, we all know Mads. And love her.
BONUS NON-FIC REC: Y’all, you have got to read The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland. I made the mistake of wandering into Waterstones vaguely in the “I want to read something new, but don’t trust male fantasy authors,” mood, saw this book, and bought it about five seconds after I took it off the shelf. It will give you hella Timeless vibes (the main plot is about time travel and the government organization set up to do it), it’s really funny, it’s almost entirely narrated by women (there are a lot of ladies in general), and if you wanted zany workplace comedy about secret time travel organizations and the problems they face, this is the book for you. It’s endlessly creative, there’s a low-level will-they-won’t-they between the two main characters (who also give me some Garcy/Garcyatt vibes since the dude is a Flynn/Wyatt combo and the lady is basically Lucy) but no boring Straight Romance Subplot. They go to Elizabethan England and medieval Constantinople and colonial Boston and Victorian London and all kinds of other places, and boy is Flynn lucky he isn’t in this universe, because he would have caused Diachronic Shear. Repeatedly. That is… not a good thing. It’s science and history and magic and ladies and sass and everything I like in a book. So yes. I’m ¾ done with it, and I read 500 pages on the first day I got it.
Anyway. Happy reading.
