The Coolest Lava
There is no mistake. While most lavas in the world will be red hot in colour, rich in silicate minerals there is one particular volcano in the world... which leaks it black! We are talking about the Mountain of God as local Maasai people call it – ‘Ol Doinyo Lengai’, a stratovolcano in the north of Tanzania, part of the Great Rift Valley in Africa. The reason why most hot lava is released red is because it contains silicates which burn red and orange. The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is natrocarbonatite, rich in sodium and carbonates and is characterised by the low viscosity (it is very liquid) while it erupts at a very low temperature of 500-590 degrees celsius. We are dealing with the coldest lava in the world as most lavas are released at temperature above 1000 °C.
