Liberty was written with a lot of negative black female stereotypes. The Mammy (most of her screentime on the show being her supporting other characters in a servant role with the support rarely being reciprocated), The Sapphire (her often being in an angry antagonistic role against Emma and JT, even during her own pregnancy), the Jezebel (pursuing a fling with Damian even as he was dating Emma), The Sassy Black Woman (her showing up in episodes just to throw sassy quips around), the Token Black Best Friend (She was often around just to support Emma and Manny and barely had any storylines and development to herself), The Strong Independent Black Woman (pretty much her whole personality and screentime across all seven seasons is her being depicted as strong and independent with barely any episodes highlighting her vulnerability and insecurities in her own POV and she was also frequently depicted as undesirable and ugly compared to the nonblack female characters on the show. Itâs telling that sheâs the only one out of her, Emma, and Manny with no endgame love interest), and the Ghetto Black Teen Mom (the pregnancy storyline where sheâs a pregnant black teen mom whose baby daddy sells drugs and then later gets stabbed to death at a party)
My problem is that lot of these aspects of Libertyâs character such as her lashing out at JT initially during her pregnancy and later him dating Mia mere months after they gave their baby up for adoption are actually quite understandable and needs to be looked at with more nuance and empathy by the fandom. Her being attracted to Damian and hooking up with him makes sense when you look at and critically engage with how the show aggressively made Liberty seem too ugly and undesirable to date for the male cast and how JT, her main love interest, was the biggest case of that. Damian made her feel super desirable and attractive in a way that no other male character onscreen really did except Towerz (who was so irrelevant he had no lines and her entire relationship with him was offscreen), and Emma was frequently worshipped by other male characters for her beauty, her smarts, and her sass and independence compared to Liberty. The problem is that Liberty was heavily underutilized on the show and treated more as a shallow supporting character than a main character who could carry these storylines on her own because the writers were racist.
However, even if she was a better written and developed character, she still would have gotten a lot of hate by the fandom solely for being black and this is the problem that white fans like to play obtuse about. Fandoms donât like black characters, they hate black female characters no matter how theyâre written and even in storylines that do give a deeper more interesting look into her character, people still badly project onto her because theyâre watching with the intention to hate black characters.
I wonder what would s10-14 and NC s1-4 be like if Mr. Raditch, Ms. Hatzilakos or/and the Shep was still principal?
Eliâs antics would make Raditch retire early. Hatzilakos would hate Zig. Cam would have offed himself his first episode under The Shep. The idea of The Shep handling Degrassi Nudes make me seriously ill.
I have seen many opinions on Jon being irrelevant to the story, people calling him bland, boring, not at all compelling compared to the other POVs, a Mary Sue character, and GRRM trying too hard to make readers relate to him. Like, what? How is Jon a plot armor character? All of them are Dany fans, obviously. I think they seem to ignore that two things can be true: that Dany and Bran are the ones most in tune with their magical sides, and that Jon has the most magical blood (First Men plus Valyrian blood) in the ASOIAF series.
Some are stating him as just a self-insert of GRRM with no real purpose, because GRRM calls Jon the only character close to the classical fantasy hero and has said he wants to be Jon if he had the opportunity to be any character from the series. But he loves Sam. George has said this many times, that he is Samwell in real life. You can like two characters at the same time. Him being a dragonseed does not take away Dany's importance, her right, and claim, which is not even what the story is about. Also there is no singular hero of the story.
She is AA/Tptwp since that's all that matters. It will be really funny when the prophecies turn out to be irrelevant, and given that George is very anti-war, the ln will likely end with a pact. The ending is very bittersweet, so if you think either of the two main POV characters, Dany and Jon, get any happiness, you are dead wrong. I am sure Jon will die at the end of the series since he is already undead. Not sure about Dany's ending. Also, what is with this obsession with him being the villain post resurrection? Yes, him being a bit darker and morally grey is inevitable, but him turning evil just to improve Dany's PR screams insecurity and jealousy. If asked why his arc will do a complete 180 and he will become a villain, they have no proper answer. LSH and BD were not wargs, and Beric was not evil, so their examples do not work. The night's king and Paul Arteries comparison theory are too much of a reach it fits Stannis and even Dany for the PA trope well since Jon do not fall into any category. He is not a chosen one or linked to any prophesy.
It has been eight years since the last season and the Dany vs. Jon discourse is so tiring. The series did irreparable damage to Jon's PR. Making up false scenarios and writing essays about why he is irrelevant to help you sleep at night will not change the story. The books will never be concluded. Even if TWOW comes out, the lore of the ln, the Starks, the Others, and the children of forest is too complicated. You could write an entire series about that. Jon is the only pov that will tell us the story of others and their what their deal is. People also forget that dragons did not exist during the first ln. In the books it is very clearly implied dragons do not like crossing the walls like they are scared and they were grown ass dragons let's see how dragon react to others in the future books if they are ever released if they are helpful at all.
Sorry for the rant u can ignore the ask if u want and no I am not misogynistic or dany hater since that's the go to response of most Dany fans you guys have to understand not having Dany as ur fav character is not the end of the world. If u read this series and assume this series is only made for her and think she is above the series and everything is about her and every other character is irrelevant and are plot armor then I do not know what delusion u are living in. U should read other series and not have a mental breakdown if someone disagrees with ur opinion.
um...this is a lot but maybe this is twt discourse cause i deleted a couple of weeks ago but i think Jon is meant to be a typical fantasy hero for a bit but gets much more complicated later on, i think he's a very easy character for audiences to root for/relate to and gets extra magical/political feats every book at an extreme speed rate so that's why he's seen as a typical gary stue, the show didnt help by stripping away all his complexity and grey moments where we we see a couple of red flags from his behaviour that'll make his character a lot more complicated than "doing the right thing" this doesnt mean he'll be straight up evil just more brutal/selfish/cunning ect you know like the grey characters grrm likes to writeđ his character will be in a tunnel of darkness before he can get back up to that light and yes ive said that he's most likely to die as most undead characters or ppl who defy the natural rules of nature are to experience a final death eventually.
this fandom's obsession with trying to think this huge prophecy is straight up not filled with double meanings is what kills any proper discussions on character motivations. You are meant to question if Azor ahai is actually legit or a good thing ive said multiple times that dany/jon and stannis all are meant as characters to examine what prophecy does to both people and the "prophet saviours" for now stannis is wholeheartedly a person trying to emulate that vision so badly but if anything he's turned into a night's king figure, jon has no idea about any of this stuff but his fate is probably going to emulate SOME stuff from this but not as literally as he's probably going to have a following of freefolk and Nightswatch men once he comes back from death by Mel(someone's whos probs gonna push him to be known as azor ahai), Dany has the most symbolism towards this with Drogon essentially being her lightbringer and her being the leader of the dothraki and many other groups before her invasion into westeros, she's also guided by many religious leaders(future) and her own faith as the blood of the dragon, mother of dragons, the last targaryen, thats like her whole thing in ADWD final chapters.
Dany is very interesting to talk about i just think its difficult to do this when a) george writes a lot of unfortunate things to her that has deal with her being a girl that seems very unrelenting that he doesnt do or cannot do with men which includes sexualization, rape and sexual assault and all the politics that comes with that when analyzing her character vs what he thinks of her when writting b) fandom and media is very misogynistic towards female characters, if george wants to write a female version of achilles/conan/Elric/anakin or byronic tragic female hero thats great but her character has so many things that would be ruled as misogynistic and outdated if she does die like in the show i CANNOT do another wolverine stabbing jean grey type shit in this day and age like pls spare me, ik fans can be overzealous but i don't blame them if such an ending happens with her,it would be a let down not to mention there's a lot of hypocrisy with stannis/jon vs dany.
After reading And Seven Times Never Kill Man! it makes me think George put a lot of his ideas on religious propaganda/fanaticism with prophets/gods and saviours in asoiaf and thats shown with all the different types of prophetic saviours that are seen in the text, its either split in different aspects are most of them come from the same bloody sacrificial source for some big plan (see bloodraven ragnarok theories) and its most likely come TWOW and ADOS a lot more horrible devastation is to come from it , like yes grrm is romantic he also just likes characters being doomed by prophecy or characters fulfilling these in different ways(see the ghost highheart and maggy the frog's prophecies). Like just looking at stuff he's cowritten like Elden ring has a lot of stuff like this characters wanting to be gods or avoiding there faiths sometimes completely fail (ppl were VERY angry about miquella) or end with the worlds being fundamentally changed but in asoiaf its very much "power lies where men believe it does".
I dont believe that grrm is gonna make it that simple of dragons burning the others/avengers endgaming the series like he's said MULTIPLE times he does not like that stuff nor are the others mindless hordes of orcs that heroes will beat with swords and hammers...the wights maybe?considering the immortality death stuff but yea i already believe Bran is most likely to know wtf is up with the others, maybe Jon would have have to deal with way more stuff with humanity like the actual consequences of winter/starvation/cannibalism/lack of the sun/ and the politics of the northern chaos thats bound to happen eventually by ADOS, idk how the dragons would be apart of this considering they cant cross the wall unless the wall crashes at the end of TWOW but i always thought her invasion would start south just like aegon the conqueror did which she's most likely to follow(crownlands to the riverlands ect) maybe in an opposite way even like it really depends where she or the rest actually lands first (there's theories of tyrion burning the vale or killing robin but i don't really know if that would happen) .
in the final lines of And Seven Times Never Kill Man! there's legit a sequence where ppl burn there provisions because they believe there god says they'll be no winter if they sacrifice there children and that there prophet will come so there's no need to worry when that god just feeds on the endless cycle of violence so that shit SCARES me when thinking about the long night and the azor ahai prophecy or the old gods and stuff ,what i hope happens is that the characters can look past that stuff instead of being warrior prophets they can actually look down and find solutions that doesn't feed into cycles of violence for the ppl .
Declan would be more hated if we had to look at him longer. One more season and he would have been in the Peter and Owen club
I already hate him enough as it is

S3 Van Cameron Headcanons
-This season is one of my favorite AUs for Van Cameron considering it's the only one where Liberty canonically had a crush on Sean..o.even though it went terribly. The writers may have not seen their potential but I sure do! -Instead of Liberty hitting on Sean in the most embarrassing way possible and him meanly rejecting her, after they work on their history project together a genuine friendship forms between them. Liberty still crushes on him but she's too scared to be open about it after T -Sean playfully picks on her but he allows NO ONE ELSE to. The one time Jay tried to do so behind his back, Sean threatened to do him worse than he did Tyler and Jay is only nice to Liberty from then on. Sean affectionally calls her "dork" and is always "threatening" to steal her lunch. -Even though she finds his antics annoying, Liberty brings extra food from home so Sean doesn't have to buy lunch. Sean is flustered every time but is very appreciative of her doing this. He starts sitting with her instead of Jay and Alex which confuses them. -Sean becomes obsessed with Liberty's hair and encourages her to wear it down more often. He finds random excuses to touch it without looking suspicious. If it was anyone else, Liberty would feel uncomfortable with them touching her hair, but with Sean she secretly loves it because of her crush on him. -Liberty helps Sean with their schoolwork and he performs better in classes because of it.
-All of their friends are really confused at their friendship, and both Emma and JT are bitter and jealous e. Emma reminds Liberty every chance she gets that Sean was an asshole to her before they broke up and JT keeps warning Sean to stay away from Liberty because she might have a crush on him and there's NO WAY he would want that, right? Right? -Sean is crushing on Liberty back but he's scared to admit his feelings because he thinks he's too good for her. -When Sean is serving one of his Saturday detentions, he's not only surprised to see Jimmy, Hazel, and Ellie, but also Liberty. Liberty is there to do a research paper of the effectiveness of detention for students. Jimmy and Hazel tease her for her but Sean gets protective of Liberty and tells them off. This prompts Jimmy to start accusing Sean and Liberty of being boyfriend and girlfriend, making things awkward for them. -Sean does the same with Jimmy and Hazel, and during a game of Truth or Dare, Jimmy bites back by daring Sean to kiss Liberty. Sean protests the idea out of respect towards Liberty, but she goes along with it just so everyone would finally leave them alone. They kiss⊠and immediately their feelings for each other gets even stronger. Even though they're both still too scared to admit their feelings for each other at first, when they're alone on the rooftop, they eventually do and they decide to officially get together.
-Emma and JT are both angry at their relationship and try to sabotage it even though Emma is in a relationship with Chris. Chris dumps Emma when he gets tired of her nonsense with Sean, Manny refuses to date T because of how obvious it is that he has feelings for Liberty and tells Emma to get a grip. Toby is minding his own business from the sidelines. *. -It takes some time for Liberty to warm up to Jay and Alex, and she mostly only tolerates them because of Sean. Her and Alex eventually become friends though because Alex thinks she has a better personality than Emma -Most of their dates are at the movies, the mall, the library, the ice cream shop, The Dot, the arcade, and the park. Liberty often sneaks over to his apartment and lies to her parents that she's just hanging out with Manny. At his apartment, they watch movies and tv shows with pizza, soda, wings, and plenty of snacks and candy. Sean occasionally cooks dinner for her and bakes her chocolate cake to impress her. Liberty loves his cooking! -Liberty gets him into Lord Of The Rings and Sean gets her into Friday The 13th. -They progressively start rubbing off on each other. Liberty gets more assertive and free spirted. Sean gets more mature and willing to intellectually push himself. -Tracker loves Liberty and thinks she's a great influence on Sean -Sean buys her barrettes, pins, brooches, ribbons, and bows to put in her hair, and he likes snuggling into it. Liberty likes to cuddle with him because of his warmth and muscles «Sean's reasoning for calling her "babygirl" for this era specifically is because of her cute appearance and innocent demeanor
«Liberty starts getting frustrated with him just seeing her as cute, especially when she saw how sexually upfront he was with his last girlfriend Amy, who mocks her about her and Sean's sexual history. This leads to the first big drama in their relationship because Liberty feels insecure while Sean is dodgy about his past. Sean constantly having parties at his apartment after Tracker moves out doesn't help because Liberty sees them as a great impediment to Sean's improvement with his academics. -Sean admits to Liberty that he doesn't want to have sex with her NOT because she's too "cute" for him but moreso because after Amy, he wants a deeper connection with a girl that doesn't revolve around sex. This makes Liberty feel better about their relationship, and they get over this brief rough patch. -Liberty encourages Sean to confess to Simpson about stealing his laptop and even though Simpson is furious at first, things get better for him and Sean at the Bollywood dance and she is happy to see it -Over the summer, Liberty regularly hangs out at his place when she can get away with it and hangs out with him and his friends. She also sneaks him over to her home whenever her parents are at work and introduces him to the magic of hot tubs -Danny likes Sean and considers him the coolest guy until he catches him making out with his sister. Then he threatens to out their relationship to his and Liberty's parents. Sean buys Danny ice cream every week to keep him quiet. They live happily ever afterâŠuntil the shooting happens
Why do they make it seem like Fiona got turned gay by having an abusive boyfriend? Is that how it happens?
This discussion is interesting because people will say that it wasnât a big deal and that itâs revolutionary to show that âanyone can be a victim whether theyâre unlikable or notâ and while thatâs true, it becomes a tired and weird plot device when damn near EVERY female character that was in a villainous role of any kind had SA or domestic abuse happen to them but never the males. Where was Spinnerâs SA or abuse storyline? Jayâs? Johnnyâs? Bruceâs? Owenâs? Dallasâ? Even Sean during his toxic era in S3 could have had oneâŠ.

Season Two Van Cameron Headcanons
Van Cameron S2 headcanons
-During home ec class, Liberty and Sean get assigned to bake a chocolate together. Liberty assumes that she would have to do most of the baking but Sean surprises her by knowing what to do. When Liberty asks him how did he become such a good baker, he gets defensive about it until he begrudgingly reveals that he learned to cook and bake from his circumstances. Itâs also a coping skill for him. He doesnât want anyone else to know because it would threaten his tough guy image but Liberty encourages him to be proud about it as girls love guys who can cook, or at she does. This sparks Sean to have an interest in Liberty and he offers to bake her cookies sometime.
-They progressively become very good friends over time. Sean gets protective of Liberty and is quick to stand up for her. Even though Liberty tries to act like she doesnât need the protection, secretly she appreciates it as heâs the first person in her life who wants to do so (other than Danny). She helps him out with his schoolwork and he performs better in classes than he expects.
-Emma and JT are hating in the background đ, though JT doesnât register at first WHY he doesnât like seeing Liberty and Sean together until Toby calls it what it is: jealousy.
-Sean, at first doesnât want to admit that he has a crush on Liberty, especially when the other guys tease him for it during the events of Drive. But then Craig tells him to embrace it because Liberty is cute in a dorky but endearing way. The three of them become a friendship trio.
-Liberty gets confused and scared of her crush on Sean, because she still has a lingering crush on JT whoâs suddenly become way nicer to her than before. She doesnât know who to choose.
-While Sean feels frustrated with Libertyâs militant attitude as hockey manager like everyone else, when she explains her reasoning that she just wants recognition for the hard work she does for everyone while also still wanting them to succeed, Sean softens up and assures her that she does deserve to be loved and appreciated, she just also needs to relax and not resort to pressure all of the time
-Sean shows her how to play basketball, and he also encourages her to play less intense sports like frisbee and bowling. Liberty surprisingly becomes good at basketball with his efforts and pushes him to never go easy on her. This is one of their favorite activities to do outside of school.
-Tracker likes Liberty and encourages Sean to go for it, even though he teases Sean by reminding him of all the bad things he used to say
-When itâs the end of the year and the Hawaiian dance is tomorrow, Sean is worried about Craigâs mental state due to his fatherâs death but he also wants to ask Liberty out so he does, giving her a bag of homemade chocolate chip cookies he baked himself like he promised. Problem is, JT also asks out Liberty. Sean and JT get into an intense argument over who âdeservesâ to go with Liberty and gets all of their friends involved. Emma, Manny, Toby, and even Paige aggressively push Liberty to choose JT but Liberty decides to seek advice from the older kids, who outside of Paige push her to choose Sean (especially Ashley who still feels bad over what went down between her, Sean, and Jimmy at the beginning of the year) and thatâs who she picks. Even though Sean doesnât care to get in theme for the dance, he still tells her what he would like to see her in. She gives him reassurance that Craig is going to be okay eventually, he just needs time to grieve.
-When they go to the dance, Sean wears a luau for Libertyâs sake and shows her how to dance. They have fun, officially get together, and have their happily ever after!âŠ.
-âŠ..until Sean enters his Slim Shady era in S3 đ„Ž

Season One Van Cameron Headcanons
-I feel like due to Liberty skipping a grade and Sean repeating grade seven, the age gap between the two of them this season would have been really awkward because Liberty would only be 11-12 and Sean 13-14 (logically, the way this show did ages, birth years, and months was extremely messy and inconsistent. The writers kept retconning and changing everything as they went along? đđ), their relationship would have had to have been super chaste. Plus itâs hard to visualize S1-2 without Semma
-I can see a light enemies to lovers dynamic happening between them. They wouldnât get along at first because Liberty wouldnât trust Sean due to his background and Sean would find her annoying and stuck up. But then Sean would see Liberty get bullied by other kids at Degrassi and feel bad enough to stand up for her. This causes them to be nicer to each other and Liberty develops a crush on Sean. She gets very bashful whenever she has to interview him for the grapevine.
-Toby, for obvious reasons, is Team Van Cameron but he pretends to be Team Jiberty for JTâs sake. Manny, out of loyalty to Emma, is Team Semma.
-Tracker pushes Sean to go for Liberty only because he lowkey still resents Emma after the little Parentâs Day incident and think Liberty sounds better đ. Sean lets Emma down gently and sheâs a bit salty but she gets over it. I think in this timeline either Emma gives Toby a chance or Spemma happens earlier.
-When he gets a cut on the basketball court during a game and she patches up his wound, he confesses his feelings for her and asks her out. Liberty decides right then and there who she really wants. They start going out đ„°
-Thereâs no way in hell Libertyâs parents would be okay with her dating this early, and especially not with some kid who had to repeat a grade because he got kicked out of his last school for deafening another kid in his ear. They only spend time with each other at school and after school related events so her parents donât find out.
-Theyâre very sweet and wholesome with each other. Sean gives Liberty his jean jacket to wear whenever she feels chilly. Liberty brings extra food from home so he could have lunch.
-Because at this stage in their relationship, Sean is still taller than Liberty, he gives her piggyback rides and she likes burying her face into his neck whenever they hug. -Liberty gets his jersey number embedded on one of her jackets to show support for him during a basketball game
-When the Armstrong incident happens, Sean is ready to beat up Mr. Armstrong the fuck up. Theyâre both very mad at Emma when she comes clean about the rumor starting with her, and Liberty accuses her of only starting the rumor because sheâs jealous of her and Sean.
Liberty is nervous that Sean would think less of her for having dyscalculia when sheâs so smart in other areas but even though he doesnât understand the disorder much and he mispronounces it on a regular basis, heâs still supportive of her and assures her that he could never think less of her.
-The inevitable of them having relationship problems at the end of the year happens. Because she wants the best for Sean, Liberty starts getting really pushy and demanding about him studying for their final exams, which causes him to get stressed and lash out at her. Then his beef with Jimmy boils up. Because Liberty admires Ashley so much, she tries to work with Ashley to get their boyfriends to stop beefing. This doesnât work and the fight happens. Liberty doesnât jump in like Emma did but sheâs still very angry at Sean and accuses him of being no better than a thug. They have a huge argument over this. Sean, out of insecurity, cheats off of her during final exams. Liberty is willing to make up with him until he confesses to what he did. She angrily dumps him đ„¶ The events of Jagged Little Pill still happens with them. Sean makes out with Ashley, Liberty is upset, JT uses Seanâs fuck up as an opportunity to make moves on Liberty. She embraces him at the end of the night like how Emma did with Toby right in front of Seanâs face whoâs heartbroken đ„¶đ„¶đ„¶
-The break up thankfully doesnât last too long! At the beginning of the new school year, when she hears that Sean is trying to date Ashley, Liberty gets jealous and demands to know why. Sean tells her to mind her business since she dumped him. Liberty tells Jimmy out of spite, which causes everything to implode. After getting rejected by Ashley, Sean confronts Liberty and she admits that she wants him back. Even though he rolls his eyes and calls her a dork for her behavior, Sean admits that heâs not over her either and they get back together đ„°

Sean vs Toby in an Eybrow-Off
Sean is winning the eyebrow off against anyone letâs be real
Damian could give Craig, Jay and Drew a run for their money of being Degrassi's biggest manwhore.
I really hate that the show had Damien curve Liberty at first but then desire her after he dated both of her alleged nonblack best friends. It was weird that the show pushed that Liberty was undesirable compared to her nonblack peers and always the one at the bottom when all of the other romantic options were gone.

It seems that Jiberty is too complex a ship for many of the fandom to see and thatâs the shows fault for not showing that on the screen. It truly is a ship for those who can read between the lines and donât need everything spelled out directly.
Iâm saying this as someone who still ships them to an extent but very dissatisfied with how they were written on the show for the most part: nearly their entire relationship was built on harmful ideals and expectations of black women and girls and itâs annoying how I feel as a black female fan, no one is allowed to critique their relationship in this regard without people getting overly defensive for JTâs sake. 90% of the time when people in this fandom express dislike for Jiberty, itâs because of hate towards Liberty. âShe was awful to JT while pregnantâ âShe was awful to JT during the Mia situationâ âshe was a creep to JTâ âJT was more compatible with Paige/Manny/Mia than Libertyâ âLiberty abused JT and never loved himâ but when JT gets even the slightest criticism itâs âJT was a childâ âThey both have faultsâ. Like a ship where the black female half regularly got degraded by the narrative and gets bashed constantly by the fandom while the white male half isnât allowed to get hate at all for his faults because he had a tragic death isnât a good ship. I appreciate Ryan and Sarah for doing the best they could with what the script gave them though.
