Black Box is a psychological horror comic that delves into the grim reality of punitive psychiatry—a system where medical institutions serve as tools of control rather than care. While the story unfolds in a post-Soviet setting (the chaotic 1990s, an era of crime and shattered lives), its themes will resonate globally. American readers might recall the abuse of institutional power in mid-20th-century asylums or unethical experiments like MKUltra. Meanwhile, those familiar with Japanese cults, you also may draw parallels to the aftermath of Aum Shinrikyo, where fears of brainwashing led to harsh stigmatization of former and current members of other cults.
The comic follows Roman, a devout Orthodox Christian, who finds himself trapped in a psychiatric hospital after a ritual gone wrong. His seemingly kind psychiatrist, Georgiy, assures him that discharge is imminent — pending bureaucratic formalities. But as days stretch into weeks, the line between treatment and manipulation blurs.
The post-Soviet context should feel familiar enough through the lens of pop culture tropes you’ve likely encountered. I’ve aimed for the most accurate translation possible, with help from my friend Yuta, who is also not fluent, but pretty good in English. No need to overexplain — just dive in. Enjoy the read.
