Got my first two stripes tonight in class!!! Â Our instructor is only a brown belt, so our brother school's black belt comes and gives us stripes based on what Sensei says for the most part.
Was super happy to get the first stripe, since it's been six months since I've started. Â However, as the black belt was giving my my stripe, he said, "Get me another one of these." Â So I apparently I caught his eye, whether from his competition back in April or tonight. Â And now I have two stripes.
If I don't sleep tonight, it's from being too happy.
I'm so beat right now. My muscles are exhausted after my second class this week and whatnot. Â Welcome back to working out!Â
So I was on vacation for 10 days after finals, and after being sick. Â So it pretty much was a month of training very little. Â And coming back was hard. Tuesday am was like swimming through molasses, just so slow and painful. Wednesday I actually made progress in krav! Â Did 16 push-ups, chin to floor! So very proud of myself.
Bjj is amazing as usual, of course. Â I actually got asked to demonstrate twice in class in krav and bjj on Wednesday night. Â It's pretty much a huge honor since to be picked, they have to notice you. :) Â And you have to be doing things right.Â
Not a shabby way to get back into things. Â Now I just need to learn how to run again. Â And maybe find a squat rack...

Hahahahahahah best thing ever!
yeah right. Like I’m going to go past this and NOT reblog it? please…hahaha
If you’re not doing it like this, you’re not doing it right.Â
bjj >>> finals.
not gonna lie, bjj with a sore throat is miserable. Â but went to the morning class today, where there were 6 of us. Â my normal instructor when to a seminar this morning, so one of our blue belts taught the class. Â i really enjoy learning from different people, because everyone's style is different.
we worked some gi chokes, but then with the heat and Carlos's love for no gi, we stripped and did some no gi triangle and arm bar set ups. Â arm bars confuse me to hell for some reason. Â maybe it's because i've hardly ever done them...Â
but then we got to roll with everyone. Â and not gonna lie, it's becoming way better to roll with people. Â even my boyfriend, who's 1.5x my body weight. Â we both have more skill now so he uses less strength, allowing me more freedom to do things. Â but we both agree that we like gi better, as i've rolled no gi maybe twice before today.
lots of tea and water for the rest of the day, plus any medication that maybe can stop my sinuses from draining down my throat. gross.
last finals week for undergrad. stressed up the wall. good thing I have more time for bjj this week.
tomorrow might be the last time I ever put on tap shoes :( Mixture of good feelings that I have something awesome to move onto, but sad because I'm finishing after 19 years of dancing. Â and just completely ending.Â
sigh

So last night at krav was the beginning of stripe testing. Â And it was also the first night I tried going almost full out on my elbow. Â It's a tiny bit sore today, but nothing I can't handle. Â Though for keeping it easy in for the past few weeks, I was able to do 12 push-ups (max of 14 for a month ago), 23 v's (max of 18), 57 squats (and beat my boyfriend), and I completely forget my jump kicks, though I did do at least 30 on each leg. Â Not too shabby but those numbers don't count. Â Tomorrow night's do, so I really hope I can keep it up.
Not only that, but bjj was awesome. Â We have a Marco DeLima seminar tomorrow (YESSS) so there wasn't a set plan for this week in class. Â Instead, he had our top three belts in class start a sequence of moves, including omoplata initiated in side mount, escaping the omoplata, and then choking from a north south position. Â I got to try a whole bunch of different moves as I worked with a brown belt and he likes to show me different tricks he's picked up. Â
After class I got to roll with the other brown belt there, and it's really fascinating to me the different styles people develop. Â The brown belt I work with usually is called 'Dirty' for a reason, where as the other brown belt rolls more for fun and to keep things constantly flowing. Â Though I really appreciate that they stop me periodically to show me things. Â I really can't wait to get up to the colored belts so that rolling becomes more fluid and natural the way it is for these guys. Â
I also wish there were more girls in the class. Â I don't care about the gender too much, but more on the size. Â There are two girls who come usually to my class, and I know what they can and cannot do to a point where it's almost not fun anymore. Â One puts me in side mount and stays there. Â I can't escape hers as easily as anyone else in the world. Â The other reason is that I really believe bjj is great for females in a self defense perspective. Maybe I'm biased because I see this in engineering as well, but I'd like to see more equality gender-wise. Â Just as a side thought.
Never can wait til the next class.
last week's bbj classes feel like forever ago. can't wait for tonight!

Yesterday night, we had one of the blue belts teach class, so we started with some very different warm-ups. Â Instead of shrimping, we tried to get certain grips from standing, which was awesome. Â One of the guys I worked with was a ninja. Â I don't even know how he got them. every. time. Just so much awe that he could do that.Â
Then we practiced more butterfly sweeps like we did on Monday, so good review. Â And then spent the last 15 minutes of class just rolling. Â And rolled after. Â Elbow didn't even hurt at all, which is EXCELLENT. Â I'm super happy.
And then rolled a bunch after. Â I learn more offensive things with the guys I roll with then in class. Â The one thing I'm finding is that I'm very comfortable on my back at this point, which isn't the best thing ever. Lots of things to work on...
Please god let me never get injured again so I can roll forever. :)
Only two weeks of no rolling and I was dying. My elbow is still sore when holding pads for striking in krav, but during bjj it was an absolute angel. And I got to roll with my favorite brown belt, who showed me some little tricks and really pointed out things I need to work on, like my breathing.
Throughout my life, I keep having people remind me to breathe when exercising. I don't even notice the stopping or catching my breath, but it happens. And now it can be a weakness in competition. So every time I started breathing heavy, he'd stop our rolling and make me take incremental breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth until my heart rate relaxed. I'm glad people keep pointing this out to me, cause I've never noticed it on my own until I'm gasping for air.
Taking up jiu jitsu is already one of the best decisions I've ever made in my entire life. <3
